Cypermethrin residues were extracted on day seven and 14.</p><p>Cyclohexane and deionized water was utilized in multiple step extraction processes. Samples were analyzed in a Gas Chromatograph (GC) with electron capture detector (ECD). </p><p>Concentration values for the samples were highest for beech-forest soil and lower for the other two soil-types. Statistical differences in concentrations between control- and test-microcosms for each soil-type on day seven and day 14 were evaluated with Mann Whitney U tests. Significant result was only found in the industrial 14-day group. The small amounts of cypermethrin in the extracts could not only be ascribed to a bacterial degradation process. Used insecticide has a high bonding affinity for particles and is sequestered in soil.</p>

Growth and yield implications of site preparation, competition control, and climate in the western boreal forest

The main goal of this thesis was to improve our understanding of the long-term effects of establishment treatments and climate change on lodgepole pine and white spruce growth in the western boreal forests. My dissertation also investigated the combined effects of climate and competition on white spruce and trembling aspen growth in boreal mixtures. In the first part of the thesis I evaluated the effects of site preparation treatments on growth of lodgepole pine and white spruce in north-eastern British Columbia. Results indicate that mechanical site preparation can provide yield gains of up-to 10 percent for pine and spruce at 60 and 80 years, respectively. These stands are showing a Type 1 growth response which implies that the treatment effect will eventually cease 90-100 years after planting. In the second part of the thesis I explored pine and spruce growth in relation to past climate and site preparation. Results indicate that up-to 45% and 37% of the respective variation in spruce and pine growth can be explained by selected climatic variables. Future projections indicated that height growth of young pine plantations in the sub-boreal zone could benefit (in the short term) from longer growing seasons by up-to 12% on untreated stands. Untreated young spruce plantations in the boreal zone may suffer height growth decreases of up-to 10% due to increased drought-stress. Vegetation control and mechanical site preparation treatments appear to mitigate effects of climate change to some extent. In the third part of the thesis I explored the combined effects of climate and trembling aspen competition on spruce and aspen growth using data from a long-term study in the boreal zone. Results indicate that climate variables and initial size of the tree can account for significant portions of the annual growth of spruce. Including an estimate of aspen competition in the equations improved the predictive ability of these models. Evidence of the inter-annual variability in aspen competitiveness on spruce and aspen growth indicates that the stress-gradient hypothesis can be applied in boreal mixedwood forests. / Forest Biology and Management

De-icing salt and the roadside environment : Air-borne exposure, damage to Norway spruce and system monitoring

After decades of investigation, we still have to deal withthe problem of environmental effects of the use of de-icingsalt on roads. Lacking useful indicators of the system, westill do not know the environmental utility of ameliorativemeasures taken. The thesis aims at i) describing the system of de-icing practices and theirenvironmental effects with special reference to the exposure ofthe roadside environment to air-borne salt and damage to Norwayspruce seedlings and ii) at proposing indicators for afollow-up system. By collecting bulk deposition and relatingthe deposition pattern to factors concerning wind androad-maintenance characteristics, the influence of thesefactors on air-borne exposure is investigated. By exposingNorway spruce (Picea abies(L.) Karst.) seedlings to roadsideconditions the influence ofsalt exposure on the degree ofdamage is investigated. Based on a comparison of severalsystems of monitoring, improvements are suggested by proposingnew indicators for salt use and its environmental effects. A large part of the salt that is applied on the road surfacewill be transported by air and deposited on the ground in theroadside. While the vast majority of the salt will be depositedwithin some tens of metres of the road, some may still be windtransported several hundred metres away. The wind directionplays an important role for the deposition already at adistance of some ten metres from the road. Wind speedinfluences the distance to which the salt is transported.Chloride concentration in unwashed needles collected after thesalting season is positively related to the bulk deposition ofCl during the exposure. The degree of damage can be describedby a sigmoid curve of response to the Cl concentration inneedles. Forest Recovery, Nutrient Cycling and Carbon Sequestration in a Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forest

In order to fully understand the magnitude of the benefits that forests provide, it is crucial to understand the full suite of ecosystem services that they offer. A southern Appalachian red spruce-Fraser fir forest was intensively analyzed using a variety of methodologies to determine the nature and quantity of some of these services. Many hypotheses exist regarding the future of these spruce-fir forests, which were heavily disturbed by the non-native balsam wooly adelgid during the 1980s. Direct measurements over the course of a decade assessed these hypotheses and indicate that this forest is recovering structure and function. The forest is accruing overstory biomass, with vegetation composition on a trajectory towards historic conditions. By using a total forest inventory of all vegetation from overstory trees to understory mosses, rates of productivity and nutrient cycling were determined. Productivity of this forest at low elevations has returned to pre-adelgid levels, while at high elevations productivity is approaching these levels. In the absence of an intact overstory, forest understory vegetation can compensate by disproportionately cycling and retaining nutrients such as nitrogen that would otherwise leach offsite. The understory of this forest provides an important service in nutrient cycling. Our ability to actively manage forests in order to manipulate levels and rates of carbon sequestration was assessed using stand data and the Forest Vegetation Simulator Growth and Yield Model. Silvicultural intervention proved effective at sequestering additional carbon over a no action alternative by the end of our simulation period. This forest provides a variety of ecosystem services and has retained its ability to recover their function after catastrophic disturbance.

Effects of microsite alteration on soil climate, nitrogen mineralization, and establishment of Picea Glauca x Engelmannii seedlings in the sub-boreal spruce zone of west-central British Columbia

Site preparation treatments are often used prior to the planting of clearcut forest lands to improve planter access and to increase the number and quality of planting spots. Most mechanical site preparation treatments alter the configuration and material composition of surface soil materials, and can have marked effects on soil properties important to seedling survival and growth. Effects of some of these treatments on soil moisture, soil temperature, rates of nitrogen mineralization, and the establishment of Picea glauca x engelmannii seedlings were examined on fresh, moist, and wet sites in the moist cold subzone of the Sub-boreal Spruce Zone in west-central British Columbia. Four types of microsite alteration were investigated: forest floor removal (spot scalping), soil mounds over inverted sections of forest floor (inverted mounds), mineral soil mounds over a mineral soil surface, and inversion of the forest floor and mineral soil in place. Soil temperature was monitored continuously and soil moisture weekly at the 10-cm depth in 16 combinations of site and microsite treatment during two growing seasons. The response of seedling height and diameter growth was monitored for three growing seasons. Effects of altering soil temperatures through mechanical treatments on rates of nitrogen mineralization were examined by incubating a standard soil material in a range of microsites created by six combinations of site and mechanical treatment. Effects of substrate quality and soil temperature on rates of nitrogen mineralization were examined in paired mounded and untreated spots in fresh, moist, and wet sites. In all sites, early growing season soil temperatures in the seedling rooting zone were substantially warmer in inverted mounds than in other treatments. Spot scalping increased temperatures slightly relative to controls in the fresh site, but had little or no warming effect on moist and wet sites. Inverted mounds became substantially drier than other treatments during periods of low rainfall, particularly in the fresh site. After three growing seasons, seedling height growth was greatest in inverted mounds, irrespective of site. Amounts of nitrogen mineralized in a standard soil material during incubation for 77 days in the field were significantly greater for samples placed in inverted mounds than for those placed in other microsite treatments. There was a significant positive correlation between amounts of nitrogen mineralized during field incubations and degree hour sums calculated for associated microsite treatments and sites. Both substrate quality and soil thermal regime affected rates of N mineralization in samples from paired mounded and untreated spots, and an interaction was observed between the two factors. / Graduation date: 1991

Age effects on seed productivity in northern black spruce forests (<i>Picea mariana</i>)

Climate change is predicted to increase rates of fire activity in boreal forests. A shortened fire return interval may result in different outcomes of community structure in the northern boreal forest, since the age of a forest influences seed production and potential post-fire regeneration. With two closely timed fires, dominant boreal conifers such as black spruce (Picea mariana) may be vulnerable to regeneration failures after fire because of the long time required to reach reproductive maturity. I report on the relationship between stand age and seed productivity of black spruce in northern Yukon Territory and central Alaska. I used fire history maps to select sites of various stand ages, including stand ages that would occur in a short fire return interval (less than 80 years) versus longer fire intervals (up to 200 years). At each site, I measured stand density and basal area using the point-center-quarter method. Ten black spruce trees were randomly selected for cone surveys and age analysis. I also selected a subset of five trees for detailed analyses of cone and seed production within yearly cohorts. The results of this study illustrate the strong relationships between stand age and stand basal area with cone and seed production of northern black spruce. The resulting equations can be used to predict the seed capacity and regeneration potential of black spruce stands with known stand basal area or stand age. I estimate, along with the number of seeds required to produce a two year old black spruce seedling on high quality seedbeds, stands burned at an age less than 50 years will likely have reduced black spruce post-fire density. On low quality seedbeds, black spruce forests are more vulnerable to regeneration failures and fire cycles less than 150 years are likely to result in reduced recruitment. Under a shortened fire return interval these northern black spruce forests are likely to have reduced post-fire density.

Transient moisture characteristics of spruce plywood

In this thesis, the moisture characteristics of spruce plywood are studied experimentally and numerically with special attention given to moisture storage and release as the indoor humidity changes diurnally. This is referred to as the moisture buffering capacity. Two test facilities (a glass jar facility and a transient moisture transfer facility) are used to measure the moisture accumulation and temperature and relative humidity profiles within spruce plywood. These measured data are used to determine the moisture buffering capacity of spruce plywood and validate a one-dimensional transient numerical model that can be used to calculate the transient heat and moisture transfer in spruce plywood. There is good agreement between the measured and simulated results over the range of test variables investigated. </p><p>This validated numerical model is used to investigate the effect of initial conditions, boundary conditions, thickness and humidity step change on the moisture buffering capacity. In addition, sensitivity studies are performed to investigate the effect of variations in material properties used in the numerical model. The properties that are considered in these sensitivity studies are the sorption isotherm, effective thermal conductivity, heat of sorption and effective diffusion coefficient. These studies show that the sorption isotherm has the greatest effect on the moisture buffering capacity, as well as the temperature and relative humidity profiles within spruce plywood. For example, a ± 10% change in sorption isotherm has a ± 7%, ± 6% and ± 10% effect on the moisture buffering capacity, and the relative temperature and relative humidity change, respectively. </p><p>This thesis also verifies the moisture diffusivity property for spruce plywood, which was developed by Olutimayin and Simonson (2005) to account for moisture storage in cellulose insulation for a single step change in humidity. It was found that for spruce plywood, the moisture penetration depth may be over predicted by an order of magnitude when moisture storage is neglected using a transient analytic solution which does not include moisture storage.
