No. of bitstreams: 1 MARIA CRISTINA RABELLO SANTEDICOLA.pdf: 4296509 bytes, checksum: 9b75ea6791f10f2712fb327350e1e991 (MD5) / O objetivo deste estudo foi validar as razões Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca e Ba/Ca encontradas no esqueleto do coral Mussismilia braziliensis Verrill 1868 como indicadores geoquímicos (proxy) da temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM), utilizando 310 amostras de dois testemunhos denominados CAB2 e CLE, coletados respectivamente nas estações CLE (Pedra de Leste; latitude 17°47´173”S, longitude 39°02´935” W; 12km costa afora) e CAB (Parcel de Abrolhos; latitude 17°57´528”S, longitude 38°39´342”W; 80 km costa afora), onde a variação anual da TSM é de cerca de 4°C e a taxa de extensão linear desta espécie de coral é 0,89cm/ano. Após um estudo piloto realizado com 17 amostras para adaptar a metodologia, identificar a melhor vidraria, instrumentos de corte e peso seco, 144 amostras do esqueleto coralino foram cortadas a cada 2mm ao longo do eixo de crescimento de 4 testemunhos perfurados em 2003. As amostras foram moídas e a matéria orgânica foi eliminada com H2O2. Dez miligramas de cada amostra foram decompostas, adicionando-se gradualmente 10 mL de HNO3 0,5M, e analisadas com ICP-OES. As amplitudes obtidas foram 4553-8194 ppm para Sr, 203-2260 ppm para Mg e 0-17 ppm para Ba. Razões geoquímicas normalizadas foram comparadas com médias normalizadas da TSM obtidas desde 1985, em horário noturno, pelo satélite AVHRR Pathfinder Versão 5.0 NOAA, em intervalos anuais e semestrais. As razões geoquímicas analisadas neste estudo se referem a 144 amostras compatíveis com o período de registro de dados da TSM por este satélite. Uma redução progressiva da razão Sr/Ca desde aproximadamente 1948 encontrada no testemunho CAB-2 poderia ser traduzida como aumento da TSM. Além de comparar series contemporâneas de dados geoquímicos e da TSM, aplicou-se uma defasagem (lag) no pareamento dos dados anuais e semestrais, a fim de investigar possíveis efeitos tardios da TSM sobre a maior disponibilidade destes elementos durante a esqueletogênese coralina. Os achados deste estudo sugerem que as razões Mg/Ca podem ser utilizadas como indicadores da TSM em exemplares coletados distantes da costa, ao passo que as razões Ba/Ca e Sr/Ca podem ser utilizadas como indicadores da TSM em exemplares coletados em locais próximos à costa. A aplicação da defasagem sugere aproximadamente quatro a seis meses como o tempo ótimo para o efeito tardio da TSM acima mencionado.

Assessing the Reproducibility of Coral-based Climate Records: A Multi-proxy Replication Test using Three <em>Porites lutea</em> Coral Heads from New Caledonia

Coral-based climate studies commonly use elemental ratios and stable isotopes of coral skeletons to address seawater temperature and hydrologic balance issues in the tropical surface oceans. Replication, or cross-checking, a standard technique used to assess the fidelity of proxy records in paleoclimatology has not been widely applied in coral-based climate studies, primarily because of the time and cost associated with generating multiple records from a single reef site. Modern and paleoclimate reconstructions based on a single proxy-coral record from a site may contain errors if individual corals from the same reef record different geochemical signals. In this study we perform a replication test using elemental ratios and stable isotopes in three Porites corals from New Caledonia. The reef complex offshore Amédée Island, New Caledonia is an ideal site to perform a coral replication test because instrumental sea surface temperatures (SST) and sea surface salinity measurements (SSS) have been made there for over 25 years. In this study, we compare sub-monthly resolved, geochemical variations (Sr/Ca, δ18O and δ13C) in three Porites lutea coral heads, located ~500 m apart, with the instrumental SST and SSS records over the interval 1992-1967. The monthly coral Sr/Ca and δ18O time series are well correlated to each other (r=0.86, p<.0001) and to the monthly instrumental SST record (r= -0.86, p<.0001, coral Sr/Ca to SST; r= -0.77, p<.0001, coral δ18O to SST). The three, sub-monthly resolved, 30-year coral Sr/Ca-SST time series have mean SST values that agree within 0.2o C with the instrumental mean SST value. A similar comparison for the coral δ18O-SST records indicate a maximum difference between predicted and observed mean SST of 0.5˚C. Analysis of the monthly climatological means also indicates that Sr/Ca-SST records closely match the instrumental SST record ±0.4˚C; a similar comparison using the δ18O-SST record yields an average offset of ±0.6˚C between observed and predicted monthly SST. Stacking the three records to form composite Sr/Ca-SST and δ18O-SST records does not appreciably improve the goodness of fit between the proxy and instrumental SST records; hence a coral-based proxy climate record from a single coral accurately reflects the observed record of climate variability at this locality. These results support the concept that high fidelity climate records can be generated using a single coral core.

This bachelor’s essay aims to discuss breastfeeding and complications related to breastfeeding within archaeological contexts. Why complications have arisen when such a natural act is per- formed and how individuals have tried to manage them. By looking at different methods of recording breastfeeding patterns I aim to broaden the interpretations of breastfeeding in differ- ent time periods and locations. Isotope analysis will be an important part as well as paleopatho- logical analysis of human remains. Information from three completed studies from Öland and Västerhus in Sweden and Quarto Cappello del Prete in Rome will be presented and discussed. In conclusion I suggest that breastfeeding is a complex act surrounded by difficulties such as diseases and cultural norms. There is variation within populations regarding breastfeeding and weaning. People have been struggling as well as fighting for the survival of their children.

no / Small-scale heterogeneity of biogenic carbonate elemental composition can be a significant source of error in the accurate use of element/Ca ratios as geochemical proxies. In this study ion microprobe (SIMS) profiles showed significant small-scale variability of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios in new shell calcite of the marine bivalves Pecten maximus and Mytilus edulis that was precipitated during a constant-temperature culturing experiment. Elevated Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios were found to be associated with the deposition of elaborate shell features, i.e. a shell surface stria in P. maximus and surface shell disturbance marks in both species, the latter a common occurrence in bivalve shells. In both species the observed small-scale elemental heterogeneity most likely was not controlled by variable transport of ions to the extra-pallial fluid, but by factors such as the influence of shell organic content and/or crystal size and orientation, the latter reflecting conditions at the shell crystalsolution interface. In the mid and innermost regions of the P. maximus shell the lack of significant small-scale variation of Mg/Ca ratios, which is consistent with growth at constant temperature, suggest a potential application as a palaeotemperature proxy. Cross-growth band element/Ca ratio profiles in the interior of bivalve shells may provide more promising palaeo-environmental tools than sampling from the outer region of bivalve shells.

L’océan Pacifique est le siège de variabilités climatiques interannuel et multi-décennale, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) et la Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), dont les répercussions (via des téléconnections) peuvent être mondiales. Des impacts importants sur les populations, les activités socio-économiques et sur l’environnement ont été attribuées à ENSO. Il est alors primordial d’améliorer notre compréhension de la dynamique Pacifique et notamment du phénomène ENSO ainsique son évolution sous l’effet du changement climatique.Les mesures géochimiques (Sr/Ca et 818O) réalisées sur les coraux constituent des enregistrements paléoclimatiques de choix pour l’étude de l’évolution d’ENSO et sont essentielles pour mettre en perspective la dynamique actuelle du climat par rapport à sa dynamique passée. Après avoir évaluer la robustesse du paléothermomètre géochimique corallien (Sr/Ca), cette thèse a permis la reconstruction de température de surface océanique (SST) à partir de coraux de l’atoll de Clipperton (Pacifique tropical Est) et de l’archipel des Marquises (Pacifique tropical centre) couvrantplusieurs parties du dernier millénaire. Nos résultats suggèrent que la structure spatiale d’ENSO étaitplutôt stable au cours des deux derniers siècles, montrant majoritairement une structure de type ENSOcanonique (Est Pacifique) par opposition à l’ENSO Modoki (centre Pacifique). Bien qu’encore débattue, cette structure spatiale pourrait avoir évoluée très récemment, en liaison avec le changement climatique global (et cela pourrait continuer dans le futur). A l’échelle décennale, nos deux zones d’étude (centre et Est Pacifique) sont influencées par la PDO.Les résultats de cette thèse tendent également à suggérer que l’activité d’ENSO actuelle (sous l’effet du forçage anthropique) n’est pas atypique à l’échelle du dernier millénaire. En effet, son intensité et sa fréquence étaient plus fortes au début du petit âge glaciaire (LIA, 16ème siècle). La comparaison deces résultats avec un ensemble de simulations climatiques (PMIP3) montre que la variabilité ENSO estbien reproduite par ces modèles climatiques mais qu’ils échouent à reproduire correctement l’état moyen des températures du Pacifique. / The Pacific Ocean is the place of interannual and multi-decadal climate variabilities, namely the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). There can have globals impacts via teleconnections. Major impacts on populations, economic and environmental activitieshave been attributed to ENSO. It is therefore essential to improve our understanding of the Pacificdynamic, particularly ENSO activity and its evolution under recent climate change.Geochemical measurements (Sr/Ca and 818O) performed on corals are relevant paleoclimatic records for studying the evolution of ENSO and are essential to put into perspective the current climatedynamic in comparison to past climate.After an evaluation of the robustness of the coral geochemical paleothermometer (Sr/Ca), we present the reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) from Eastern tropical Pacific coral (Clippertonatoll) and central tropical Pacific coral (Marquesas archipelago) covering several parts of the last millennium. Our results suggest that ENSO spatial pattern was relatively stable over the past two centuries, mainly indicating an eastern Pacific ENSO pattern (canonical) in comparison to the centralPacific ENSO (Modoki). Although still debated, this spatial pattern could have recently changed dueto global climate change (and this could continue in the future). At the decadal timescale, both studiedareas (central and eastern Pacific) are influenced by the PDO.The results of this Phd thesis also suggest that the present day ENSO activity (under the influence ofanthropogenic forcing) is not atypical throughout the last millennium. The intensity and frequency of ENSO were stronger in the early Little Ice Age (LIA, 16th century). These results are compared withan ensemble of climate simulations (PMIP3) and indicate that ENSO variability is correctly reproduced by numerical climate models but that these models fail to correctly reproduce the mean temperature state of the Pacific.

Investigations into the Synthesis, Structural, Dielectric, Piezoelectric and Ferroelectric Properties of Lead-Free Aurivillius Family of Oxides

Bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics have received significant attention recently due to their fairly high TC and good fatigue endurance which make them important candidates for non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories (Fe-RAMs) as well as for the piezoelectric device applications at high temperatures. Structure of these compounds is generally described as the pseudo-perovskite block (An-1BnO3n+1)2- sandwiched between the bismuth oxide layers (Bi2O2)2+ along the c-axis, where n represents the number of corner sharing BO6 octahedra forming the perovskite-like slabs. Only a few compounds belonging to this family show relaxor behavior (frequency dependent diffuse phase transition). Relaxor ferroelectrics are very attractive for a variety of applications, such as capacitors, sensors, actuators, and integrated electromechanical systems. The present work attempts to understand the mechanism of relaxor behavior in Aurivillius oxides as well as to improve the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of some of the known phases. Details pertaining to the fabrication and characterization of BaBi4Ti4O15 (n = 4 member of Aurivillius family of oxides) ceramics are presented. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were employed to probe the structural and microstructural details. The contribution of irreversible domain wall movement to the room temperature dielectric constant and polarization was quantitatively evaluated using the nonlinear dielectric response. Dielectric dispersion and conduction mechanism of these ceramics are also explicated using the complex impedance spectroscopy. The effects of La3+ and Ca2+ doping on the phase transition behavior and other properties of BaBi4Ti4O15 are investigated. La3+ doping for Bi3+ was found to strengthen the relaxor behavior. New compounds such as CaNaBi2Nb3O12, SrNaBi2Nb3O12, Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O12, etc. belonging to the Aurivillius family of oxides have been synthesized and investigations concerning their structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties are presented. Rietveld refinement of room temperature X-ray powder data suggested that CaNaBi2Nb3O12 and SrNaBi2Nb3O12crystallize in the orthorhombic space group B2cb. SrNaBi2Nb3O12 ceramics exhibited frequency-dependent Tm which follows the Vogel-Fulcher relation implying a relaxor nature. No frequency dependence of Tm was observed for CaNaBi2Nb3O12 ceramics. Polarization - electric field hysteresis loops recorded well above Tm confirmed the coexistence of polar and non-polar domains in SrNaBi2Nb3O12 ceramics. Dielectric anomaly observed around 675 K for CNBN corresponds to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition which is accompanied by the change in crystal structure from orthorhombic to tetragonal. Fe and Nb co-doped Bi4Ti3O12 ceramics were fabricated and characterized for their structural, electrical and magnetic properties.
