Properties of the first galaxiesMcLeod, Derek Johannes January 2017 (has links)
With the Hubble Space Telescope and its near-infrared capabilities, it is now possible to probe deep into the epoch of reionization, improving our understanding of galaxy evolution through cosmic history. Whether it is via colour-selection or fitting the spectral energy distribution, it has now become routine to amass large samples of galaxies as distant as redshift z = 8, with the current frontier of observations at z = 9 - 10. The new Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) programme provides the potential to study the most distant, intrinsically faint background galaxies through the gravitational lensing provided by a foreground galaxy cluster. This thesis presents a study of the galaxy population at z = 9 - 10 that exploits this phenomenon. In an initial search of the first two HFF cluster+parallel pointings, Abell 2744 and MACS J0416.1-240, we unveil twelve candidate high-redshift galaxies at 8:4 < z < 9:5, and are thus able to place constraints on the galaxy UV luminosity function at z = 9. For this study, we employ the "blank-field" method, whereby we confine attention to only the homogeneously deep, relatively low-magnification regions of the imaging. We are able to demonstrate evidence for a smooth decline in UV luminosity density between z ≃ 8 and z ≃ 9, in contrast to reports in the recent literature of a steep drop-off at these redshifts. We extend this study to include the new MACS J0717.5+3745 and MACS J1149+2223 cluster+parallel pointings, and supplement the search for z ≃ 9-10 galaxies with twenty CLASH cluster pointings. From a search over an area ≃ 130 sq. arcmin, we are able to present 33 galaxy candidates with photometric redshift solutions in the range 8:4 < zphot < 11:2. Our new results reinforce the argument for a smoothly-evolving LF between z ≃ 8 and z ≃ 9, which can be equally well modelled by a factor ≃ 2 drop in Φ* or a dimming of ≃ 0:5 mag in M*. We also find evidence that this smooth decline in the UV luminosity function, and hence UV luminosity density, continues to z ≃ 10. As well as considering the galaxy population at z = 9 - 10, this thesis presents a study of the stellar populations of galaxies at z ≥ 5. We are able to extend the luminosity baseline and measure the colour-magnitude relation at z = 5 - 8, through a combination of probing intrinsically faint galaxies behind cluster fields, in conjunction with both ultra-deep, pencil beam imaging such as the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) and wider, shallower imaging from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). This allows us to make inferences about the underlying stellar populations of galaxies at these epochs, and provides a unique insight into the colours of intrinsically faint, lensed galaxies as faint as M1500 ~ -14. We find that the data is consistent with an essentially unchanged average UV slope (β) for a given luminosity across the redshift range z = 5-8. We also find that the data favours a mild flattening of the colour-magnitude relation with redshift between z = 5 and z = 8.

On the Apparent Absence of Wolf–Rayet+Neutron Star Systems: The Curious Case of WR124Toala, Jesus A., Oskinova, Lidi, Hamann, W.R., Ignace, Richard, Sander, A.A. C., Todt, H., Chu, Y.H., Guerrero, M. A., Hainich, R., Hainich, R., Terrejon, J. M. 10 December 2018 (has links)
Among the different types of massive stars in advanced evolutionary stages is the enigmatic WN8h type. There are only a few Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars with this spectral type in our Galaxy. It has long been suggested that WN8h-type stars are the products of binary evolution that may harbor neutron stars (NS). One of the most intriguing WN8h stars is the runaway WR 124 surrounded by its magnificent nebula M1-67. We test the presence of an accreting NS companion in WR 124 using ~100 ks long observations by the Chandra X-ray observatory. The hard X-ray emission from WR 124 with a luminosity of L X ~ 1031 erg s−1 is marginally detected. We use the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium stellar atmosphere code PoWR to estimate the WR wind opacity to the X-rays. The wind of a WN8-type star is effectively opaque for X-rays, hence the low X-ray luminosity of WR 124 does not rule out the presence of an embedded compact object. We suggest that, in general, high-opacity WR winds could prevent X-ray detections of embedded NS, and be an explanation for the apparent lack of WR+NS systems.

The Milky Way's Most Luminous Star Clusters: Engines of Galaxy EvolutionRahman, Mubdi 19 December 2012 (has links)
Massive young star clusters and OB associations (M > 10 000 Msun) dominate the energetic feedback from stars into the interstellar medium. They contain the most massive and luminous stars in the Galaxy, which shape their environments through winds,
ionizing flux, radiation pressure, and eventually supernovae, destroying their natal
molecular clouds and inflating superbubbles. Few such clusters have been identified in our Galaxy. We systematically investigate the most luminous H II regions, which we identify using the WMAP foreground maps. We find that the 13 most luminous sources produce one-third of the Galaxy’s total ionizing luminosity, all with expected powering populations of M > 40 000 Msun. These populations are grouped in small numbers of clusters or associations for each WMAP source. The emission from these regions is dominated by the diffuse component at large radii (∼10-70 pc) indicating a high leaking fraction of ionizing photons. Using 8 μm maps from Spitzer GLIMPSE and published radio recombination line observations, we resolve the large (> 1◦) WMAP sources into 40 star forming complexes (SFCs) exhibiting shell morphology with evidence of expansion due to a central powering source. We develop a method, based on differential extinction of the galactic disk, to identify the SFC’s powering cluster candidates with 2MASS. We identify 22 cluster candidates within the 40 SFCs having extinctions consistent with their distances. With near-infrared spectroscopy from the New Technology Telescope, we have confirmed the existence of the most massive of these associations, the Dragonfish Association, with M = 100 000 Msun. Of the
50 sampled stars, we identify 2 Luminous Blue Variable candidates, a Wolf-Rayet, and 15 O-type stars, consistent with the yield expected from the candidate contamination
rate, verifying the candidate cluster identification method. This investigation doubles the number of massive young star clusters and OB associations known and produces the most complete picture of the upper end of the Galaxy’s cluster mass function to date.

Žvaigždžių spiečiai M31 galaktikos pietvakarinėje dalyje. Fotometrinė apžvalga ir populiacijos savybės / Star Clusters in the M31 Galaxy Southwest Field. Photometric Survey and Population PropertiesNarbutis, Donatas 30 December 2010 (has links)
Pagrindiniai rezultatai: (1) žvaigždžių spiečių formavimosi spartos sustiprėjimas M31 galaktikoje įvyko prieš ~70 mln. m.; (2) maždaug 10% žvaigždžių spiečių gyvena ilgiau nei 100 mln. m.; (3) būdingoji ~10^4 Saulės masių spiečiaus gyvavimo trukmė yra ~300 mln. m.; (4) žvaigždžių spiečių masių pasiskirstymas panašus į kitų mažos žvaigždėdaros spartos galaktikų žvaigždžių spiečių pasiskirstymą ir jį gerai nusako Schechter'io funkcija, kurios charakteringoji masė ~2x10^5 Saulės masių. Tai rodo, kad M31 galaktikoje yra gausi vidutinės masės žvaigždžių spiečių populiacija, kuri mūsų Galaktikoje yra... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Observational evidence that star formation proceeds in a clustered manner raises a question on the mass function of star clusters and their evolution. However, we have a limited scope of these processes in the Milky Way galaxy. The M31 galaxy is the nearest stellar system similar to our Galaxy, therefore, it is the most suitable one to provide clues for understanding the star cluster population and the evolution of galactic structures. However, detailed study of stellar populations and star clusters is a challenging task for ground-based observations due to crowded stellar fields.
Using Subaru telescope Suprime-Cam wide-field images, a survey of clusters was carried out in the disk region of the M31 galaxy southwest field, which is a close analogue to that of the Solar neighborhood in terms of chemical composition, stellar density, and quiescent star formation. Data analysis methods and programs were developed, tested, and applied for crowded wide-field image reduction and evolutionary parameter determination of semi-resolved star clusters.
The main results are: (1) enhanced star cluster formation activity in M31 occurred ~70 Myr ago; (2) approximately 10% of stars born in star clusters remain there at 100 Myr age; (3) the characteristic lifetime of a cluster of ~10^4 solar masses mass is ~300 Myr; (4) the mass function of star clusters in M31 is similar to that in other low star formation activity galaxies and it is best described by the Schechter's function with a...
