The Assyrian Diaspora: Hometown Associations as a Means to Cultural Preservation and Community Development

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Assyrians face numerous concerns resulting from the status of a stateless people. Overcoming immigrant transitions, difficulties related to diaspora, and the implications of these on Assyrian culture are pressing matters to be addressed in the evolution of the Assyrian nation. In order to develop a strategy to benefit individuals, families and the nation, Hometown Associations, a form of nonprofit organization, may be used to connect, assist, and progress Assyrian communities. This thesis provides background, rationale for, and guidelines to creating Hometown Associations for Assyrian communities. Ultimately, Hometown Associations and other forms of cultural organizations appear to be a viable means toward community solidarity and cultural preservation. However, further research and more diverse subjects are required to assess the generalizeability of the findings discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Social Justice and Human Rights 2014

Statslösa barns rätt till medborgarskap : Om möjligheterna att villkora ett automatiskt förvärv av svenskt medborgarskap för statslösa barn födda i Sverige / Stateless children’s right to a nationality : An analysis of the possibilities to condition an automatic acquisition of Swedish citizenship for stateless children born within Sweden

Mattsson, Lovisa January 2022 (has links)
Questions regarding nationality have for long been seen as a domestic issue, which is why international law has not had much influence on states’ obligations to grant citizenship to individuals. The recent augmented focus on statelessness and its consequences for both the state and the individual has, however, led to an increased international interest in regulating the matter. As a result, there are currently several international conventions concerning states' obligations to grant nationality to individuals, particularly children, who are born stateless. The Swedish regulation regarding granting citizenship to stateless children born within the state is today based on a notification procedure. The implementation of automatic acquisition of a Swedish nationality at birth for those children has also been discussed the recent years. A prerequisite for such an implementation is, however, that the automatic acquisition is conditioned by the requirement that one of the child’s parents holds a permanent residence permit. The requirement of a residence permit is, nevertheless, debated within international law whereas some treaties allow it, but others do not. It is against this background this thesis aims to examine whether Sweden can condition an automatic acquisition of citizenship, for stateless children born within the state, with the requirement that one of the child’s parents holds a residence permit. To fulfill this purpose, the legal dogmatic method has, initially, been used to establish both domestic and international law. Thereafter, the legal analytical method has been used to analyze if, and in that case, how, the use of conditions is allowed. The thesis concludes that it is possible to condition an automatic acquisition of Swedish citizenship for stateless children born in Sweden. A prerequisite for such a condition to not be contrary to international law is, nevertheless, that some amendments in the current domestic legislation first are implemented. Regarding how such a condition can be designed, the thesis concluded that it is decisive for the admissibility whether the acquisition is conditioned with temporary or permanent residence permits. In the case the acquisition is conditioned with one of the parent's possessions of a permanent residence permit, the condition can be perceived as too far-reaching and, therefore, contrary to international law. The chances that requirements of temporary residence permits are considered permissible are, however, greater and the thesis concludes that such conditions are compatible with international law.

Building Bridges Through Visual Manifestations of Statelessness : Decolonial feminism and coalitional engagement against denial of genocide in the Dominican Republic

İşleyen, Melike January 2022 (has links)
The work presented aims to show the complexity, causes, and challenges of being stateless in the Dominican Republic through the medium of documentaries. This thesis will also uncoverpossibilities of resistance and coalitional engagement. To do so, I align myself with a decolonial feminist approach, which is a way of searching for alternative ways of being, doing, sensing, knowing, and loving for resistance, change, and a different future. This approach opens the possibility to understand statelessness within the triad of modernity/coloniality/decoloniality and to move beyond the Eurocentric inventions of human rights, the concept of citizenship, and the figure of the 'citizen'. Decolonial feminism also grapples with the problem of victimization and gives us a possibility to see stateless Dominicans of Haitian descent both as an oppressed and resistant community. In a phenomenological sense, the documentaries Stateless by Michèle Stephenson (2020) and Our Lives in Transit by Sofia Olins (2015), are used in this thesis to explain and explore the lived conditions of being stateless Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic. I am conscious that film studies and particularly documentary filmmaking are colonized spaces and tools of modernity to spread the white / Anglo male gaze through the films' very impact on our senses and perception. For this reason, the work presented delinks from traditional methodologies which are often taken for granted in social sciences and migration studies. I aim to achieve this goal by practicing decolonial feminism as a theory and methodological guide for this thesis. Consequently, this thesis is a bridge-making process and an exploration of methodologies to grasp the complex reality in the Dominican Republic by practicing this work as a researcher, an audience, and a resister. Through the inspiring work of black feminists, decolonial and Caribbean scholars, but most importantly the lived experiences and voices of stateless Dominicans of Haitian descent, I intend to argue statelessness as amodern form of genocide to explain its root causes and persistence. Then, I will support this argument by bridging the links between statelessness and the coloniality of gender. Lastly, the different "world"-traveling experiences of directors Michèle Stephenson and Sofia Olins will deepen the discussion around possibilities of resistance to ongoing modes of subjugation through decolonial feminism.

Here, We Are Walking on a Clothesline: Statelessness and Human (In)Security Among Burmese Women Political Exiles Living in Thailand

Hooker, Elizabeth 01 January 2013 (has links)
An estimated twelve million people worldwide are stateless, or living without the legal bond of citizenship or nationality with any state, and consequently face barriers to employment, property ownership, education, health care, customary legal rights, and national and international protection. More than one-quarter of the world's stateless people live in Thailand. This feminist ethnography explores the impact of statelessness on the everyday lives of Burmese women political exiles living in Thailand through the paradigm of human security and its six indicators: food, economic, personal, political, health, and community security. The research reveals that exclusion from national and international legal protections creates pervasive and profound political and personal insecurity due to violence and harassment from state and non-state actors. Strong networks, however, between exiled activists and their organizations provide community security, through which stateless women may access various levels of food, economic, and health security. Using the human security paradigm as a metric, this research identifies acute barriers to Burmese stateless women exiles' experiences and expectations of well-being, therefore illustrating the potential of human security as a measurement by which conflict resolution scholars and practitioners may describe and evaluate their work in the context of positive peace.

Evaluation Of Core Stateless Guaranteed Fair Network Architecture

Akbas, Mustafa Ilhan 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The problem of providing Quality of Service (QoS) in the Internet has been an extremely active area of research and various mechanisms have been proposed related to this subject. Developing network applications have requirements such as bounded delay, jitter, minimum bandwidth and maximum loss rate. There is also a need to support large bandwidth networks because of growing link speeds. Previous QoS efforts did not fully satisfy all these needs of future networks but more recent approaches aim to be both scalable and rich in the provision of guaranteed services. Consequently core-stateless systems received much attention in recent years because of their scalability in supporting per-flow QoS. The property of not maintaining any per-flow state in the core routers is known as being core-stateless. In this thesis study, the need for core-stateless network architectures is pointed out and a literature survey about these schemes is carried out. Core-Stateless Guaranteed Fair (CSGF) network architecture, which provides deterministic fairness guarantees in a work-conserving manner, is selected and evaluated. Simulation studies about stateful Virtual Clock (VC) algorithm and CSGF&rsquo / s sub-protocols Core-Stateless Virtual Clock (CSVC), Core-Stateless Guaranteed Throughput (CSGT) and Core-Stateless Guaranteed Fairness (CSGF) are presented. Finally, the deficiencies in fairness of CSGF are demonstrated.

Role of UNHCR in case of asylum seekers, refugees and stateless persons -- the case study of Turkey / Role of UNHCR in case of asylum seekers, refugees and stateless persons – the case study of Turkey

Unzeitigová, Klára January 2015 (has links)
Inspired by the Kratochvíl, Cibulková and Beník´s model of actorness, the thesis explores the framing power of UNHCR. The critical discourse analysis introduced by Norman Fairclough is applied in order to analyze the textual, contextual and sociocultural dimension of the UNHCR framing power. The case of Turkey was chosen for this study due to the current situation and the fact that Turkey is one of the biggest hosting country in the refugees´ crisis. Through the critical discourse analysis, the thesis explores whether UNHCR is considered as a framing actor in the case of asylum seekers, refugees and stateless people in Turkey. The analysis shows that UNHCR is globally respected and takes important part in the issue. However, not all of the international organizations refer to UNHCR as the lawmaker and the initiator of debates in the issues mentioned above.
