Pressure formulation and adaptive control of numerical algorithms for transient flow in pipe networks / Albertus Johannes Kriel

Fluid flow network simulation codes are commonly used as a design and analysis tool for many engineering problems such as gas distribution networks, power plants and heat pumps. Two formulations of conservation of momentum have been widely applied in fluid flow network simulation models namely those based on static pressure and those based on total pressure. The total pressure formulations are convenient in that they eliminate the difficulties associated with the calculation of the convective terms and components such as pipe junctions are treated in a straightforward manner based on total pressure losses. However, the different formulations of total pressure for compressible and incompressible flow require different formulations of the momentum conservation equation, which is inconvenient for implementation in a generic network simulation code. In this thesis a united total pressure formulation is first derived which is valid for all fluids and therefore eliminates the inconvenience of switching between the compressible and incompressible formulations. A non-iterative method for the solution of the non-isothermal discretised equations based on the total pressure formulation is then introduced and consistency is illustrated. The method appears to be very stable for subsonic flows, while rapid steady state convergence is observed. A systematic comparison is also done with traditional static pressure based methods and the similarities and differences between the two formulations are illuminated. The different time scales involved in the simulation of transient flow in fluid networks are problematic when conventional fixed time step methods are used for time-wise integration. The time scales associated with acoustic and kinematic wave phenomena as well as storage effects can differ by orders in magnitude. This thesis also presents a simple adaptive time step algorithm which can be readily used in conjunction with all the commonly used first order methods for fluid flow networks. Two test problems are selected to demonstrate the efficiency and savings obtained with this procedure. The adaptive time step algorithm correctly selects appropriate time steps for all phenomena and significant computational savings are observed for accurate integration. In addition, a procedure is implemented which automatically selects the appropriate integration method. The resulting algorithm is a fully adaptive algorithm which switches between a fully implicit method and a semi-implicit method. Two test problems are once again used to demonstrate the efficiency and savings. Physical fitness, body composition and pedometer measured physical activity in children in a rural Manitoba community

A child’s level of physical activity is an important component of that child’s health. Our understanding of physical activity patterns in children is limited in rural settings, and virtually absent for climates with snow cover. Opportunities for physical activity intervention need to be identified. PURPOSE: Investigation of the relationships between pedometer-measured physical activity, body composition and aerobic performance in rural children in the winter and examination of within-day variation in stepping behavior using interval pedometry. METHODS: Aerobic performance (20 m shuttle run) with “talk test” validation and body composition (BMI, BF) were measured during mid-winter during the school year in 8 to 10 year old children. Pedometer step counts were recorded at 6 intervals throughout the day for 7 days. RESULTS: Fifty-six subjects (22 males and 34 females, mean age 9.09 (0.49), had the following measurements; BMI 17.9 (3.3), BF% 24.3 (9.5) (tricep/calf), 10,465 (±2506) steps/day, VO2 45.12 ml/kg/min (±2.87), shuttle run stage 3.0 (±1.34). Weekday steps/day (11,422 ±2573) were greater than weekend (8,112, ±3499) steps/day for both boys and girls (p<0.01). Town children recorded 1800 more steps/day than out of town children (p<0.01). All measures of body composition were found to be significantly related to aerobic power (p<0.01). Weekday steps were related to aerobic performance. The fittest (upper 1/3) children were leaner and had more afternoon school steps, and higher afternoon school step rates. CONCLUSION: Daily step counts were 2000-4000 steps lower than other studies and may be an impact of winter in Manitoba or the rural setting. This was consistent with overall low aerobic performance and higher adiposity of the children. Interval pedometry was capable of identifying differences in activity patterns between most and least fit children in rural Manitoba providing for targeted intervention strategies.

Imaging bone fractures using ultrasonic scattered wavefields: numerical and in-vitro studies

Ultrasound has been widely used in medical diagnostic imaging to image soft tissues. Compared with other methods, ultrasound is superior with no ionizing-radiation, easy portability, low cost, and the capability to provide elasticity information. Conventional ultrasound images provide distorted image information when the ultrasound beam is not normal to the bone structures. In this thesis, we present two imaging algorithms: reverse time migration (RTM) and split-step Fourier migration (SSFM), to image long bones using ultrasound. The methods are tested using simulated data sets. The reconstructed images show accurate cortical thickness measurement and provide the correct fracture dip. The images also clearly illustrate the healing process of a 1-mm wide crack with different in-filled tissue velocities simulating fracture healing. Two in-vitro examples using fractured bones are also presented. The study has showed that the migration methods have great potential to quantify bone fractures and monitor the fracture healing process.
