Effect of material grade on fatigue strength and residual stresses in high strength steel welds

This thesis work is concerned with effect of material grade on fatigue strength of welded joints. Fatigue strength evaluation of welded joints in as welded and post weld treated condition was carried out with effective notch method. Results of peak stress method have also been compared with those of effective notch method for as welded joints. In addition, using the results of effective notch method, the effect of important weld and global geometry factors on notch stress concentration factor has been studied with 2-level design of experiment and a mathematical relation among stress concentration factor and the geometric factors has been proposed. Overall, thickness of the base plate and toe radius is found to be the most important factors determining fatigue strength of the joint. Welding induced residual stresses have also been predicted using 2D and 3D FEM analysis to see their effect on fatigue strength of the joints. Also, transversal residual stresses were measured using X-ray diffraction method to assess the accuracy of predicted results. Based on simulation results, effect of geometric factors on maximum value of transversal residual stress was also investigated.

Four sections of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) were constructed at the University of São Paulo campus in order to introduce this kind of pavement structure to Brazil\'s technical transportation community. Sections were designed as 50 m long concrete slab, short in comparison to traditional CRCP, in order to simulate bus stops and terminals - locations of critical interest for public infrastructure. The thesis presented herein concludes this research project initiated in 2010. As the initial goal of this study was the development of coherent, reliable and intuitive design recommendations for the use of CRCP technology in Brazil, a profound understating of its structural and performance peculiarities was needed. For that, the cracking process of the experimental CRCP sections was recorded over a span of seven years. Due to the sections\' short length and lack of anchorage, the experimental \"short\" CRCP presented a cracking behavior quite different than traditional CRCP. There were much less visible cracks than expected. To address this issue, a novel technology in ultrasonic non-destructive testing of concrete structures was applied. Through ultrasonic signal interpretation it was possible to discover several incipient non-visible cracks within the slabs - many of these became apparent on the slab surface in later crack surveys - and to characterize visible and non-visible cracks regarding crack depth. The updated crack map with non-visible cracks showed similarities with traditional CRCP. Additionally, the ultrasonic data analysis provided important information on thickness variation, reinforcement location and concrete condition that were applied in theoretical simulations (finite element software) of the short CRCP. Simulations were attempted considering different slab geometries, firstly with transverse cracks as joints with high load transfer efficiency (LTE) and secondly with a continuous slab without cracks or joints. The latter simulation was more accurate reaching a shift factor between field and simulated stresses in the order of 0.7 to 1.0. Deflection data and LTE analysis from cracks and panels in between cracks further attested the slab continuous behavior, which contradicts current CRCP design models and performance predictors. Furthermore, critical traffic and environmental loading conditions concerning Brazil\'s climate and bus traffic characteristics were investigated and related using a selected fatigue model resulting in design recommendations in a chart format for the short CRCP aimed at long-term projects for over 20 years of operation. The design chart was successfully applied to investigate three failures presented by the experimental short CRCP due to thickness deficiencies pointed out by the ultrasonic testing. / Quatro seções de pavimento de concreto continuamente armado (PCCA) foram construídas no campus da Universidade de São Paulo, com o objetivo de introduzir esta estrutura, de reconhecido sucesso internacional, à comunidade técnica de engenharia de transportes brasileira. As seções foram projetadas com uma placa de concreto de 50 m de extensão, curta em comparação ao PCCA tradicional, com a finalidade de simular paradas e terminais de ônibus - locais de grande interesse para a infraestrutura pública. A tese aqui apresentada conclui este projeto de pesquisa iniciado em 2010. Como o objetivo inicial deste estudo foi o desenvolvimento de recomendações de projeto coerentes, confiáveis e intuitivas para a utilização do PCCA no Brasil, foi necessário um profundo entendimento de suas peculiaridades estruturais e de desempenho. Para isso, o processo de fissuração das secções experimentais foi acompanhado durante sete anos. Devido à curta extensão e falta de ancoragem das seções, o PCCA \"curto\" apresentou um padrão de fissuração diferente do PCCA tradicional com muito menos fissuras visíveis na superfície do que o esperado. Para abordar esta questão, uma nova tecnologia ultrassônica para ensaios não destrutivos de estruturas de concreto foi aplicada. Pela interpretação do sinal de ultrassom, foi possível descobrir várias fissuras incipientes (não visíveis) dentro das placas - muitas dessas foram observadas na superfície da placa em levantamentos de fissuras posteriores - e caracterizar fissuras visíveis e não-visíveis quanto à profundidade da fissura. Simulações foram propostas considerando diferentes geometrias, primeiramente com fissuras transversais como juntas com alta eficiência de transferência de carga (LTE) e posteriormente com uma placa contínua, sem fissuras ou juntas. Esta última simulação foi mais precisa alcançando um fator de conversão entre tensões de campo e simuladas na ordem de 0,7 a 1,0. Dados de deflexão e análise de LTE em fissuras e placas entre fissuras atestaram novamente o comportamento contínuo das placas, o que vai em contradição com os modelos atuais de dimensionamento e de previsão de desempenho para o PCCA. Ademais, o tráfego crítico e condições de carga ambiental correspondentes ao clima e tráfego de ônibus típicos brasileiros foram investigados e relacionados usando um modelo de fadiga resultando em recomendações de projeto para o PCCA de curta extensão sendo direcionado para projetos de longo prazo para mais de 20 anos de operação. O gráfico de projeto foi aplicado com sucesso para investigar três falhas apresentadas pelo PCCA curto experimental devido a deficiências de espessura apontadas pelo teste ultrassônico.

New concept, implementation and analysis of the multicell piezoelectric motor for the control of the car seat position / Conception, réalisation et caractérisation d'un moteur piézoélectrique multicellulaire, pour applications automobiles

L’étude présentée est le fruit d’une collaboration entre le groupe de recherche de l'Electrodynamique du INP-ENSEEIHT (Toulouse), LAPLACE Laboratoire de Recherche et l'École Polytechnique de Gdańsk, le Département Génie Electrique et Automatique. L’objectif de cet projet est la conception d’un moteur piézoélectrique multicellulaire composé de plusieurs stators de moteurs à rotation de mode (3 au minimum) permettant de garantir des fréquences de résonance élevées ainsi qu’une répartition des efforts de frottement plus favorables. Le dimensionnement du moteur s’appuiera sur un cahier des charges du domaine de l’automobile, en visant une structure la plus simple possible à mettre en oeuvre. Outre un travail important concernant la conception, il faudra procéder à sa caractérisation après la réalisation du prototype. La dernière étape concernera la définition des stratégies d’alimentation et de commande d’une telle structure qui posera inévitablement le problème de l’autoadaptativité des cellules résonantes à une même fréquence de résonance. Le moteur multicellular (MPM) proposé sera une combinaison du moteur à onde progressive annulaire (Shinsei) et moteur à rotation de mode. Il combine les avantages des deux moteurs par une combinaison de trois cellules élémentaires de moteurs à rotation de mode. La combinaison de ces deux concepts, accroît le nombre de surface de contact. Les dimensions préliminaires et les paramètres de la MPM prototype ont été vérifiés en utilisant son modèle développé analytique (géométrique) et méthodes numériques (MÉF). Le modèle analytique de la MPM a été développé sur la base de circuit équivalent de la Langevin actuateur. La model analytique a été fait dans Matlab. Les principaux paramètres calculés sont: fréquence de résonance 26.2 kHz, couple bloque 0.4 Nm et la vitesse 40 tr/mn. En utilisant le modèle MÉF les fréquences de résonance et les valeurs du stress de la MPM prototype ont été déterminés. . Des simulations ont été effectuées pour sélectionner la fréquence de résonance et la forme pour concevoir le contre mass. Les fréquences de résonances résultantes sont 25.6 kHz et simulations du stress moins de 9 N/mm2. Comparaison des résultats fréquence de résonance calcule à modèle analytique (26.2 kHz) et le modèle FEM (25.6 kHz) du une prototype MPM, il convient de noter, que de modèle analytique est fortement modèle précis. Enfin, la réalisation des pièces par imprimante 3D a été décidée (contre-mass et carter) et les matériaux: aluminium et nylatron. Les autres parties ont été réalisés sur une machine à commande numérique à l'aide de l'acier. Les mesures de la MPM prototype ont été effectuées. L'étape suivante a consisté à tester le moteur et vérifier la fréquence de résonance, et la mesure de déplacement, résonances fréquences résultantes sont 22 kHz et déplacement 1.1 μm sur rotor/stator point du contact. Finalement, les paramètres mécaniques ont été mesurés. Les meilleurs paramètres mécaniques ont été obtenus sur dSpace support de laboratoire: vitesse - 46-48 tr/mn, et le couple bloqué – 0.4 Nm. Les résultats sont satisfaisants et donnent un bon point de départ pour les futurs travaux. / The research works in the frame of the dissertation have been carried out with the cooperation between the University INP - ENSEEIHT - LAPLACE (Laboratory on Plasma and Conversion of Energy), Toulouse, France, and the Gdańsk University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering, Research Unit Power Electronics and Electrical Machines, Gdańsk, Poland. The main scope of the dissertation was following: development a novel concept, implementation and analysis of the multicell piezoelectric motor (MPM) for the control of the car seat position. The new concept of the MPM is based on a combined topology using the working principles of the traveling wave motor/actuator (known as the Shinsei motor), and the electromechanical structure of the rotating-mode motor/actuator. The electromechanical structure of each rotating-mode motor has been considered as an independent one – referred to as a "single cell". The application of the novel MPM for the control of the car seat position will reduce the number of gears due to its direct coupling with the driving/movement shaft of the seat positioning system. The achieved effects of a such integrated structure will be following: a higher efficiency, a lower noise of performance, a low cost of manufacturing, and in general a lower pollution of the environment. The preliminary dimensions and parameters of the prototype MPM have been verified using its developed analytical (geometrical) model and numerical methods (FEM). The prototype MPM has been manufactured. Finally, the laboratory measurements of the MPM prototype has been carried out.

Caractérisation et simulation de défauts induits par laser 1340 nm continu sur la technologie 28FDSOI en analyse de défaillance électrique / Characterization and simulation of defects induced by a continuous wave laser during electrical failure analysis on the 28FDSOI technology

Face à la densité importante d’intégration des transistors et du nombre de niveau de métallisation, la localisation de défaut en analyse se fait principalement par la face arrière du composant. Cette analyse par la face arrière impose l’utilisation systématique de lentille à immersion solide et de la microscopie à balayage laser afin de limiter la contrainte de la résolution spatiale et de la sensibilité. Les objectifs sont de déterminer les dégradations induites par un laser 1340 nm continu sur la technologie 28FDSOI et de fournir un outil de simulation permettant de prédire la dose admissible par les transistors. L’étude commence par la reproduction et la caractérisation du défaut induit par le laser. Les résultats montrent principalement une diffusion des interconnexions grille-contacts en NiPtSi. Basé sur ces observations, un modèle de stimulation laser thermique est construit, puis testé sur une structure élémentaire. Les résultats montrent que la température peut atteindre des valeurs suffisamment élevées pour provoquer la diffusion du siliciure et expliquer les observations. Dans la dernière partie, le modèle est mis à l’épreuve sur des structures réelles. Le défaut est caractérisé paramétriquement en utilisant la cartographie de fréquence. Parallèlement, la simulation est appliquée sur ces mêmes structures. Les résultats montrent une bonne capacité du modèle à prédire le seuil de dégradation des transistors sous stimulation thermique laser. / Faced with the high density of integration of the transistors and the number of metallization level, fault localization in analysis is mainly done by the rear face of the component. This backside analysis requires the systematic use of solid immersion lenses and laser scanning microscopy to limit the stress of spatial resolution and sensitivity. The objectives are to determine the degradation induced by a continuous 1340 nm laser on the 28FDSOI technology and to provide a simulation tool for predicting the allowable dose by the transistors. The study begins with the reproduction and characterization of the laser-induced defect. The results mainly show a diffusion of grid-contact interconnections in NiPtSi. Based on these observations, a model of thermal laser stimulation is built and then tested on an elemental structure. The results show that the temperature can reach sufficiently high values to cause the diffusion of the silicide and to explain the observations. In the last part, the model is put to the test on real structures. The defect is characterized parametrically using frequency mapping. Simultaneously, the simulation is applied to these same structures faithfully. The results show a good ability of the model to predict the degradation threshold of the transistors under laser thermal stimulation.
