Student nurses' experiences of the clinical field in the Limpopo Province as learning field: a phenomenological studyMongwe, Rirhandzu Norah 30 June 2007 (has links)
The research question the researcher set out to answer was: How do student nurses experience learning in the clinical field? The research question stemmed from years of experience in nursing education and a concern about student nurses' involvement in the clinical area.
A phenomenological investigation was embarked upon involving principles from Wertz's (1983, 1984, 1985) empirical psychological reflection. The existential base-line for the research was stated as: Human experience results in learning. The base-line also supported the assumptions underlying the current research and are in line with phenomenological philosophy.
Participants were selected from the student nurse population in the Limpopo Province via convenience and purposive sampling. Five students from second through fourth year of training according to SANC Regulation R425 were selected.
Data were collected through in-depth interviews. One initial and one follow-up interview were conducted with each participant. Interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim.
Data analysis at the idiographic and nomothetic levels was conducted through open coding, categorisation and constant comparative analysis.
Four major themes emerged from the data namely:
* Descriptive overview of clinical learning
* The lived experience of student nurses
* Motivational factors in clinical learning
* Erosive factors in clinical learning
Awareness figured as an all accommodating concept to theme and categories. It figured as a multi-dimensional concept that positions and orientates student nurses in the clinical setting. Awareness answers the student nurse's existential question:
Where am I?
Based on the findings OF the current research and guided by the concept of an integrated holistic awareness, conclusions were drawn and recommendations and guidelines were formulated relating to: nursing education, nursing management, cooperation between education and services, clinical teaching, future research and theory development. / Health Studies / D.Litt. et Phil. Effectiveness of simulation training to improve pupil nurses' clinical competencePowell, Elizabeth Maria 02 October 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of simulation training in improving
the clinical competence of pupil nurses.
A quantitative, quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group before-after design is
used. The method of data collection is observation using check lists.
The population for this study includes the second-year pupil nurses (N=43) following the
two-year programme leading to enrolment as a nurse at the Gauteng learning centre of
a private hospital group during 2011-2012.
The results reveal that although there is proof that clinical training in simulation
improves the competence levels of the experimental group in the procedure
administration of oral medication over a period of time, there is no proof that this is true
for the procedure observation of patients’ neurological functions and, therefore, the
researcher cannot come to a definite conclusion about the effectiveness of simulation

South African nurses have accepted the challenge that was brought about by the Health
Reform Policy of 1990 which opened health service centres to people of all racial and
cultural groups. However, recent studies on multicultural nursing have revealed that
problems have occurred when delivering care across cultural barriers. Most of these studies
have approached these problems from the patients point of view, where issues of
dehumanized care, labelling and discrimination have been reported.
Therefore, this study was an attempt to look into these problems from the nurses point of
view, by exploring the source of these problems, their effect on health care delivery and
possible solutions. The researcher focussed on three critical issues, namely, lack of cultural
knowledge, negative attitudes, as well as difficulty in communication.
Through focus group interviews (FGI) and responses to given scenarios, student nurses who
had experienced problems with culturally different patients were given a chance to reflect
on their experiences, report on these experiences and recommend possible solutions to the
experienced problems.
The results revealed that:
1. The major source of the problems was lack of experience due to inadequate exposure to
culturally diverse groups which in tum led to inappropriate decisions and actions at care
delivery level.
2.Difficult perceptions and negative attitudes lead to the formation of stereotypes which
block the delivery of culturally congruent care.
3 .Inability to communicate due to differences in spoken language lead to difficulty in

Background
Trauma is the leading cause of death in the young (ages 1-44) and the current life
situation is responsible for producing emergency injuries from motor vehicle
accidents, violence and from acute life threatening illnesses. The training of
emergency nurses is therefore of priority based on the increasing demands on the
entire emergency health care system. The study evaluates the education and
training of emergency nursing programme that has been offered for the past
seven (7) years at a Nursing Education Institution (NEI) in the Limpopo province.
The programme has not has not been formally evaluated.
Aim
The overall aim of the study is to explore and describe the views of students pertaining
to the emergency nursing programme offered at the NEI in the Limpopo province and to
make recommendations for the refinement of the emergency nursing programme,
based on the views of the nursing students.
Methods
A qualitative design working from an Appreciative Inquiry approach was employed.
Purposive sampling was used and focus group interviews were conducted with 20
Professional nurses who are trained as emergency nurses at the NEI from 2007 to
2013.
Two main themes emerged: theoretical aspects and clinical aspects, which included
both positive and negative views. The findings were used to make recommendations

M.Phil. (Subject Didactics) / The urgency of the issues concerning man's relationship to the natural environment is confirmed by the large-scale publicity given these issues by the media. This has resulted in a fairly general public awareness of environmental issues, which is at present reflected by numerous efforts to further stimulate positive interests in conservation and the responsible use of natural resources. It is generally accepted that the next generation of decisionmakers should be more thoroughly equipped to face these environmental issues and problems, some of which threaten life's very existence. Over the past 15 years, therefore, several organizations have accepted the responsibility of making schoolchildren much more aware of the environment and of encouraging in them a sense of· responsibility towards it. To date, however, efforts to bring this about have been made outside the formal education sector. In fact, there are indications that Environmental Education has had very little impact on our school programmes. It appears that particularly those school subjects which are supposed to introduce pupils to aspects of the natural environment, are still taught as if there were nothing wrong with the environment and as if the environment were just another topic to be studied. Environmental issues are avoided in most current school syllabuses, designed as they are to prepare pupils academically for university or the labour market. However, there are indications that, particularly as a result of increased public pressure, the formal education sector will eventually have to accept responsibility for assimilating the principles of Environmental Education into school curricula. The White Paper on Environmental Education (April 1989) seems to support this. It is generally accepted· that Environmental. Education will not be regarded as a new school subject, but that it will re-emphasize classic educational principles aimed at encouraging positive pupil attitudes towards the environment. These attitudes can be define by terms such as responsibility, concern, inclination towards conservation, environmental awareness and respect for creation.

In a fast-paced dynamic world, the key to success lies in the ability to accept change and to rapidly respond to demands placed by ever increasing competitive environments. In business, the impact of products and services in meeting or exceeding customer’s expectations in such environments is measured by customer satisfaction and the importance thereof cannot be downplayed, thus providing management with a metric that guides and augments change. Subsequently, these dynamic competitive forces are pushing sectors such as Higher Education into the realm of service industries, where stakeholders such as students and alumni are viewed as customers. Correspondingly, measuring their satisfaction has become important as this provides strategic insight, whilst enhancing academic programmes and the student experience. The purpose of this research study was to identify the factors that determined satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by students and the alumni of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School. Furthermore, it advanced the field of stakeholder theory by identifying alumni as a key stakeholder in business schools. Consequently, the research was exploratory and consisted of quantitative and literature components where hypotheses were developed and relationships between factors analysed, in addition to the literature reviewed. The literature introduced key concepts to this study, such as alumni as stakeholder, alumni satisfaction, satisfaction with the MBA programme, measuring alumni satisfaction, MBA alumni networks and alumni communication. The factors that determined alumni satisfaction were identified by means of a statistical analysis of the data collected by the research instruments. Correspondingly, the findings indicate various factors determine satisfaction with the independent variables highlighted in this study, which are the Facilities, the MBA Programme, the Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School brand and Communication. Furthermore, it was established that there is a significant link between Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School Brand, Communication and Alumni Satisfaction.As services industries such as Higher Educational Institutions get exposed to competitive pressure, customer satisfaction comes to the fore and there are certain factors that need to be addressed to enhance satisfaction. Subsequently, this study highlights this pressure and satisfaction levels can certainly be improved by the institution across all the independent variables identified, especially in areas such as the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter and Communication. Consequently, the NMMU Business School, for the first time have metrics to identify the factors that determine satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by their alumni and resultantly can strategically benefit by taking the views of their most important stakeholder into account.

The silencing of race at Rhodes: ritual and anti-politics on a post-apartheid campusGoga, Safiyya January 2009 (has links)
Almost fifteen years after democracy, issues of 'race' still hold daily South African life firmly in its grip. Following calls from foremost South African theorists on 'race', such as Sarah Nuttall, this thesis moves beyond a study of crude 'racism', to the more complex consideration of 'race' as an embedded ideological social formation within the spatial context of Rhodes University. Using analytical concepts such as 'silencing' and 'ritual' the thesis weaves an understanding (1) of how particular powerful representations of institutional history are produced and made dominant, and (2) how seemingly innocuous performances of institutional identity are key to reproducing 'racial' dominance within Rhodes' student life. This ultimately manifests in the production of a deeply 'racialized' commonsensical understanding of the 'most' legitimate and authentic representation and ownership of institutional space. The thesis delves into dominant representations of Rhodes University'S history, considering how these help produce and reproduce 'racial' dominance through, for instance, the production of defining apolitical narratives of 'excellence'. Central to the dominant apolitical institutional history is the production of silences about the past. History, I argue, is less compelling in any revelation of 'what happened' than in illustrating the production of silences used to enable the appropriation of a particular history as the sole relevant history. The 'inheritors of the past', those who are able to lay authoritative and representative claim to it, it is argued, ultimately claim ownership over institutional space. I argue too, that the dominant practices and performances of daily institutional life (re)produce the institutional space as a space of 'racial' dominance. Ritualized performance of the dominant institutional identity produces ownership of institutional space through making some articulations of 'Rhodes identity' more acceptable, legitimate and authentic than others. The dominance of 'drinking culture' in Rhodes student life produces a particular 'racialized' institutional identity as most legitimate. 'Racial' dominance is instituted, consecrated and reproduced through the ritualistic performance of 'drinking culture', which ultimately produces a superior claim of ownership over the institutional space through the reiteration of racial domination that these performances of institutional identity powerfully symbolize.

M.A. / Identity development has a definite influence on a broad spectrum of developmental domains. This study focuses on specific domains such as student- and career development as facilitating structures from which the formation of a personal identity can be studied and understood. The purpose of this study is to undertake a descriptive investigation into the process of identity development during the late adolescent and early adulthood phases of college students. This developmental process has a definite influence on student development within aspects such as career maturity, intimacy and interpersonal relationships. These aspects' relevance to identity formation is also highlighted. This study utilises theories such as the psychosocial developmental perspective of Erik H. Erikson to investigate the purpose of a variety of factors within the sphere of student and career development. The test sample consisted of 78 students between the ages of 18 and 27 years from the Park Town Tertiary College. The following questionnaires were completed: the Extended Version of the Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status Questionnaire (EOM-EIS); the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ) and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory (SDTLI). Taking the descriptive quality of this study in consideration, the statistical techniques used in the analysis of the quantitative data included canonical correlation analysis. The study concentrated on possible interventions and recommendations that takes the influence of identity developmental processes and career maturity in consideration with issues such as curriculum compilations, teaching methods and tertiary educational systems.
