Since its publication in 1989, Kazuo Ishiguro’s third novel, The Remains of the Day, has received a great deal of attention. It has been the object of criticism as well as acclaim and even been turned into film. It is the purpose of this essay to explore reader communication and characterisation The Remains of the Day by analysing its narratee, i.e. the receiver of the narrator’s story within the text. This entails the application of a reader response approach on the level of the narrative. More precisely, the investigation focuses on the functions of the narratee in the areas of reader communication and characterisation of the narrator and main character of the novel, Stevens. I argue that the narratee, as an agent of the narrative, has two prominent functions in the novel: the first is as a tool for the author in the characterisation of the narrator of the story, and the second is as a device for achieving communication between author and reader. My thesis is that the narratee is not utilised in a mere supportive capacity in the novel, but as a primary way of achieving reader communication and characterisation of the narrator. Thus, methodologically this investigation is performed in part by reconstructing the narratee, and in part by analysing the communicative situation contained in the narrative. The investigation yields ample evidence to support that the narratee, as a device of the narrative, is utilised as a primary way of achieving reader communication and characterisation of the narrator in the novel. The narratee’s indirect influence in the novel is surprisingly tangible and the narratee is revealed as a major mover of the narrative. In addition to this, the analysis shows that the narrator can also be his own narratee. In this regard Stevens’s role in the narrative is twofold: he is both the narrator, who tells his story, and the narratee, who receives the story. The duality serves to highlight and reconcile the complexities and idiosyncrasies of his conflicted character, as well as make the narrative more accessible to the reader.

Denna uppsats behandlar adjektivets a- och e-ändelser i personsyftande bestämda nominalfraser. Syftet med studien är att se om det har skett en förändring i bruket av dessa former i tidningstext, och främst om e-ändelser har ökat för kvinnliga referenter och neutrumord samt a-ändelser för manliga referenter. Undersökningen är korpusbaserad och har genomförts i Språkbankens konkordanser, Press 65 och Press 98, där femtio adjektiv har valts ut och undersökts med båda formerna. Resultaten av undersökningen är att e-ändelser för kvinnliga referenter samt neutrumord har ökat något och även att a-ändelsen har ökat för manliga referenter. Detta tyder på att det har skett en uppluckring av den traditionella användningen av adjektivändelserna under den aktuella perioden. Undersökningen visar även att a-ändelsen har ökat i användning över lag samt att vissa adjektiv har förändrats mer än andra.

Vi ville i den här kvalitativa studien studera om individer konsumerar olika utifrån sina yrkesroller. Om individer t ex genom sin konsumtion försöker att kompensera ett arbete utan upplevelser eller tillfredställelser? För att få svar på våra funderingar så har vi intervjuat individer inom chefsyrken och arbetaryrken, för att få perspektiv på om och konsumtionen skiljer sig åt och hur. Vi har även visat på olika teorier som tar upp de teman som vi valt att förhålla oss till under studiens gång. Dessa teman går som en röd tråd genom hela uppsatsen och behandlar konsumtion, roll/performance, klass/status. Resultatet av studien visar på hur komplext begreppet konsumtion är och hur yrkesrollen påverkar människor på olika sätt. Vi påverkas både omedvetet och medvetet av vår konsumtion, och det är det vi fått ta del av i denna studie.

I denna språkvetenskapliga uppsats inom ämnet språk och kön undersöker jag svenska konstsagor ur sagosamlingen Bland tomtar och troll ur ett genusperspektiv. Mitt syfte är att undersöka ifall det finns eller har funnits några skillnader mellan konstsagor skrivna av kvinnliga och manliga författare när det gäller personbeskrivande adjektiv och val av persongalleri. Analysmaterialet består av fyra årgångar Bland tomtar och troll (1913–1992) och hela analysmaterialet innehåller sex sagor av kvinnliga författare och sex sagor av manliga författare. Jag använder mig av både kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder. Resultatet visar att det finns skillnader mellan sagor skrivna av kvinnliga och manliga författare och att dessa skillnader är störst i början av 1900-talet. Den mest påfallande skillnaden ligger i valet av persongalleri: de kvinnliga författarna föredrar prinsessor medan de manliga författarna föredrar hjältar. Resultatet visar också att de kvinnliga författarna beskriver sina personer mer utförligt än de manliga författarna.

English title: "Motivated system technician wanted" A study of the relationship between two parts in job advertisements". The purpose of this study is to describe the linguistics of job advertisements. The focus is on discursive practice and how the relation between employer and the proposed employee is created through the process of communication in job advertisements. The method concists of two parts: A critical discourse analysis using the three dimensional model for critical discourse analysis by Fairclough and a text analysis inspired by Hellspong & Ledin. 40 job advertisements were examined and the analysis revealed that the majority belongs to the category traditional job advertisement and a minority uses more than one discourse. The linguistic analysis shows elements that increase communication between transmitters and receivers.
