Ghosts before breakfast for chamber ensemble and electronics and a history of the electronic music studios of the University of Iowa (1964-2017)Wilson, Jonathan James 15 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of the composition Ghosts Before Breakfast for chamber ensemble and fixed electronics. In this work I was interested in the creation of unity in the horizontal, vertical, and structural dimensions of a composition between the ensemble and the electronics and using electronic music techniques to gradually unify the ensemble and tape parts.
Part 2 consists of an investigation into the development of the Electronic Music Studios of the University of Iowa when James Cessna from the Department of Physics and Astronomy came up with a Master’s Thesis project to design an Arbitrary Waveform Generator. An initial discussion with James Van Allen, James Cessna, Himie Voxman, and Philip Bezanson in 1964 led to the initiation of the program with the loan of equipment from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Collins Radio Company, and homemade devices. The outcome of this interdisciplinary project between the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Music led to a transformation of the Composition Program, and the studios evolved into a nationally recognized center for the study of electronic music. Its legacy lives on through its students who have reaped the benefits of the program and made successful careers throughout the country from the development of studios at other colleges and universities to work for film industries in Hollywood and New York. A history of the Electronic Music Studios shall be discussed, through the professors who have directed this program, its facilities, its assistants who maintained the facilities, its students, its guests, and its performances.

Hantering av mät-filer från Wi-Fi fjärrkontroll / MANAGEMENT OF MEASUREMENT FILES FROM WI-FI REMOTE CONTROLKalo, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
A measuring system Striton has been developed at the department of biomedicalengineering, University Hospital of Umeå, for motion analysis using motion sensors whichattaches to the patient’s lower body to assess the risk for potential neurological andmusculoskeletal damage. The measuring system is comprised of two motion sensor unitsand a remote control where data is gathered based on step height, step width, theorientation of the calves and step frequency. The motion sensor units which attach to thecalves are comprised of a MCU with a built in Wi-Fi module, a IMU and and time-of-flightsensors. Data is transferred through Wi-Fi and stored on a SD-card as CSV-files on theremote control which is comprised of a Raspberry Pi Zero WH running a Linux operatingsystem (Raspbian). The remote control also has the functions to initiate and complete ameasurement as well as mark an event. The extraction of data from the remote control toanother unit for analysis occurs through SSH and SFTP using third-party programs whichmay require technical knowledge. A unique software was designed specifically for Stritonfor the operating system Windows 10 using Visual Studio (2019) which provides thefunctions to connect to a predefined Wi-Fi access point as well as automatically reconnectto previously connected access point at shutdown, connect through SFTP, list the savedfiles on the remote control, perform file operations, synchronize the date and time on theremote control as well as change settings in the software which is saved locally in a settingsfile. The user interface is minimalistic with the intention to reduce complexity and timerequirement to extract the data from the measuring system Striton. / Ett mätsystem Striton har utvecklats av CMTS, Medicinsk Teknik – FoU på NorrlandsUniversitetssjukhus för rörelseanalys med hjälp av rörelsesensorer som fästs på patientensunderben för att bedöma en potentiell neurologisk samt muskuloskeletal skada.Mätsystemet består av två sensorenheter samt en fjärrkontroll där data samlas in baseratpå höjd av steg, stegbredd, underbenens orientering samt stegfrekvens. Sensorenheternasom fästs på underbenen består av en MCU med inbyggd Wi-Fi modul, IMU och time-offlight sensorer. Data förs över via Wi-Fi och lagras på ett SD-kort i form av CSV-filer påfjärrkontrollen beståendes av en Raspberry Pi Zero WH som driver ett Linuxoperativsystem (Raspbian). Gränssnittet ärminimalistiskt med syfte att reducera komplexiteten samt tidsåtgången för extrahering avdata från mätsystemet Striton.

Business Model Innovation in the Film Industry : How Nordic Film Studios Adapt to a Changing MarketKnobloch, Paulina Merle January 2021 (has links)
During the last 15 years, the film industry has undergone severe technological, cultural, and economic transformations initiated through online film distribution. Existing players need to adapt and innovate their business models to stay competitive. However, there is little knowledge about what players actually do in this respect. Since the film industry is of great economic and cultural importance, it is essential for researchers and managers alike to understand the transformations in the business models of film companies. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate which areas of the business models of Nordic film studios have been most affected by changes and how the studios have responded to these transformations. Based on a longitudinal, comparative case study of the companies SF Studios and Nordisk Film, the study reveals that distribution channels, revenue streams, margins, partner network, customer needs, and core offerings have changed the most. The main transformations can be seen in stronger partnerships and an increased focus on in-house production to serve the high demand for content, secure a content flow for distribution, and generate new revenues. / Under de senaste 15 åren har filmindustrin genomgått stora tekniska, kulturella och ekonomiska förändringar som inleddes av den digitala filmdistributionens uppkomst. För att förbli konkurrenskraftiga måste nuvarande aktörer anpassa och förnya sina affärsmodeller. Det finns dock lite kunskap om vad företagen faktiskt gör i detta avseende. Eftersom filmindustrin har ett stort ekonomiskt och kulturellt värde är det avgörande att förstå förändringar i filmbolagens affärsmodeller, både för forskare och ledare. Syftet med denna uppsats är därför att undersöka vilka delar av nordiska filmstudiors affärsmodeller som är mest drabbade av förändringar och hur studiorna har reagerat på detta. Baserat på en longitudinell, jämförande fallstudie av företagen SF Studios och Nordisk Film visar denna studie att distributionskanaler, intäkter, marginaler, partnernätverk, kundbehov och kärnutbud har förändrats mest. De huvudsakliga förändringarna visas i starkare partnerskap och ett ökat fokus på egen produktion, för att uppfylla den höga efterfrågan på innehåll, säkra ett innehållsflöde för distribution samt generera nya intäkter.

Artists are exposed to numerous respiratory health hazards in the production of art. Little is known of artists' studio behaviors or of their health beliefs related to respiratory toxins. The Health Belief Model hypothesizes that individuals require a minimal level of relevant health motivation and knowledge before attempting to prevent a health condition, as well as a perception of their vulnerability to health conditions they view as threatening, conviction in the efficacy of preventive behaviors, and a perception that recommended preventive action entails few difficulties. This descriptive and exploratory study, conducted within the framework of the Health Belief Model, seeks to determine artists' knowledge, health beliefs, and preventive studio practices related to occupational respiratory health risks.

Precarious practices : artists, work and knowing-in-practiceMichael, Maureen K. January 2015 (has links)
This study presents a new perspective on work practice in conceptual art. Using ethnographic evidence from five visual artists, the study used a combined visual arts and practice orientated perspective to explore the materiality of their everyday work and the sociomaterial practices shaping it. Close scrutiny is given to the forms of expertise embedded in this through concepts of knowing-in-practice and epistemic objects. Emerging from the findings is clearer understanding of how an arts-based methodology might enhance knowledge about artists’ knowing-in-practice. Popular representations of contemporary artists often ignore the realities of precarious work. This is reflected in the professional education of artists with its concentration on studio-based activities and emphasis on the production and products of artmaking. This study reconfigures and reconceptualises the work of artists as assemblages of sociomaterial practices that include, but are not limited to artmaking – so providing a different representation of the work of artists as a continuous collaboration of mundane materials. The study identified seven sociomaterial practices, defined as movement-driven; studio-making; looking; pedagogic; self-promotion; peer support; and pause. As these practices are subject to ever-changing materialities, they are constantly reassembled. Analysis revealed hidden interiors of underemployment and income generation to be significant factors embedded in the mundane materialities of everyday work, revealing resilience and adaptability as key forms of expertise necessary for the assembling of practices. Further, the arts-based methodology of ‘integrated imagework’ created ways of visually analysing the materially-mediated, socially situated nature of knowing in practice, and demonstrated how relational concepts relating to knowing-in-practice might be better analysed. Findings indicate how the professional education of artists – particularly the way the workplace of the studio is understood – could be re-envisioned to support the fluidity of contemporary artistic practices. The studio itself is a form of knowledge – ever changing – forming and being formed by the practices of artists. Adopting this view of studio-based education would be a radical departure from current studio-based pedagogies in contemporary art education. Further, resilience – the capacity to sustain practices that are emergent and constantly unfolding – becomes a form of expertise central to the professional education of artists.
