Äggläggningspreferenser för honor av väddnätfjäril, Euphydryas aurinia, på området Bälsalvret, Gotland

This study aims to get a better understanding of the oviposition-behaviour of the butterflyMarsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia), in the area Bälsalvret on the Island of Gotland. Thestudy may provide helpful information to aid the conservation of the species in the area andalso provide overall knowledge about the female’s preferences when it comes to choosingmicrohabitat and host plant for their eggs.The analysis of the microhabitat preference for oviposition by the Marsh Fritillary showedthat eggs were predominantly laid on large-sized host plant individuals with a warmermicroclimate; with a preference for the rosette diameter, the length and the width of the leafand the number of Succisa pratensis individuals in the vicinity. This indicates that thefemale’s priority is to place the eggs at the most optimal place for their offspring’s survivaland growth.

Är populationsstorlek av guldsandbi (Andrena marginata) relaterad till förekomst av ängsvädd (Succisa pratensis)? / Is population size of the wild bee Andrena marginata related to the abundance of Succisa pratensis?

Vildbiet guldsandbi (Andrena marginata F.) har en central roll i jordbrukslandkapet som en viktig pollinatör av grödor och vilda växter. I Sverige hotas artens fortlevnad av biotopförlust, habitatfragmentering och födobrist. En av de viktigaste näringskällorna är växten ängsvädd (Succisa pratensis M.) som tidigare var vanligt förekommande men som nu minskar i sin utbredning. Syftet med denna studie var att utreda om populationsstorlekarna av guldsandbi och ängsvädd är relaterade. Guldsandbinas observationsbaserad populationsstorlek uppskattades samt att ängsväddens bestånd inventerades vid fyra lokaler i Övre Klarälvsdalen, i norra Värmland. Binas populationsstorlek uppskattades genom transektinventeringar mellan 30 juli och 11 augusti 2013. Under perioden observerades totalt 286 honor och per observationsdag noterades ett medelvärde på 40,86 (± 8,1 SE, 95% konfidensintervall; n=7) honor. Ängsväddpopulationen uppskattades till totalt 2328 växter från alla fyra områden. Det fanns inget statistiskt samband mellan populationsstorlekarna av ängsvädd och guldsandbin. En jämförelse mellan den för biet förväntade populationsstorleken, baserad på förekomst av näringsväxten, och den observerade populationsstorleken, korrigerad för inventeringsbias, visade bra överensstämmelse vid två av fyra områden (8,4% respektive 5,7% från det teoretiska värdet) och dålig överensstämmelse vid de andra två områdena. Det kan mycket väl vara så att det finns en relation mellan populationerna i Övre Klarälvsdalen, men man måste öka antalet lokaler och ta hänsyn till ytterligare miljöfaktorer som påverkar både bina och växterna för att kunna dra säkrare slutsatser om ett samband. / The wild-bee Andrena marginata has a key function as an important pollinator of crops and wild plants in agriculture landscapes. The species’ persistence is threatened in Sweden due to loss of habitat, fragmentation and food scarcity. One of the most important food sources is the plant Succisa pratensis, which previously was very common but now has declining populations. The purpose of this study was to analyse if there was a relation between the population sizes of A. marginata and S. pratensis. The population size of the bees was estimated and the plant population was surveyed at four sites in the upper valley of the River Klarälven, Värmland. Bee population size was estimated by visual transect surveys conducted between 30 July and 11 August 2013. In this period a total of 286 females was observed, with a mean of 40,86 (± 8,1 SE, 95% confidence interval; n=7) per day. The total population size of S. pratensis from the four sites was estimated to 2328 plants. There was no significant correlation between the population sizes of the bees and the host plant. A comparison between the bee’s predicted theoretical population size, based on the number of host plants, and the observed population size, corrected for observer bias, showed good agreement for two of the sites (within 8,4% and 5,7% of the theoretical value) and poor agreement at the other two sites. There may well be a relation between the bee and plant populations in the upper valley of Klarälven, but one needs to increase the number of sites and take into account additional environmental factors that affect both the bees and the plants to draw a firmer conclusion about such a relationship.

The purpose of the study was to provide further knowledge about if the total amount of solar radiation during the marsh fritillary’s (Euphydryas aurinia) period for larvae development (April 15th – May 15th) and/or flying period (June 1st – June 30th) influenced the average of larvae colonies in the autumn at 12 sites in Dalarna County. Among increased temperatures, global climate models also predict an increased amount of solar radiation and a decrease in cloudiness in northern Europe, as a result of the climate changes. The marsh fritillary has declined rapidly, especially in the Northern of Europe and are in Sweden red-listed as vulnerable (VU). The marsh fritillary is a univoltine species who are dependent on open, sunny, and moist semi-natural grasslands with the hostplant devil’s bit (Succisa pratensis). The data over solar radiation was received from SMHI and had been measured in Borlänge over the last 14 years. The data over the number of larvae colonies was received from Länsstyrelsen Dalarna and had been measured over the last 15 years. The linear regression analysis for both the period of larvae development (p=0,58) and the whole period (p=0,07) indicates that during those periods the solar radiation did not influence the average of larvae colonies. However, the total amount of solar radiation during the flying period (p=0,02) influence the average of larvae colonies during the autumn.

Herbivory is one of most important factors which form meadow ecosystems. These ecological communities have one of the biggest variety of species in Central Europe and their research is important in terms of management of protected species as well. Localities which has a similar importance, is also a meadow ecosystem with occurrence of Succisa pratensis, the only host plant for rare butterfly Euphydryas aurinia. Research of Succisa and its other herbivores can improve a protection of this particular butterfly. Effects of herbivores of Succisa were examined by several experiments. The first one was a field cage experiment. Its aim was to detect what kinds of herbivores (rodents and invertebrates) are involved in herbivory of leaf rosettes of Succisa and what is their impact on the fitness of these plants. The intensity of herbivory of Succisa was measured for over two vegetation seasons on the month bases. In this experiment were also examined effects of surrounding vegetation on the studied plants of Succisa. The second experiment was performed in a garden. Its aim was to clarify the role of herbivores of leaf rosettes, stalks and their interactions on the fitness of Succisa. To Bee or Not to Be : Critical Floral Resources of Wild-Bees

<p>In recent decades, the development of strategies to prevent or slow the loss of biodiversity has become an important task for ecologists. In most terrestrial ecosystems wild-bees play a key role as pollinators of herbs, shrubs and trees. The scope of this thesis was to study 1) pollinator effectiveness of specialist bees vs. generalist flower-visitors, 2) critical floral resources for wild-bees, and 3) methods to estimate the size of wild-bee populations. The wild-bee species <i>Andrena hattorfiana </i>and <i>A. marginata </i>were used as model species. These two species are specialized on pollen from the plant family Dipsacaceae.</p><p>The bee <i>A. hattorfiana </i>was found to be a frequent visitor but a poor pollinator of its preferred food-plant <i>Knautia arvensis</i>. The female bees exert such a strong preference for pollen-producing inflorescences that they likely have deleterious effects on the plant, harvesting valuable pollen that could have been transferred to conspecific stigmas by other flower-visitors. To explore the relationship between wild-bees and their food-plants, the concept of pollen budget was developed. We quantified pollen production in the food-plant population and pollen consumption of wild-bee nests. A survey of the visitation by all flower-visitor taxa indicated that the degree of utilization (the fraction of the total pollen amount that is harvested and utilized by <i>A. hattorfiana</i>) varied from 12% to 80% among <i>K. arvensis</i> populations (N=26). The bee <i>Andrena marginata</i> utilized 44% of the pollen production in a population of <i>Succisa pratensis</i>. The pollen budget suggests that with an average flower-visitor diversity and abundance, 330 individuals of the food-plant <i>K. arvensis </i>are required to sustain a population of 20 <i>A. hattorfiana </i>♀ (the approximate median natural population size). Based on a study of <i>A. hattorfiana</i>, considerable simplifications were proposed for the commonly used mark-recapture design for measuring wild-bee population size. For this species, population size estimated based on mark-recapture data was strongly correlated with the number of observations per survey-walk. The results suggest that large-scale surveys of solitary bee species can be simplified by performing survey-walks.</p><p>The pollen budget and the method proposed for estimating the size of bee populations have the potential to become valuable tools for monitoring and management of wild-bee populations.</p>

Plant Population Dynamics and Conservation in Wooded Hay-Meadows – Effects of Intensified Management

<p>The decrease in number and area of managed hay-meadows over the last century, in combination with the reduction of traditional management, threatens the biodiversity connected to these habitats. I experimentally examined how management intensity affected meadow characteristics and long-term population viability of three vascular plant species in wooded hay-meadows on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. I discovered that intensified management (extra raking and/or extra mowing) reduced the amount of litter and biomass, even in well-managed meadows. </p><p>The effects of intensified management on population growth rate varied among species. Deterministic demographic models revealed that intensified management increased population growth rate in <i>Succisa pratensis</i>. Stochastic modelling confirmed this; all meadows displayed larger projected population sizes 50 years into the future with intensified management. <i>Polygala amarella</i> responded with lower growth rates in raked plots, a consequence of the plant’s morphology, which makes it prone to being pulled out by raking. <i>Hypochoeris maculata</i> had population growth rates close to unity, and showed no response to an increase in management. Examination of the life-history characteristics of <i>Polygala amarella</i> showed that the species’ strategy is aimed at reproduction and fast growth, which is in contrast to the other two species, with their success relying on the survival of older plants. The species-specific responses to management show that several species should be considered when evaluating management practices for conservation of semi-natural grasslands. Furthermore, I suggest that data on stage distributions alone may not be sufficient for identifying threatened populations.</p><p>In a study of artificial dispersal between meadows, I found that establishment was twice as successful for planted plug-plants compared to sown seeds. Both methods may be useful for introducing or augmenting meadow populations, depending on access to seed sources and possibilities to nurse plants.</p><p>An electronic coordinate measurement device for gathering location data to be used in demographic studies was developed. In the field, the device proved to be a simple and reliable method for locating individuals in permanent plots.</p>

Pollination processes - maternal and offspring performance

<p>Pollination is one of the most important factors determining the reproductive success of plants. This thesis examines processes associated to varying pollination, with focus on plant responses. The first aim was to examine the possibility and constraints for short-term evolution of flower size in <i>Raphanus raphanistrum</i>. The results showed that there exists a possibility for pollinator-mediated short-term evolution of flower size in the study species. Flower size was strongly correlated to plant size. Since flower size cannot evolve separately from plant size, this correlation may constitute a constraint to the evolution of flower size. The second aim was to determine how varying pollen load affects later flowering, reproduction and growth of maternal plants. High pollen load treatment resulted in larger or more flowers on late flowers, which may enhance pollen dispersal and reproductive success, while the total seed mass was the same between treatments. The results indicate that the study species <i>R. raphanistrum</i>, <i>Sinapis arvensis</i> and <i>Brassica napus</i> have plastic responses in floral traits according to the present pollination level. The third aim was to determine how varying pollen load affects seed quality and offspring vigor. The results suggest that high pollen load had no positive effects on seed quality or offspring vigor due to pollen competition. Instead, seed mass determined seed quality and offspring vigor in the three study species and low pollen load treatment resulted in highquality offspring due to heavier seeds. The fourth aim was to examine causes and consequences of variation in reproductive success of <i>Succisa pratensis</i> on a regional scale. The results suggest that the most important variables, on a regional scale, for reproductive success were population size and habitat quality. The results showed that seed weight variation might be important when assessing reproductive success. In this study, seed weight variation did not seem to be adaptive.</p>
