Firearm Suicide Among Older Adults: A Sociological AutopsySlater, Greta Yoder 12 August 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Background: Emile Durkheim (1897/1985) theorized that sociological variables (e.g., social, political, economic) are more helpful for understanding suicide than individual or psychological explanations. This study extends the previous sociological work on suicide by testing a theoretical model that includes economic, political, and social variables. The purpose of this study was the development and testing of a predictive model of firearm suicide among the general population and among older adults in the US.

Psychological autopsy of male perpetrator and female victim intimate partner murder-suicide in a rural community in Limpopo ProvinceMuthivhi, Elelwani January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Though it is difficult to determine the prevalence of intimate partner murder-suicide
(IPMS), it does appear that this phenomenon is reported in different parts of the world.
The psychological consequences of this phenomenon to the surviving family members
have also been widely reported. The aim of the study was to conduct a psychological
autopsy (PA) on male perpetrators and female victims of IPMS in a rural community
in Limpopo Province. The research objectives were; 1) To understand the
psychological intent, motives and behaviour of male perpetrators and female victims
in IPMS; 2) to identify role played by male perpetrators and female victims in effecting
their death; 3) To investigate multiple trajectories (that is, psychological, social,
environmental and cultural/historical context) contributed to IPMS; 4) To identify other
factors or events that may have triggered fatal behaviour of both male perpetrators
and female victims of IPMS; 5) To understand circumstances around IPMS; 6) To
develop guidelines to assist in responding to IPMS.
The study was qualitative in nature. In particular, the case study design was used.
Interpretative phenomenology approach was adopted. The study was informed by the
Theory of Planned Behaviour. Purposive sampling used to select cases of intimate
partner murder-suicide. Snowball sampling used to select participants and archival
sampling was used to select archived record. Thematic Content Analysis (that is,
inductive analysis) was used to identify patterns of meaning across the datasets in
order to provide answers to the research objective. The research revealed five major
themes. These themes are psychological profile of perpetrators, psychological profile
of victims, multiple trajectories towards IPMS, possible triggers in IPMS and
circumstance around IPMS.
Research findings suggest that although IPMS came as a total surprise there were
psychological intent, motive, behaviour on the part of male perpetrators and female
victims. The study recommends the need for further PA studies to shed the light on
the psychological intent of male perpetrators and female victims of IPMS. The
psychological intent of male perpetrators and female victims of IPMS heighten the
urgency for policy makers to develop IPMS prevention strategies and policies / National Institute for the Humanities and
Social Science (NIHSS), and South African Humanities

Suicide Attempts and Their Contributing Factors Among African American VeteransBlaise, Gervline 01 January 2019 (has links)
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The rate of suicide attempts among veterans in the United States has increased tremendously since 2001, which has left the Department of Veterans Affairs deeply concerned. The purpose of this study was to examine if there is an association between suicide attempts among African American/Black veterans and mental health support, income level, marital status, education level, and unemployment status. This quantitative study used the socio-ecological model to explain the association of the contributing factors to suicide attempts. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and logistic regression were used to analyze the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality. The publicly available dataset contains 55,271 cases with 6,698 Blacks/African American in the study. The findings of the study show 20% of African American veterans who seek support received it and 80% did not in suicide attempts among African American/ Blacks veterans and mental health support, income level, marital status, education level and unemployment status. The study showed there is a need for greater support for African American veterans through either policy or access to more mental health care. The social change implication is that need to be greater advocacy for support for African Americans who experience suicidal thought seeking support. Providing the support, they need can possibly help save lives.

Suicide is a controversial topic. It causes both bystanders and survivors to feel insecure. An important reason for this is that it is an unnatural death which directly opposes the norms and values of the majority of people. ldiografic research has been undertaken to closely examine the experiences of suicide survivors as they are the real victims who are left to cope with a complex reality after a suicide. The objective of this study was to provide guidelines to effectively manage and render assistance to survivors. From an in depth review of available literature it appeared that troubled emotions, being denounced by bystanders and the inability to proceed with continued qualitative self-actualization are some of the most important problems survivors have to cope with.
A questionnaire, incorporating significant aspects reported in literature, was compiled and given to survivors to complete. From their responses certain facets seemed to be problematic. Among the more problematic aspects were complicated interpersonal relations, the basic need to grieve at their own pace, the preference that bystanders avoid analysing the suicide and possible contributing factors (especially in the presence of survivors) and the recognition that each survivor's grief is personal and unique. A chapter has been devoted to a wide range of therapeutic techniques that can be implemented to facilitate the support given to survivors. The study also describes a case study as well as the progression of sixteen individual therapy sessions. Therapeutic intervention was mainly based on hypnotherapy as a form of relaxation therapy during which the focus is placed on problematic emotions and perceptions which prevent continued qualitative self-actualization. Educational Psychological guidelines along which assistance can be rendered by psychologists, teachers as well as other support services are given. This study not only confirms that the survivors are the actual victims of a suicide, but also that it is possible to assist these people to achieve optimal self-actualization through meaningful intervention. / Psychology of Education / D.
