In Defense of Sundance: Examining the Film Festival’s Place in American Independent Cinema in the Age of Netflix and AmazonSoll, Adam 01 January 2017 (has links)
For more than 30 years, the Sundance Film Festival has served as the preeminent venue for exhibiting and selling American independent films. Since the festival’s inception, however, the distinction between Hollywood and indie films has become increasingly unclear, and Sundance has been accused of selling out to the mainstream. On one hand, the Sundance Institute continues to support and incubate truly independent artists who otherwise may never get their films made; on the other hand, the festival that the institute puts on every year is full of A-list stars, corporate sponsors, and countless other examples of Hollywood elitism. The American independent cinema is as vibrant in 2017 as ever, and new powerful players such as Netflix and Amazon who seemed to enter the scene overnight are now investing a great deal of money in the production and acquisition of Sundance films. Though it may seem counterintuitive, 2017’s edition of the festival proves that the presence of these massive corporations and Hollywood stars fosters and facilitates the creation and celebration of American independent film.

The Sundance Film Festival has transformed from being a fringe festival to a leading showcase for independent cinema. This research shows that studios now descend upon the festival to acquire films for commercial distribution. The Sundance Film Festival seems to currently operate as a marketplace for films rather than an independent festival. This research seeks to examine how Hollywood studios have been able to infiltrate and commodify independent projects from the Sundance Film Festival and what the potential ramifications are for emerging independent filmmakers seeking to have their projects screened at the festival. In other words, have Hollywood studios coopted the Sundance Film Festival and if so, what does this process look like? This research seeks to answer these questions through an analysis of Sundance Film Festival data and interviews with festival informants.

The Birth of the MPDG 2.0: The Potential for the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Trope in Independent FilmSherrill, Brenna Elizabeth 01 April 2016 (has links)
This project chronicles an in-depth character study on the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope in film. The term was coined in 2007 by a film critic about a very specific kind of female character—one who exists “solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” The MPDG has often been written off as nothing more than a stereotype or sexist characterization of a woman, but I argue that the MPDG can be much more than a flat character, as evidenced by the increasingly complex characterization of the MPDG in independent film. Based on case studies of several films, I discuss how the MPDG has grown from a supporting archetype into a well-rounded and multi-dimensional character. Based on a history of female depiction in film, a discussion of the critical interpretations of the MPDG, and these case studies, I argue that the MPDG has the potential to exist as a complex and realistic character rather than just an archetype.

Numerical modeling of river ice processes on the Lower Nelson RiverMalenchak, Jarrod 09 January 2012 (has links)
Water resource infrastructure in cold regions of the world can be significantly impacted by the existence of river ice. Major engineering concerns related to river ice include ice jam flooding, the design and operation of hydropower facilities and other hydraulic structures, water supplies, as well as ecological, environmental, and morphological effects. The use of numerical simulation models has been identified as one of the most efficient means by which river ice processes can be studied and the effects of river ice be evaluated. The continued advancement of these simulation models will help to develop new theories and evaluate potential mitigation alternatives for these ice issues.
In this thesis, a literature review of existing river ice numerical models, of anchor ice formation and modeling studies, and of aufeis formation and modeling studies is conducted. A high level summary of the two-dimensional CRISSP numerical model is presented as well as the developed freeze-up model with a focus specifically on the anchor ice and aufeis growth processes. This model includes development in the detailed heat transfer calculations, an improved surface ice mass exchange model which includes the rapids entrainment process, and an improved dry bed treatment model along with the expanded anchor ice and aufeis growth model. The developed sub-models are tested in an ideal channel setting as somewhat of a model confirmation. A case study of significant anchor ice and aufeis growth on the Nelson River in northern Manitoba, Canada, will be the primary field test case for the anchor ice and aufeis model. A second case study on the same river will be used to evaluate the surface ice components of the model in a field setting. The results from these cases studies will be used to highlight the capabilities and deficiencies in the numerical model and to identify areas of further research and model development.

Analysis of Mesh Strategies for Rapid Source Location in Chemical/Biological AttacksHoward, Patricia Ann 30 April 2004 (has links)
Currently, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories are creating software that is designed to determine the source of a toxic release given sensor readings of the toxin concentration at fixed locations in the building. One of the most important concerns in solving such problems is computation time since even a crude approximation to the source, if found in a timely manner, will give emergency personnel the chance to take appropriate actions to contain the substance. The manner in which the toxin spreads depends on the air flow within the building. Due to the turbulence in the air flow, it is necessary to calculate the flow field on a fine mesh. Unfortunately, using a fine mesh for every calculation in this problem may result in prohibitively long computation times when other features are incorporated into the model. The goal of this thesis is to reduce the computation time required by the software mentioned above by applying two different mesh coarsening strategies after the flow field is computed. The first of these strategies is to use a uniformly coarse mesh and the second is to use our knowledge of the air flow in the building to construct an adaptive mesh. The objective of the latter strategy is to use a fine mesh only in areas where it is absolutely necessary, i.e., in areas where there is a great change in the flow field.
