A decision support system for rapid evaluation and selection of engineered equipment suppliers

Azambuja, Marcelo Menna Barreto 14 October 2009 (has links)
Procurement’s role in engineering and construction is changing. Procurement is evolving into a far more strategic discipline. Major equipment procurement in particular ties up a large proportion of construction cost, has long lead time, and is usually associated with the acquisition of complex or specialized technology. Selection of suppliers is a complex process which requires the evaluation of several suppliers and project targets. This analysis is usually performed manually, it is time consuming, and certain tradeoffs may be overlooked. This research advances state of the art to aid the commercial evaluation and selection of engineered equipment suppliers in the early stages of capital projects. A decision support system was developed in cooperation with several leading engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) and owner firms within industrial construction. The system integrates firms’ market and supplier performance data with a decision aid method to support rapid tradeoff analysis and evaluation of sourcing alternatives in the early stages of capital projects. The tool has been developed in Visual C#, in the form of simple and intuitive forms, with Microsoft Access as the back-end database. A supplier selection module uses the Aspiration Interactive Method (AIM) for providing rapid tradeoff analysis and points how each supplier is ranked in relation to the expected procurement targets. The system also includes a module for schedule analysis of the preferred supplier. Managers first need to assess unique project and supplier’s characteristics to estimate most likely durations. These durations are used to run a PERT analysis and provide initial feedback on probability of equipment delivery success. Therefore, managers are able to check whether their procurement master schedule milestones are feasible or not. Two actual selection cases were used to validate system’s usefulness, completeness, and deployability. According to experienced managers, this tool brings intelligence to the traditional selection process. The ability to quickly generate what-if scenarios and rapidly perform tradeoff analysis based on real data improves the quality of decision making, and supports commercial assessment and recommendation of suppliers in the early phases of capital projects. / text

The interrelationship between suppliers and the Hub organisation within supply networks

Aina, Maria Oluwatoyin January 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents a further study on Dai and Zhang’s (2008) supply networks, which are Cost Saver, Adapter, and Multiple Driven. This concept is centred on hub or focal firm which is the core of the supply networks, built on Miles and Snow’s (2003) strategic typology. In Cost Saver supply network, the hub firm is ‘Defender’; for Adapter supply network it is ‘Prospector’, while in Multiple Driven supply network it is ‘Analyser’. This study explores the interrelationship between the hub and supplier’s configuration and its effect on organisational performance. A comprehensive literature review is carried out with reference to supply chain (SC), supply network (SN) and supply network management (SNM). It stretches to describing Dai and Zhang’s (2008) novel supply networks, its association with Miles and Snow’s theory, the supply network configuration concept, and further expatiates on the need for appropriate supplier configuration for improved performances within the supply networks. The key performance indicators (KPI) adopted for this work, the variables considered in the simulation modelling were evaluated. Usable data were collected from a sample of 630 suppliers, and 15 hub firms. This is accompanied by Hypotheses testing, Case study and Simulation experiments to fulfil the aims and objectives of this research. From the findings of this study, it is confirmed that organisations can be grouped as either the Defender, Prospector, Analyser or Reactor type according to the Miles and Snow typology. The investigation identified that for Multiple Driven, Adapter and Cost Saver supply networks, performances are most improved with an increase in the existence of suppliers of the same typology with the hub organisation within the supply network.

Global Impact of the U.S.-China Trade War in Agricultural Sector

Adom, Enoch January 2021 (has links)
This thesis examined the impact of the U.S-China trade war on the global, U.S, and China?s agricultural exports while considering the competing suppliers? effect using a highly disaggregated HS 6-digit trade flow data in the structural gravity model. The empirical results indicate that the trade war caused about 8.6% and 17% reduction in U.S and China?s agricultural exports, respectively. However, global agricultural export was not negatively impacted during the trade war. Finally, the results also showed that tariff increases by U.S caused an increased in U.S competing suppliers? exports to China. Similarly, China?s retaliatory tariffs caused an increase in China?s competing suppliers? exports to the U.S.

The use of multi-criteria approaches in decisions concerning the selection of sustainable suppliers can be a valuable approach for helping to resolve the complexity of this process. A systematic review of the literature highlighted gaps in the research in this area, such as the lack of a detailed description of multi-criteria methods, as well as a scarcity of sustainability criteria that take into account the three main perspectives (Economic, Environmental, and Social). This work describes the development and real case application of a DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) and ANP (Analytic Network Process) fuzzy modeling technique for the selection of sustainable suppliers. The methodological approach used in the research was quantitative, descriptive, and empirical. The modeling and simulations were performed using MATLAB®. Incorporation of the specificities of the process of selection of sustainable suppliers makes the model a useful tool for use by both businesses and researchers concerned with the issue of sustainability. A systematic review of the published research highlights the main state-of-art methods and criteria used for the selection of green and sustainable suppliers. The model is described in a framework highlighting each step of the application. It was subsequently applied by a major glass packaging company, where the supply chain coordinator agreed to assist in the research. The outputs of the second phase of the model showed that the Economic cluster was most important and interacted with the Environmental cluster, while the Social cluster remained practically inert, without interactions with the other clusters. For the three perspectives, the three most influential criteria were as follows: cost, compliance, and quality (Economic perspective); environmental certifications/ISO 14001, reuse/recovery, and pollution control (Environmental perspective); and stakeholder rights, respect for policies, and encouragement of the development of self-sustainable recycling programs (Social perspective). Finally, a supplier was selected using the framework presented, and the criteria that most influenced the decision were highlighted. The procedure developed here offers a tool to assist businesses searching for sustainable solutions, as well as researchers in the scientific community concerned with the development of knowledge in this area.

Zavedení systému sledování a hodnocení dodavatelů / Implementation of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Suppliers

Fiala, Milan January 2010 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the system of monitoring and evaluation of suppliers at the company RayService, a.s.. The aim is the implementation of an integrated procedural approach within the office work with suppliers. Assortment and quantity of suppliers is now so wide that the existing non-systemic solutions prevent more effective manufacturing and overall development of the company. Everything must be consistent with possible sources of the company, for example IS Helios. The basic condition is availability of data and by this also easy work with them. The main measurement of suppliers at the company RayService is the OTD (on time delivery) of suppliers, which value is 93% today. This work should set up a system of monitoring and evaluation of suppliers at the company so that the growing trend of OTD (from the current 63% to target 93%) can start.
