Flow Through, 2D/3D Nanoplatelet Supports for Packed Beds and Columns

High performance catalyst supports and packing materials are playing an increasing role in many reactions and separations. The dispersion in packed bed reactors and separation columns can be reduced by the development of new packing structures having open and connected pore geometries. The application of new materials in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with sub 5 micron particle sizes are growing. These small particles offer better performance and improved bed and column efficiencies. Recently developed, twinned Alumina Nanosheets (TAN) are 2D/3D nanomaterials that offer promising open geometries for use as column packings and catalysts supports. They have a small particle size (4 um in length, 1 um in width and 0.1 um in thickness) and excellent flow-through capabilities. TANs have recently been used to successfully produce high throughput dynamic membranes. However, their resistance to compaction is unknown and thought to be limited. A technique was developed to reinforce the TAN nanomaterial. Two binder materials were tested as reinforcing agents; SiO2 and AlH6O12P3. The binder-reinforced TANs were then packed into columns. Eleven columns having a 4 cm initial packing length were assembled. Tracer injection studies were performed to investigate the flow behavior and dispersion in these columns. SEM images were also taken to characterize the particles before and after compaction. The best results were obtained using a binding solution containing 7.5 (wt%) SiO2. The binder SiO2 offered a better resistance to compaction than the AlH6O12P3. The Peclet (Pe) number for the columns ranged from 22 to 648. When the content of SiO2 increased from 0 to 7.5 (wt%), the columns showed an increase in the Pe number. When SiO2 increased from 7.5 to 20 (wt%), the columns showed a decrease in the Pe number. However, AlH6O12P3 did not present any relation between the binder content and the Pe number. The results of this work demonstrate that reinforced TANs, are a new type of material that offers a packing with an open pore structure and improved channel connectivity. The new reinforced material offers considerable potential in many applications such as catalysis and separations over conventional materials. If they are used as packing materials in HPLC columns or packed bed reactors, they can contribute to a higher separation efficiency or an enhanced conversion rate or productivity, bringing more advantages and benefits than ordinary packing materials.

O trabalho proposto tem por objetivo a redução e uniformização de esforços em grelhas em função do posicionamento dos apoios, através de técnicas de otimização matemática. Busca-se, pela mudança nas posições inicialmente idealizadas para os apoios, a redistribuição dos esforços em edificações devido à alteração na rigidez relativa dos elementos, de modo a possibilitar maior economia no consumo dos materiais componentes. Objetiva-se ainda, com base na análise de estruturas correntes, verificar a eficiência do procedimento proposto, ainda que consideradas as limitações à livre mudança de posição dos apoios. Com as finalidades descritas, foi desenvolvido um programa de computador que pretende se constituir em uma ferramenta auxiliar ao projetista na fase de concepção da estrutura portante de edifícios. Apesar de direcionada a estruturas de concreto armado, a formulação proposta pode ser adotada para o emprego de outros materiais. / The aim of this work is to reduce and to balance the internal forces on grillages based on the support positions, by the application of optimization techniques. By changing the initial position of the supports, a better redistribution of internal forces on the building due to the changes on the relative rigidity of the elements is achieved, consequently reducing the material consumption. Also, the objective is to verify, by means of several examples, the usefulness of the proposed procedure, even considering the limitations to the free displacements of the supports in the plane of the structure. To achieve these objectives, a software was developed, which intends to constitute an auxiliar tool to designers during the process of idealization of the structure. Initially developed to be applied to reinforced concrete structures, the presented formulation can be adopted to the use of other structural materials.

Two Clamped Pipe Support Connections for Oil and Gas Brownfield Projects

In the oil and gas industry, brownfield projects focus on the modification of or addition to an existing production facility that is fully operational and operating. Welding is typically avoided on these projects. The drilling of holes in existing primary structural elements is also prohibited. Clamped connections are often used when adding additional services in a brownfield project. There are different types of clamped connections utilized when a new structural support must be attached to an existing vertical structural pipe. The short bolt clamped connection is a well-established connection and typically used on offshore projects. The U-bolt clamped connection is an alternative connection, although its use in the offshore oil and gas industry is not as well documented. The main drawback to using the U-bolt clamp connection is the lack of a well researched and vetted design methodology. A preliminary analysis methodology is proposed in this thesis. The material, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of both the short bolt connection and U-bolt connection will also be discussed. The following thesis will end with recommendations for moving forward.

A Systematic Review of Implementation Fidelity Interventions for School-Based Behavior Supports in Special Education Settings

Problem behavior has been increasing in classrooms and has significantly contributed to teacher burnout. Students in special education settings have been found to demonstrate problem behaviors more than their general education peers. Schools have a responsibility to implement evidence-based behavioral support to assist students with their behavioral needs, decrease problem behavior, and increase desired behavior in the classroom. There is a relationship between the level of implementation fidelity and the effectiveness of an intervention. If there are not high levels of fidelity, the results are not expected to mimic what has been found in the research. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify, analyze, and synthesize the current evidence surrounding implementation fidelity interventions for behavioral supports. A systematic method was used to identify relevant studies and 11 studies met the inclusion criteria. Each study was then coded to identify the quality of the evidence and the findings. The data was then reviewed and synthesized according to the research questions. The results indicate that direct implementor training paired with performance feedback is the most researched intervention and has been shown to be effective. Additional research is needed to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of other implementation fidelity interventions.

Describing High School Readiness; Implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports

This study sought to measure the current status and priorities of high school staff around effective behavior supports. The school district studied includes nine comprehensive high schools and one alternative education site. The use of effective behavior supports in the areas of school-wide supports, classroom supports, non-instructional supports, and individual student supports are the foundations for school-wide positive behavior supports, SWPBS, a tiered system of interventions designed to address the behavioral needs of all students within a school building. The study was designed as a mixed methods investigation. An online survey was created from the Effective Behavior Supports, Self-Assessment Scale, EBSSAS, which was administered to a random sample of teachers, school administrators and school counselors. Ten high school principals also participated in direct interviews. The study found that school-wide, classroom and non-instructional supports are partially in place across the district, while individual student supports are rated as not in place. School-wide, classroom and non-instructional supports status varied from correlating priorities in statistically significant ways, with the schools systemically reporting these areas as low priority for improvement. However, in the area of individual student supports, there was no statistical difference between the status and priority rating (not in place, and low, respectively), indicating less confidence in those types of behavioral supports district wide. Implications of these findings include a need for systematic address of individual student support structures, and the usefulness of developing a district-wide manner of coordinating of individual school efforts to meet the needs of students with habitual problem behaviors. Through a district wide support structure, each school should use the data gleaned from the survey responses to develop their own tiered system of support for addressing students with more significant behavioral needs, through means other than suspension.
