Geochemical and molecular studies of the depositional environments of source rocks and their derived oils from the Brazilian marginal basins

Mello, Marcio Rocha January 1988 (has links)
A geochemical survey of Brazilian marginal basins using a wide selection of source rocks and oils, ranging from Lower Cretaceous to Tertiary in age, has been undertaken. The aims were to assess the palaeoenvironment of deposition of the source rocks, to correlate reservoired oils with their putative source rocks and to understand the effects of maturity on the composition and absolute concentrations of biological markers. The geochemical analyses included evaluation of organic ca~bon contents, Rock-Eval pyrolysis data, vitrinite reflectance measurements, determination of carbon isotope ratios, elemental and visual kerogen analysis, and molecular studies involving liquid and gas chromatography, qualitative and quantitative biological marker investigations using GC-MS, metastable GC-MS .and GC-MS/MS for saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, and UV/vis spectrophotometry, probe MS and HPLC for metalloporphyrins. The metastable ion GC-MS data were evaluated using principal component analysis. Integration of the results with geological and paleontological data provides the recognition and differentiation of seven depositional regimes, namely lacustrine freshwater, lacustrine saline water, marine evaporitic, marine carbonate, marine deltaic with carbonate influence, open marine highly anoxic with a predominance of calcareous mUdstone lithology, and open marine anoxic, with predominance of siliciclastic lithology. The analyses of the oils reveal significant differences between groups which enable a correlation with putative source rocks laid down in five of the above depositional regimes: lacustrine freshwater; lacustrine saline water; marine evaporitic: marine carbonate and marine deltaic with carbonate influence. The quantitative approach used to determine the effect of thermal maturity on the composition and concentration of the biological markers shows that care must be taken in their use as maturity indicators, since source input and mineral matrix might play an important role. On the other hand, it also shows that the concentrations decrease considerably between the onset of petroleum generation and its peak. Thus, care must also be exercised when using biological marker concentration in palaeoenvironmental assessment The metalloporphyrins in a selection of organic rich sediments have also been examined. The results suggest that their distributions can be a useful auxiliary tool in the characterisation of depositional environments of petroleum source rocks. Finally, a combined geochemical and micropalaeontological study of Cenomanian to Maastrichtian pelitic sediments from the continental margin extends the occurrence of the recognised Cenomanian-Turonian and santonian "oceanic anoxic events". As an extension, the presence of such events in the Coniacian is reported. In contrast, the Campanian-Maastrichtian appears to be a time interval when deposition under oxygenated conditions produced sediments with low organic carbon contents and poor hydrocarbon source potential. In summary, biological marker characteristics of organicrich sediments can distinguish different types of depositional environments, assessment of from analysis allow oil-source rock correlations, and the the depositional environment of the source rocks only of the oils. Thus, this thesis provides a framework of biological marker characteristics which can be compared with samples from other parts of the world.

The psychometric properties of an employee attitude survey for a South African Automotive Manufacturing Organization

Van der Linde, Marzanne 29 April 2009 (has links)
The objective of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of an employee attitude survey as developed by an Automotive Manufacturing Organization. The employee attitude survey consist of 55 items and was completed by a total of 306 employees employed at this specific organization. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed where only one factor loading resulted out of an anticipated thirteen. The inter-correlations were empirically investigated and indicated that all the items under a specific dimension did have a lot in common with one another. An anti-image inter-correlation was performed. All of the items indicated a satisfying measure of sampling adequacy (MSA) values at .595. The overall reliability of the employee attitude survey was satisfactory. These results suggested that the employee attitude survey is a handy tool for the goal the organization wants to use it for, but it does not differentiate between the thirteen different dimensions of attitude as hoped for. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Correlates of Boater Knowledge and Views Regarding the Florida Manatee and Manatee Related Issues

Futerfas, Judith 13 November 2003 (has links)
Scientists are extremely concerned that the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, does not have a sufficient population number nor reproductive rate to ensure long-term species viability. This research was done to investigate aspects of boater behavior in an effort to determine measures that might decrease boat-manatee collisions and help researchers plan intervention strategies in related areas. Initially, boat data was collected over a period of several months at a Miami waterway. Next, a detailed phone survey of boat owners was conducted. Although most boaters were found noncompliant with the speed zone, several questions from the survey showed that most valued manatees and almost half wanted them to remain listed as endangered. This is very encouraging as boater support for the manatee is possibly one of the most important indicators of manatee chances for survival. Suggestions included requiring mandatory boating classes and informing boaters of faster routes to their destinations.

The Perception and Use of Narrative Writing in the First-Year Composition Course

Larimore, Aubrey 01 December 2022 (has links)
This study employed a mixed-methods strategy to assess how narrative writing is perceived and utilized in first-year composition (FYC) courses at American 4-year institutions. The history of narrative writing instruction is reviewed in an examination of the literature of rhetoric and composition scholars, as well as those who study narrative theory. The survey tool was created for instructors and course/program designers to provide an overview of their FYC curricula, methodologies, and perceptions related to narrative writing. Findings indicate that FYC instructors and course designers perceive narrative writing as an introductory writing tool, much like the progymnasmata of antiquity, wherein narrative writing is used as scaffolding for more academic writing tasks. Though rarely assigned beyond the first project of the semester, when narrative is assigned, the learning objectives are difficult to meaningfully articulate beyond the general goals of the FYC course. The implications for future research are plentiful, as this study was necessarily limited in scope by its exploratory goals, so there are many opportunities to expand and build upon the work of this study.

The Severe Weather Knowledge Of College Students In The State Of Mississippi

Nussbaum, David Joseph 10 May 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify how knowledgeable the students of Mississippi are of severe weather. The state of Mississippi is ranked second in the nation with the total number of deaths per state per year. The state also ranks among the top 10 of all states with number of tornadoes per state and cost of damage per state. Considering the facts mentioned above, a study was designed to discover if the students were taught severe weather awareness while they progressed through their twelve years of elementary and secondary schooling. A survey was created through the research of the Mississippi Department of Education, and Jim Belles, National Weather Service Memphis Office Warning Coordination Meteorologist. The results of the survey were then put to statistical tests to find out the significance of the survey questions.
