Are Parents Treading Water When it Comes to Awareness of Children’s Drowning Risk? The Impact of Children’s Swimming Lessons on Parents’ Perceptions of Children’s Drowning Risk, Swimming Ability, and Supervision Needs Around Outdoor Water

Sandomierski, Megan 28 October 2011 (has links)
Having the same parents repeatedly complete questionnaires over time, the current community based study investigated beliefs relevant to supervision, drowning risk, and water safety for children aged two through five enrolled in swim lessons. Results revealed that many parents value swimming lessons for young children and view supervision as an important prevention approach. Water safety beliefs and accuracy in judging children’s swim abilities improved over lessons, but time in lessons was related to endorsing poorer supervision of children near water. Having experienced a “close call” for drowning was found to make parents more aware of drowning risk and the importance of close supervision. Results highlight the need for parent education that targets beliefs about water safety and supervision during lessons, and also suggest that a close call for drowning may act as a “teachable moment” for parents and be an appropriate time to implement such interventions.

Repečka, Justinas 10 September 2013 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Subject: influence of physical therapy and swimming lessons to static trunk muscle endurance, balance and posture for 7 - 9 years old boys. Determine which method improves efficiency to static trunk muscle endurance, balance and posture for boys with irregular posture. Research hypothesis: it is considered, that static trunk muscle endurance, balance and posture develops better for boys with both physical therapy and swimming lessons' compared to only physical therapy. Research results: balance, static trunk muscle endurance and posture improved statistically significant (p<0,05) for both groups - I and II. Otherwise, there was no significant difference (p>0,05) compared both groups. Conclusions: 1. Balance, static trunk muscle endurance and posture statistically significant improved by using physical therapy. 2. Title: Czech and French concept of swimming lessons in school. Objectives: The objective of the study is to provide basic information about the concepts and management of swimming training at elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, universities and clubs in France. At the same time, use available resources to outline the functioning of swimming lessons in the Czech Republic and compare both of these systems. The obtained information about the Czech and French concept of swimming lessons in schools and clubs was subsequently compared. Results: Based on a comparison of the concepts of both countries, we found that these systems differ significantly. Although under the auspices of the same body, in France the Ministry of Education has much greater competence and the result is a very well-organized concept of swimming instruction. In comparison with the Czech Republic, it then appears that no institution managing the function is properly performed and significant shortcomings are found in the organization of swimming lessons within compulsory school attendance. Goals:The goal of the thesis is to teach young children (6-9 years old) breaststroke swimming style by usage a dolphin wave. Methods:The thesis is mainly descriptive multi-case study. We used standardized and even non- standardized methods. The teaching method had been applied to a group of six children (6-9 years old) and analyzed by the diploma thesis author after its application. In the same time we teach another group of six children by standard breatststroke didactics method, so we were able to compare both methods. Results:The application of dolphin wave method into didactic of breaststroke swimming style has advantages and even disadvantages. The advantage is mainly freedom of movement, so children can use their creativity and sence to find the optimal movement. On the other hand the freedom is also disadvantage, since it can cause a little chaos at the beginning of the training. The successfulness of both methods was same. In both groups four children learnt the breaststroke and two did not. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
