Resumo: A presente pesquisa apresenta um estudo a respeito da vida e de algumas obras de um relevante personagem do contexto tardo-antigo itálico, o orador neoplatônico Quinto Aurélio Símaco Eusébio. Integrante do senado romano e do círculo de poder imperial, este autor colocou sua pena e seus conhecimentos de retórica a favor da elaboração de documentos que articulavam teorias políticas e valores morais para legitimar as ações e, até mesmo, a necessidade da figura de um governante soberano. Paralelamente à construção deste discurso, o senador buscou garantir a sua família e ao grupo ao qual pertencia a proeminência necessária para participar de uma elite social. Com o intuito de compreendermos as formulações que o levaram a alcançar seus objetivos e a estabelecer uma ampla rede de relações, destacamos duas obras basilares para os exames realizados nesta dissertação: Primeiro elogio a Valentiniano Augusto, o Maior (369 d.C.); e Segundo elogio a Valentiniano Augusto, o Maior (370). Nestes panegíricos, encontramos vestígios de teorias políticas norteadoras de um período que clamava por constantes reelaborações para que o Império Romano permanecesse eterno, como requeriam as tradições e, obviamente, os grupos dominantes daquela sociedade.
