Syncopation : unifying music theory and perception

Song, Chunyang January 2014 (has links)
Syncopation is a fundamental feature of rhythm in music. However, the relationship between theory and perception is currently not well understood. This thesis is concerned with characterising this relationship and identifying areas where the theory is incomplete. We start with a review of relevant musicological background and theory. Next, we use psychophysical data to characterise the perception of syncopation for simple rhythms. We then analyse the predictions of current theory using this data and identify strengths and weaknesses in the theory. We then introduce further psychophysical data which characterises the perception of syncopation for simple rhythms at different tempi. This leads to revised theory and a new model of syncopation that is tempo-dependent.

The Entrainment in two rhythms of the song: an experimental observation about sung speech

Santos, Cássio Augusto Alves de Andrade 02 July 2012 (has links)
This paper presents a study about the Brazilian Portuguese placed in the context of the song. Using as a base the entrainment process between pairs of four pairs of singers, we designed a factorial experiment with two factors, called Rhythm of the Song and Entrainment Observation Point. With the factor Rhythm of the Song, we observe whether the speech into the context of singing bossa-nova is more difficult to achieve when compared to the same inserted in the context of rock. With the factor Entrainment Observation Point we seek to observe whether individuals have the same ability to sync at the beginning and end of sentences. Both calculations were performed by measuring the lag, time difference between entrainment observation points of the singers of the same pair, i.e., separated the lag by songs (factor Rhythm of the Song), and separated by Entrainment Observation Point (factor Entrainment Observation Point). In parallel, and to complement the acousticphonetic study, we observed the development of accentual metric-songs comparing the linguistic and musical accents of the songs used. The set of results obtained by statistical calculation and accentual-metric observations indicates that the singers have it easier to perform the requested task - to sing as synchronous as possible - in the context in which the rhythm accompaniment of songs was not syncopated, so ease as indicated to sync at the end of sentences.

Urban Rhythms of Washington DC

Moshier, Zachary Stephen 11 July 2016 (has links)
How can architecture serve as a catalyst to strengthen a transitioning neighborhood without displacing or replacing the local community? Cities bear the weight of continual change. Across the United States, urban communities wrestle the boundary between the desires of gentrification and concerns for maintaining cultural identity. These ethos are expressed in both the social and physical fabric of the neighborhood. What buildings do we save? What goes away? Can something new introduce value yet inherently belong to the neighborhood? While these questions hold relevance in any city, each city holds a unique DNA. Why does Washington DC feel different than Chicago, New York, or Philadelphia? How does the architecture manifest this genetic code? I began to seek an architectural program where I could explore these questions. As a trained jazz drummer, I desired to create a place that could become a laboratory for jazz music and performance, while simultaneously serving the artist, student, patron and neighborhood. The streets of DC have a rhythm, a genetic code. How can this code be studied and interpreted through the lens of jazz music? Architecture is rhythmic. Users become improvisational dialogue within the form of architecture. My thesis developed these questions and concepts to create a physical home for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. (currently headquartered in Washington DC). The chosen site is located in the city's transitioning Greater U Street neighborhood. / Master of Architecture

Mário de Andrade e a síncopa do Brasil / -

Menezes, Enrique Valarelli 06 April 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is divided in two parts. In the first one I make a transcription of an unpublished manuscript by Mário de Andrade titled \"Syncopation\", belonging to the series \"Author\'s Manuscripts\" from the Mário de Andrade Archives, now located at the Institute of Brazilian Studies - IEB/USP. This manuscript consists in a collection of various annotations about the subject, made in several periods and gathered in the personal files of the poet and musicologist. To the transcription of this collection I added analyses, a contextualization of the annotations, and articulations with the published biography of the author. In the second part, I elaborate my thesis about syncopation in Brazil based on a development of the ideas and methodology presented in Mário de Andrade\'s manuscript, and seek to demonstrate it with various analyses of the rhythmic structure of Brazilian popular music, in particular of syncopation.

Analysis and Categorization of Selected Musical Elements within Forty-three Solo Jazz Vocal "Standards" with Pedagogical Application to Repertoire Selection and the Teaching of Jazz Concepts in the Jazz Voice Lesson

Buchholz, Timothy C. 03 May 2010 (has links)
While the concept of teaching jazz style to vocal students is not a new one, previous materials written on the subject have not addressed two important aspects of this process. One is the concept of selecting jazz vocal solo repertoire that is both musically and vocally purposeful and appropriate for the student. The other is how to teach stylistic concepts that will apply to both current repertoire as well as songs the student will learn in the future. This doctoral essay provides both a categorized list of solo jazz vocal repertoire as well as strategies for introducing stylistic elements of jazz into the private-lesson setting. Through a systematic analysis of jazz vocal standards, a list of repertoire selections was categorized by rhythmic style, melodic range, melodic harmony, melodic rhythm, and harmonic content. In addition, the stylistic need to add syncopations to swing songs with non-syncopated melodies was addressed. Suggestions are included on how to implement this categorized list in the music selection process for students. Furthermore, this essay provides jazz voice teachers with strategies to efficiently incorporate important aspects of jazz styles such as rhythmic feel, song form, improvisation, and harmony into the lesson setting. By showing connections between these concepts and the literature that is being taught, students can become more competent and confident within the vocal and stylistic elements of the jazz idiom.
