They are frequently seen over the thighs, buttocks and breasts as a consequence of progressive and sustained stretching of the skin. Striae distensae are classified as striae rubra in the earliest stage and striae alba in the latest stage. The treatment of striae distensae has included many therapeutic modalities. However, successful treatment has been disappointing for striae alba. The present study describes the use of microamperage stimulation as an alternative for striae alba improvement. This method induces a local inflammatory process, which stimulates cell proliferation and collagen synthesis. Local inflammation may be accompanied by systemic response. There are significant relationships among inflammation, oxidative stress and serum level of lipids. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the systemic inflammatory effects of microamperage stimulation on striae alba treatment and examine whether this method induced oxidative stress or changes in lipid profile. Thirty-two women between ages of 20 to 30, with striae alba present on the buttocks were selected for the study. All subjects received treatment once a week over a period of ten weeks. Plasma concentrations of CRP, TNF-a, NO, TBARS, oxidized LDL-C, HDL-C, total cholesterol, CAT and uric acid were analyzed. Biochemical analysis of blood samples showed that microamperage stimulation induced no systemic inflammatory process, substantial decrease of oxidative stress and improvement of lipid profile. Microamperage stimulation seems to be a promising method of treatment for striae alba.

Beltrão, Sônia Maria da Rosa January 2010 (has links)

This cross-sectional study originally evaluates the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms in SLE patients by using the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Questionnaire (QMPA). SLE diagnosis was established according to the 1997 American College of Rheumatology criteria. Eight or more affirmative answers in the QMPA identified individuals with psychiatric morbidity. The prevalence of QMPA alterations in SLE was compared with that of community controls. The occurrence of psychiatric abnormalities in SLE was plotted to disease activity (measured by the SLEDAI), history of psychosis and/or seizures, age of begin of disease, duration of disease, education level, and familial income available to the patient. Seventy-two SLE patients were studied, 69 (93%) females, The mean age was 46 years, The community controls sample included 2,384 individuals (55% females, mean age 42 years,) The prevalence of QMPA changes was of 89% in SLE patients and 13% in community controls (P < 0. 001, non-adjusted). Of the 64 SLE patients with altered QMPA, 93,7% had common mental disturbs, mostly anxiety and somatization. There was no co-relation of psychiatric morbidity with active disease (P = 0. 46; rs = 0. 09), or history of psychosis and/or seizures (P = 1. 0). Psychiatric abnormalities also did not co-relate to age of begin of disease (rs= - 0. 16) or duration of disease (rs= - 0. 11).There was an association of psychiatric morbidity with low education level (P = 0. 02), but not with familial income available to the patient. (P = 0. 24). In conclusion, the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity measured by the QMPA was significantly higher in SLE patients than community controls. In the SLE population, changes of QMPA did not co-relate to active disease, history of psychosis and/or seizures, age of begin of disease, duration of disease or familial income available to the patient, but they did associate with low education level.
