Specific heat measurements using the A.C. technique on the chevrel phase superconductor Pb(_1-x)Gd(_x)Mo(_6)S(_8) in high magnetic fields

Ali, Salamat January 1996 (has links)
We have developed a probe to measure specific heat of Gd-doped PbMo(_6)S(_8), at low temperatures in high magnetic fields up to 12.5 T using a heat pulse method and an a.c. technique. Comparison between these heat capacity measurements and transport measurements provides critical complimentary information about fundamental thermodynamic properties and granularity m superconductors. We have used a tiny, robust, highly sensitive and broadly field independent Cemox thermometer (CX-1030), eliminating the use of bulky gas thermometry or capacitance thermometry. The diameter of the probe is 20 min which facilitates use in our 17 T high field magnet and in free-standing cryostats. Experiments include accurate measurement of temperature oscillations of 10(^-6)K. The measurements and analysis of the data were made fully computer controlled. Measurements on Cu and NbTi demonstrate we achieved an accuracy of ±0.2 K in temperature and a typical accuracy of -10% m the specific heat values quoted. Gd-doped Lead Chevrel phase material Pb(_1-x)Gd(_x)Mo(_6)S(_8) has been fabricated in a controlled environment using simple sintering methods and a Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) operating at pressures up to 2000 atmospheres. Cp has been measured and the properties of the materials including B(_c2)(T) have been determined. HIP processing improves the materials, increasing Tc ~ 15 K and B(_c2)(0) ~ 60 T. These values are amongst the best reported values for the Chevrel phase materials to date. I am personally responsible for taking all the data and its analysis. The modification of the probe were also undertaken by me. The fabrication of the samples was not my work

Rotational hysteresis in single domain ferromagnetic particle

Lu, Chi-Lang 10 July 2000 (has links)
A ferromagnetic particle with single domain, at some kinds of applied field (at some angle or strangth), the particle's free energy would be two state model. The rate of barrier crossing could be solve by Fokker-Planck equation .And use master equation to find out the Total rate between two potential well. In this thysis, we use the upper method to simulate particle's magnetic moment under time varying magnetic field at fixed angle or fixed magnetic applied rotate the particle. In numerical method, we use the back Euler method to prevent the divergence of the calculation.

Membrane-based nanocalorimetry for low temperature studies with high resolution and absolute accuracy

Tagliati, Stella January 2011 (has links)
A differential, membrane-based nanocalorimeter has been designed and constructed for thermal studies of mesoscopic samples at low temperatures. The calorimeter is intended for sample masses from mg to sub-μg and a broad temperature range from above room temperature down to the sub-K region. It allows concurrent use of ac steady state and relaxation methods. Effort was spent to achieve good absolute accuracy to enable investigations of the electronic contribution to the heat capacity of superconductors. The calorimeter consists of a pair of cells, each of which is a stack of heaters and thermometer in the center of a silicon nitride membrane, in total giving a background heat capacity less than 100 nJ/K at 300 K, decreasing to 10 pJ/K at 1 K. The device has several distinctive features: i) The resistive thermometer, made of a GeAu alloy, displays a high sensitivity, dlnR/dlnT ≈ −1 over the entire temperature range. ii) The sample is placed in direct contact with the thermometer, which is allowed to self-heat. The thermometer can thus be operated at high dc current to increase the resolution. iii) Data are acquired with a set of eight synchronized lock-in amplifiers measuring dc, 1st and 2nd harmonic signals of heaters and thermometer. iv) Absolute accuracy is achieved via a novel variable-frequency fixed-phase technique in which the measurement frequency is automatically adjusted during ac-calorimetry measurements to account for the temperature variation of the sample specific heat and the device thermal conductance. The properties of the empty cell and the effect of the thermal link between sample and cell were analytically studied. Practical expressions for describing the frequency dependence of heat capacity, thermal conductance, and temperature oscillation amplitude of the system were formulated. Comparisons with measurements and numerical simulations show excellent agreement. Calibration procedures are simple, but care should be taken to minimize thermal radiation effects. The experimental setup is operated with self-regulation of heater powers and thermometer bias, including compensation to zero the differential dc signal. As a result its high resolution and compact format, the calorimeter is well suited for studies of phase transitions and phase diagrams as well as electronic specific heat. The performance of the device is demonstrated by a study of the superconducting state of a small lead crystal. / At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 5: Accepted.

Experimental and numerical-computational analysis of the influence of shot peening on crack propagation.

Rosalie, Beugre Ouronon Marie 20 February 2019 (has links)
Shot peening is a manufacturing process widely used in the mechanical, automotive, marine, aeronautical and other metallurgical industries. The main purpose is to induce residual compression stresses to improve fatigue life. The modeling and simulation of the process are very difficult as they involve the consideration of many and complex aspects. This work proposes a three-dimensional modelling method using the finite element method for the numerical simulation of this process as well as its influence on crack propagation, considering little studied effects such as softening of the material due to the increase in temperature in the part during impacts , the elastic-plastic behavior of the shot and the roughness of the treated part in the crack parameters. The proposed modelling approach to simulate the shot peening process includes: (i) explicit dynamic analysis, (ii) three-dimensional modeling, (iii) calculation of the real velocity of the shot, (iv) contact model with static and dynamic friction coefficients between the contact areas, (v) the Johnson-Cook constitutive model for target material behavior, (vi) a multilinear elasto-plastic behavior for the shot, (vii) consideration of real coverage in a given area of the peened surface, (viii) consideration of temperature increase in the material during the process and (ix) relaxation of residual stresses due to this rise in temperature. Numerical-computational simulations to investigate the influence of the shot peening process on phenomena, such as fatigue and crack propagation, required a new approach for the incorporation of residual stress in a finite element model. In addition, several quasi-static and dynamic tests were carried out to determine the parameters of the constitutive Johnson-Cook model for AISI 5160 steel. To assess the proposed methodologies, the residual stresses were introduced and evaluated in an automotive parabolic spring, with the residual stresses being evaluated by the X-ray diffraction technique, the intensity and coverage of the shot peening process for the spring were evaluated with magnifying glass and roughness gauge. Also, fatigue tests available in the literature, carried out on types of CT specimens, were used. The numerical modeling of the shot peening process developed in this work can successfully predict the residual stress profiles, with values close to those obtained experimentally. The numerical investigation of the effect of the process in the fatigue life and fracture of the pieces proved its influence in the parameters of crack propagation in the regions affected by the process, causing a wide increase of the fatigue life, and confirmed the relaxation of the residual stresses due to the cycles loading according to experimental observations in the literature.
