This thesis is to study the microstructure and its related surface properties of CrxNy¡BDLC and TiO2 films prepared by different plasma energy processes such as physical vapor deposition (PVD) and plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) processes. In the first chapter of this thesis, the different Cr-based coatings (Cr, Cr2N and CrN) were prepared by PVD process with lower plasma energy condition (less than 100 eV). The surface energy properties of these Cr-based coating were studied and the relationship between the surface properties and adhesion forces with respect to epoxy molding compound (EMC) were also investigated. It is found that the PVD-Cr2N coating has the largest contact angle of water and the lowest polar components and surface energy. The low surface energy is attributed to the high density of surface reactive sites and the formation of N-H bonds and O-H bonds on the film surface that act as the effective adsorption sites for carbon. The second chapter focuses on the modification of the electrical and mechanical properties of DLC films with high plasma energy (5¡ã45 keV) , PIII post-treatment. It is found that using high ion energy and a short treating time can modify the sp3 content, the nano-hardness and the Young¡¦s modulus of the DLC films. The formation mechanisms of sp3 C-C bonds in the implanted DLC film involve the reaction among compressive stress field, bonds breakage and recombination process induced by hydrogen and carbon ion. The third chapter deals with the structure and photocatalytic properties of nitrogen-doped TiO2 film prepared by PVD process with lower plasma energy condition (less than 100 eV). The TiO2-xNx films are indirect transition type and optical band gap energy is various with increasing nitrogen flow rate. The TiO2-xNx film with high crystallinity and porous surface morphology shows the best degradation rate of methylene blue solution.

The thesis discusses how to utilize Sol-gel method to prepare nano-sized TiO2 films of photoelectrodes and the their use in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells. The main goal is the study on the production of TiO2 photoelectrodes. When making nano-sized TiO2 films of photoelectrodes, we have to first produce TiO2 sol via the Sol-gel method optical thin films are then made by spin coating. After its spin coating, we study the crystalline phase and morphology of nano-sized TiO2 films of photoelectrodes in terms of two ways: Supercritical drying and oven drying. Among the Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells that are made with different drying methods, owing to higher porosity and surface area, the nano-sized TiO2 films of photoelectrodes made by supercritical drying adsorb more dye molecules and are thus more efficient.

Microwave dielectric resonators (DRs) are being widely used in microwave telecommunication devices owing to their excellent characteristics of suitable dielectric constant, good temperature stability, and low dielectric loss. In this study, the crystalline phase and the microwave dielectric properties of the (1-x)Al2O3 - xTiO2 (x=0.08, 0.12, 0.16) compositions with 2wt%, 4wt%, 6wt%, and 8wt% MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MCAS) glass addition have been investigated. By combining the material Al2O3 with negative temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (£nf = -55 ppm/¢J) and the material TiO2 with positive £nf value (£nf = +450 ppm/¢J), it is desired to produce the ceramics with £nf ~0 ppm/¢J. The MCAS is used as liquid-phase sintering aid to lower down the sintering temperature. In the MCAS-doped (1-x)Al2O3 - xTiO2 system, the Al2TiO5 phase starts to appear at about 1250¢J, and then the crystalline intensity of Al2TiO5 phase increases with the increase of sintering temperatures and MCAS glass content, until the temperatures that TiO2 is consumed. As the sintering temperature increases, the maximum dielectric constants and Q¡Ñf values can be obtained at 1250¢J, and the £nf values shift from positive to negative. The optimum £nf value of ¡V0.6 ppm/¢J exists in the 88mol%Al2O3 - 12mol%TiO2 composition with 2wt% MCAS addition and sintering temperature of 1300¢J. The MCAS content, TiO2 content, and sintering temperature will result in the variation of microwave dielectric properties. In this study, MCAS-doped (1-x)Al2O3 - xTiO2 system exhibits the microwave dielectric properties of¡G £`r=7~9.5, Q¡Ñf=6500~11000, and £nf = -60 to +40ppm/¢J. By adjusting the MCAS content, TiO2 content, and sintering temperatures, ceramics with good microwave properties can be obtained in the MCAS-doped (1-x)Al2O3 - xTiO2 system.

In the past few years, the synthesis and fabrication of inorganic nanostructures with manipulated morphology and size have attracted considerable attention due to their fundamental importance and potential wide-ranging applications. Silver nanowires are particularly interesting to study because bulk silver has the highest electric conductivity among all metals. A number of chemical approaches have been explored to synthesize 1D silver nanowires. We demonstrate a simple method to synthesize silver wires by thermal reduction of aqueous AgNO3 droplet with catalytic anatase TiO2 nanoparticles which were spin-coated on ITO or glass. Our simple method can be also applied to generate CuO with donut-shaped microstructure by using ITO conducting glass as matrix. We have found that the size and reproducibility are well-controllable. A single phase of CuO donut-shaped microstructure with outer diameters ranging from ∼ 13 to 17 £gm and inner diameters ranging from ∼ 1.4 to 3.3 £gm was obtained. The composition of CuO microdonut was confirmed by thin-film XRD and XPS analyses.

The energy requirements of our planet will continue to grow with increasing world population and the modernization of currently underdeveloped countries. This will force us to search for environmental friendly alternative energy resources. Solar energy by far provides the largest of all renewable energy resources with an average power of 120 000 TW irradiated from the sun which can be exploited through solar electricity, solar fuel, and biomass. Nanostructured materials have been the subject of extensive research as the building block for construction of solar energy conversion devices for the past decades. The nanostructured materials sometimes have peculiar electrical and optical properties that are often shape and size dependent and are not expected in the bulk phase. Recent research has focused on new strategies to control nanostructured morphologies and compositions of semiconductor materials to optimize their solar conversion efficiency. In this dissertation, we discuss the synthesis and characterizations of one dimensional nanostructured TiO₂ based materials and their solar energy conversion applications. We have developed a solvothermal synthesis method for growing densely packed, vertical, single crystalline TiO₂ rutile nanowire arrays with unprecedented small feature sizes of 5 nm and lengths up to 4.4 [mu]m. Because of TiO₂'s large band gap, the working spectrum of TiO₂ is limited to the ultra violet region with photons shorter than 420 nm. We demonstrate that the active spectrum of TiO₂ can be shifted to ~ 520 nm with incorporation of N via nitridation of TiO₂ nanowires in NH₃ flow. In addition, we demonstrate a synergistic effect involving hydrogenation and nitridation cotreatment of TiO₂ nanowires that further redshift the active spectrum of TiO₂ to 570 nm. The Ta and N co-incorporated TiO₂ nanowires were also prepared and showed significant enhancement in photoelectrochemical performance compared to mono-incorporation of Ta or N. This enhancement is due to fewer recombination centers from charge compensation effects and suppression of the formation of an amorphous layer on the nanowires during the nitridation process. Finally, we have developed hydrothermal synthesis of single crystalline TiO₂ nanoplatelet arrays on virtually all substrates and demonstrated their applications in water photo-oxidation and dye sensitized solar cells. / text

Στην παρούσα πτυχιακή παρασκευάστηκαν νανοσύνθετα υλικά TiO290-HALL10 και TiO280-HALL20 ώστε να εφαρµοστούν στην φωτοκαταλυτική αποδόµηση αερίων ρύπων. Τα νανοσύνθετα παρασκευάστηκαν µε τη µέθοδο διασποράς-επικάθισης του TiO2 και στους επιµήκεις κρυστάλλους του Αλλουσίτη.Η κρυσταλλική µορφή του TiO2 που συντέθηκε ήταν ο ανατάσης. Εφαρµόστηκαν οι παρακάτω τεχνικές:περιθλασιµετρία ακτίνων X(XRD), υπέρυθρη φασµατοσκοπία µετασχηµατισµού κατά Fourier(ATR-FTIR), ηλεκτρονική µικροσκοπία σάρωσης(SEM),προσδιορισµός µεγέθους και κατανοµής πόρων καθώς και ειδικής επιφάνειας. Tα νανοσύνθετα υλικά λόγω των ιδιοτήτων τους φαίνεται να είναι αποτελεσµατικά στην εφαρµογή τους στους αέριους ρύπους και έτσι µπορούν να χρησιµοποιηθούν και στις οργανικές πτητικές ενώσεις. / In this study were prepared nanocomposites TiO290-HALL10 and TiO280-HALL20 order to be applied in several environmental applications. The samples were prepared by dispersing TiO2 nanoparticles on the microfabers of alloysite. The crystal form of TiO2 that was synthesized was anatase. The nanocomposites were characterized using the following techniques:X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), attenuated total reflection using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and N2 surface analysis by BET. The nanocomposites due to their characteristics showing to be effective in decomposing air pollutants and can be used in volatile organic compounds.

Suspended titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that synergistically aid in disinfection when irradiated with UV light. To exploit the benefits of TiO2 photocatalysis without having to remove them, TiO2 was deposited onto 3M Company’s nanostructured thin film (NSTF). •OH production by suspended and TiO2-NSTF was determined by para-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA), a •OH probe compound. Both techniques of introducing TiO2 to the samples produced equivalent •OH without forming bromate, a regulated byproduct in drinking water at all UV and TiO2 levels. Formation of bromate by ozone in brackish water and seawater were used to compare the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation between the disinfection methods. Additionally, monitoring bromate, typically performed by ion chromatography, is complicated by chloride and other anions present in brackish water or seawater. Thus, a spectrophotometric method to measure bromate in saline systems is introduced.

heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation of dinitrogen to nitrate, NO3 and/or nitrite, no2 using peroxy species of titanium (IV) in aqueous suspensions has been investigated. The photocatalysts used were titanium peroxide and Degussa p25 TiO2 pretreated with H2O2. Organic solar cells are cheaper and much easier to fabricate than the conventional inorganic solar cells, but they suffer from low efficiencies due to low carrier mobilities in organic films. In this study Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) and Buckminster Fullerene (C60) based Schottky diodes were fabricated on ITO coated glass substrates to study their performance and a study of the effect of thickness on the cell parameters of CuPc Schottky diodes was made. Also, TiO2 based devices were studied to see the effect of TiO2 layer on the cell parameters. The J-V curves were analyzed for series resistance, diode ideality factor and reverse saturation current density. The devices were also characterized by SEM and XRD measurements.
