Procedures and Safety Strategies for Divers on Underwater Objects Detection

Yen, Tuan-Wu 11 September 2012 (has links)
Search for drowned human body by divers is a highly technical dependent, difficult and dangerous work. How to improve this kind of underwater rescue work, under the considerations of the safety of divers and the effectiveness in detection of the target within a limited period of time, is a major subject for fire fighters. For the time being, a normal search and rescue procedure basically includes visual observation of the bank area and surficial water area. In addition, divers are sometimes sent out to complement the search procedure by either visual observation or tactile. A much more efficient way to conduct this kind of recovery activity is to incorporate the state of art of the underwater acoustics technique, such as scanning sonar, into the operation procedures. This investigation was focused on the application of scanning sonar and image analysis techniques as well as seafloor object identification skills for the detection of drowned human body. In addition, safety of divers under water and their activities could be improved and monitored. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and towed operated vehicle (TOV) should be incorporated into the normal search procedure for the purpose of improving target identification in the future. Under this circumstance, both target searching rate and divers¡¦ safety could be effectively improved or guaranteed. The proposed procedure which incorporated both acoustical (i.e., scanning sonar) and optical (i.e., ROV or TOV) apparatus are expected to simplify and improve the underwater target search and identification activities and will allow fire fighters a more professional and safety way in conducting drowned human body recovery activities.

From spoken word to the discourse of the academy: reading the sources for the teachings of the Besht

Moseson, Chaim E. 14 February 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is concerned with the sources for the teachings attributed to the Besht (Israel Ba’al Shem Tov, d.1760), the purported founder of the Hasidic movement. Works of Hasidic literature preserve many teachings attributed to the Besht but since he wrote none of these himself, the reliability of the oral transmission of his words and of their written record has repeatedly been called into question. After surveying previous critical scholarship on the sources for these teachings and arguing that very basic questions about the nature of these sources and their reliability as historical records remain unanswered, this dissertation presents the first systematic investigation of the earliest of these sources, assesses their various textual problems and historical connection to the Besht, and, finally, offers a number of methodological strategies for evaluating and interpreting them. The sources that are the focus of the investigation include the several letters and documents that have been attributed to the Besht directly, as well as the numerous teachings quoted in his name in the writings of his disciples. Employing historical and philological analyses, this study traces the textual history of all of these sources and their various, often conflicting, versions in manuscript and print, and offers a fresh assessment of their connection to the Besht. In the course of the investigation important aspects of the complex origins of Hasidic literature are reconstructed and it is shown, for example, that a vast corpus hitherto attributed to the Besht’s disciple Dov Ber, the Maggid of Mezritsh (d.1772), is, in fact, the product of a prolonged, and largely anonymous, collective effort. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the historical and methodological consequences of the analyses. It is argued that the scope of the oral transmission of the Besht’s teachings was relatively limited and that it was their dissemination in written form that had a decisive historical impact. Following a discussion of the applicability of criteria of authenticity to the case of the teachings quoted in the name of the Besht, a number of methodological strategies for interpreting them are described and a future program of research is proposed. / 2028-08-31T00:00:00Z

El secreto empresarial en la industria del fitomejoramiento

Rabasa Martínez, Ignacio 29 January 2021 (has links)

Desgagnés, Julie 12 1900 (has links)
Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic cancer with a five-year survival rate of only 30-40% in patients diagnosed with high-grade invasive disease (TOV). This contrasts with the 95% five-year survival in patients diagnosed with the low malignant potential (LMP)disease. Previously, we have identified differential expression of Cks1 between serous LMP and TOV tumors through gene expression analysis using Affymetrix HuFL DNA microarrays. Overexpression of this cell cycle regulator was observed in the TOV tumors, but not in the LMP samples. To study its role on the invasive potential of ovarian cancer cell lines, Cks1 was depleted in two tumoral invasive ovarian cancer cell lines established in our laboratory, TOV112D and TOV1946, using an inducible shRNA strategy. Then, tetracycline-inducible stable clones were derived and studied further. Comparisons between clones and controls have shown no Cks1-dependent effect on cellular growth, neither in migration capacity nor spheroid formation. Thus, we can conclude that Cks1 does not play a crucial role in the tested parameters for cancer progression, but further experiments could elucidate the biological differences observed between the two kinds of tumors studied.

Tabletop Extreme-Ultraviolet Source Using High Harmonic Generation for Polarization Sensitive Imaging

Buckway, Taylor Jordan 12 May 2022 (has links)
We are developing a tabletop extreme-ultraviolet source using high harmonic generation at Brigham Young University. The thesis goes over the theory of high harmonic generation using the three-step model. This tabletop source was designed for probing magnetic domains of iron nanoparticles. We present optimization of the 42 eV and 52 eV harmonics through phase matching. Phase matching consists of tuning the intensity of the IR beam and pressure of the gas medium. The target gas medium used for this thesis is argon. The 42 eV harmonic was optimized to 8.2 billion photons per second. This was used with a 1500 mm focal-length lens, 15 mm medium length, laser power of 1.53 Watts, and a pressure of 12 Torr of argon gas. The 52 eV harmonic was optimized to 1.5 billion photons per second with a 1500 mm focal-length lens, 20 mm medium length, laser power of 3.29 W, and 14.9 Torr of argon gas. There are two designs for selection of harmonics: 1) a tunable design consisting of a toroidal mirror and flat diffraction grating and 2) a set of normal-incidence extreme-ultraviolet mirrors designed for 42 or 52 eV photons. Magnetic imaging uses x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to obtain magnetic contrast and use it to visualize magnetic nanosystems. Therefore, the high harmonic source also needs to generate circularly polarized light. Generating circularly polarized high harmonics is possible with a bichromatic beam. This is achieved using an apparatus called the MAZEL-TOV designed by Oren Cohen’s group at Technion University in Israel. The MAZEL-TOV consists of a BBO crystal for second harmonic generation, a pair of pulse delay compensation plates, and a quarter-wave plate. These optics are placed inline with the laser beam. We have successfully optimized the circularly polarized extreme-ultraviolet harmonics with the MAZEL-TOV. A spectrometer was made to calibrate the harmonics in the MAZEL-TOV spectrum. The tabletop source was then used to demonstrated coherent diffraction imaging of two pinholes.

The Isaiah Passages in the Book of Mormon: A Non-Aligned Text

Ellertson, Carol F. 01 January 2001 (has links) (PDF)
Since the advent of the Dead Sea Scrolls, four biblical textual scholars have emerged at the forefront of the dialogue concerning textual evolution. They are: Frank Moore Cross, Emanuel Tov, Shemaryahu Talmon and Eugene Ulrich. Though there is some overlap in their hypotheses, each scholar has put forth a framework of biblical textual development in light of these new discoveries. If a new biblical text were discovered today, how would each scholar approach it? This thesis evaluates each scholars' views and concludes that Emanuel Tov's criteria for judging a newly discovered text is the most thorough and explanatory. Tov's views provide for texts that appear to have evolved away from other known biblical texts. His descriptive categories for discovered texts recognize the possibility that a discovered text could be unaligned with any text known thus far to the scholarly world. He terms this category "non- aligned." The other scholars do not provide for such a category. They assume that all texts are closely related in "families," or "literary editions" and that all texts evolved in relative close proximity to one other with either occasional or frequent contact.Book of Mormon Isaiah was removed from the biblical textual evolutionary process that was talking place in Palestine ca. 600 B.C. Where does it fit into this process as put forth by scholars? Is it a text closely related to any of the families described by these four scholars? This thesis evaluates the textual variants between Book of Mormon Isaiah and Isaiah in the Septuagint, the Masoretic Text, and Qumran's Isaiah scrolls. Of the 433 verses of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon, 216 (50%) contain 370 variants. 119 of these are related to italicized words in the King James Version. 76 variants appear to agree with the Septuagint, 28 agree with Isaiah at Qumran, 52 are supported by the Masoretic Text, and 150 variants are non-aligned. These facts are accurately predicted and explained by Emanuel Tov's theories. Of the four, he is the only scholar that conceives of the idea of a text not closely aligned with any other extant text. Book of Mormon Isaiah contains approximately 1/3 of the chapters in the Masoretic text. Using Tov's theories, when 433 verses contain 370 variants, this fits the criteria of an "independent" or "non-aligned text." Book of Mormon Isaiah is a proof text for his theories.
