A comparison between the concept of western hypnosis and African trance

Hearne, Claire 17 November 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / The nature of hypnosis and trance is investigated in the context of Western psychology, and traditional African healing practises. The historical development, definitions of nature of hypnosis and trance, and theoretical background of both these phenomena are described. Similarities and differences between Western hypnosis and African trance are described. Western hypnosis and African trance are found to be embedded in the context which provides their meaning. The similarities and differences between the African healing trance induction process and the Western context of hypnotherapy are discussed in terms of the ecosystemic theories. The content and characteristics of hypnosis in these two spheres are not seen as important as is the context and process of these phenomena. It is found that the expected characteristics of hypnosis in Western psychotherapy, and traditional African trance states, and the similarities and differences between them, are not absolute realities, but rather culturally shaped experiences which people come to expect.

A rave festival, seven days in Turkey : A journal of the trance movement and how the collective identity builds up through the festival

Christ-Lind, Hanna January 2006 (has links)

EEG responses to shamanic drumming. Does suggestion of trance state mediate the strength of frequency components?

Konopacki, Mateusz January 2016 (has links)
One of the techniques used to induce trance state in shamanic ceremonies is monotonous drumming. According to previous EEG research, certain patterns of drumming cause an increase in power of alpha and theta frequencies of the listener. Present study aimed to determine, if suggestion to experience trance state could increase the relative alpha and theta amplitude and the intensity of experienced state. A group of twenty-four subjects participated in the study. Suggestion to experience trance state decreased alpha frequency power during the drumming condition. No other significant effects of suggestion or drumming were found.

Abed Chehab, Alice January 2019 (has links)

A psychological study of shamanic trance states in South African shamanism.

Lambrecht, Ingo January 1998 (has links)
Submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Philosophy of Arts in Psychology. / This thesis involved a psychological study of the shamanic trance states of South African shamans. Literature on shamanism has marginalized or neglected Africa. The aim of this study was to establish the main elements unique to South African shamanic trance states, as well as to establish common factors with other traditions of shamanism. The developmental aspect of the South African trance states was investigated in order to highlight and explore possible pathological or transcendental aspects of such trance states.(Abbreviation abstract) / Andrew Chakane 2020
