Preparing pre-service mathematics teachers to teach in multilingual classrooms : a community of practice perspective.

Essien, Anthony Anietie 01 October 2013 (has links)
This study takes a particular look at mathematics teacher education communities of practice (CoPs) in order to provide rich descriptions of the CoPs and make claims about its relation/in relation to teacher preparation and particularly the preparation of preservice teachers for teaching mathematics in multilingual classrooms. The three dimensions of communities of practice proposed by Wenger (mutual engagement, shared repertoire and joint enterprise) were used in conjunction with Mortimer and Scott’s notion of meaning making as a dialogic process as a theoretical lens to gain an entry into the nature of communities of practice in pre-service mathematics teacher education classrooms. Data was collected through pre-observation interviews of 12 teacher educators at four Universities in one Province in South Africa in Phase One of the study. A methodological approach based on Wenger’s CoP theory and Mortimer and Scott’s dialogic process was developed and used to analyse classroom observation videos of four of these teacher educators’ classroom communities of practice in two universities in Phase Two of the study. Using the privileged practices in the CoPs as points of departure and how these practices shaped and were shaped by other dynamics in the CoPs, the findings emerging from the study indicate that within the multiply layers of teacher education, there is an overarching emphasis given to the acquisition of mathematical content. Nevertheless, the communicative approaches and patterns of discourse used by the different teacher educators opened up different possibilities as far as preparing preservice teachers for teaching (in multilingual classrooms) is concerned. Wenger’s community of practice theory has found applications in different spheres of life and in different organisational and educational settings. Its use to understand and describe mathematics pre-service classrooms is, however, still largely unexplored. A theoretical contribution that this study makes lies in the extension of Wenger’s CoP theory to include dialogic processes. A methodological contribution lies in the development of an organisational language (based on Wenger’s three dimensions of CoP) to characterise pre-service teacher education classrooms.

Silva, Daniela Ferreira da 14 September 2016 (has links)
This study discusses the inclusion of geoscience in the educational practice of six teacher educators, who have in common graduate education in Teaching and History of Earth Sciences at Instituto de Geociências, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, and the work in disciplines of teaching methodologies and or in supervised internship courses. We consider teacher educators all the professionals involved in the teaching of future teachers, such as: teachers of educational and methodological disciplines, supervised internships, and specific disciplines. The main objective of this research is to understand how geosciences are disseminating in the practice of these educators. Therefore, we assume that training in this graduate program, professional experiences and personal experiences promote the development and or the reinterpretation of interdisciplinary practices that have some historical, epistemological and theoretical-methodological foundations of geosciences linked to Environmental Education, Science, Technology and Society (STS) approach and History of Science. To understand how practices, methodologies and concepts of this field of knowledge intertwine in teaching, we resort to thematic oral history through semi-structured interviews, seeking to uncover what paths have been taken so that geosciences were incorporated and legitimized in the development of teaching. In order to build a more fruitful analysis, making the interlocution clearer, throughout the chapters, the theoretical discussions have been permeated by the speeches of educators, that is, the analysis of the interviews was conducted along with the literature discussion on the topics delimited, so as to make the dialogue between theory and practice constant. Thus first we present the issues that permeate the professional development of teachers and their multiple dimensions, emphasizing that, as a continuum, teacher education is constituted through critical reflection on practice and through the permanent (re)construction of personal identity. Consequently, these educational practices confer uniqueness to the teaching work, since they are delineated by various experiences, uncertainties and reflections. In a second step, these foundations are further discussed, bringing to light the constitution of different interdisciplinary practices conceived through some principles of epistemology of geosciences, of geoscience practices with an emphasis on field work; of the use of languages and representations; and of the establishment of museums and collections. Finally, we emphasize the importance of interdisciplinarity as an articulation tool for the teaching and learning process, stressing that interdisciplinary actions are constituted in the practice and experience of the subjects. In this context, interdisciplinary practices show themselves in different ways and numerous possibilities of teaching practice, sometimes integrating content and sometimes integrating the curriculum and the construction of knowledge. Such conceptions are consistent with the discourse of the educators, since the practices are established through different areas of knowledge, such as Environmental Education, the STS discussion, the History of Science, Geosciences, the area of expertise of each teacher etc.

A formação como trabalho - análise da atividade do tuteur-formador de professores de francês como língua estrangeira / Teacher development as a work - analysis of the activity of the tuteur/educator of French as a foreign language teachers

Simone Maria Dantas Longhi 19 September 2017 (has links)
This research was developed in the context of the Extracurricular French Courses at FFLCHUSP, in which one of the teacher development actions is the tutorat, a accompaniment modality that consists of the monitoring of beginning teachers by more experienced teachers, the tuteurs. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the work of the tuteurs, teachers that become teacher educators in the context of the Extracurricular French Courses at FFLCHUSP. Its theoretical framework is based, on one hand, on Socio-Discursive Interactionism (BRONCKART 1999/2009, 2006/2009, 2008; MACHADO, 2009, BULEA, 2010) and, on the other, on contributions of the Work Sciences, more specifically, on the Clinic of Activity (CLOT, 1999/2000, 2001, 2008) and the Ergonomics of Activity (FAÏTA ET VIEIRA, 2003; FAÏTA, 2004; SAUJAT, 2004; AMIGUES, 2004, 2009). These theoretical lines share Vygotskian assumptions, (VYGOTSKI, 1929/2014, 1930/1985, 1934/1997), providing subsidies for the study of the tuteurs activity as work. In order to find solutions for the difficulties experienced by the tuteurs during the monitoring of beginning teachers, a group of tuteurs interested in discussing the challenges of the their work was formed in 2014. Based on the interests of the tuteurs, we conducted interviews in simple and cross self-confrontation, as well as a final meeting with all the participants, in which the tuteurs were able to put themselves in the perspective of observers of their own activity. After the intervention, the interviews and meetings were transcribed and analyzed according to Socio-Discursive Interactionisms theoretical and methodological framework (BRONCKART, 2008, 2010, 2013), and also categories of gestures (LEPLAT, 2013) and specific categories for the analysis of texts focused on work, known as action figures (BULEA, 2010, 2016). The meetings and interviews revealed that the lack of work instructions was one of the tuteurs\' main problems. The results of our analysis showed that, to overcome that difficulty, the tuteurs underpin their counseling activity on the knowledge of the teachers métier, although they differentiate counseling and teaching, pointing out that there are specific skills that must be developed for the work of the tuteur/teacher educator. In addition, our analysis showed how the tuteurs focus their activities on the transmission of several dimensions of the teachers métier, in order to provide the tutoré with a range of possible genre gestures (AMIGUES, 2004) for the different situations that the beginning teacher may face in the course of the work.

Perceptions of school faculty, university faculty, and teacher candidates participating in a professional development school partnership.

Hopkins-Malchow, Janice Marie. January 2009 (has links)
This study investigated, gathered, and organized information not previously available regarding the perceptions of school faculty (SF), teacher candidates (TC), and university faculty (UF) relating to the effectiveness of the PDS partnership between Grant University (GU) and Adam Elementary School (AES). Although participants in the PDS perceived the partnership was successful, data had not been collected from the participants. Data were not available to assess whether or not the list of responsibilities for SF and UF presented in the AES/GU PDS Agreement were being completed. A mixed-methods survey-methodology with the use of questionnaires provided a framework for the study. Semi-structured interviews and narrative responses substantiated and supported discoveries in data. Cross-sectional surveys collected data from differing segments of the population at a specific time showing the perceptions of those segments of the population. The collection of data is from three population groups (school faculty, teacher candidates, university faculty) during two years. The study describes the perceptions, both positive and negative of teacher candidates, university faculty, and school faculty. / Department of Educational Leadership

A needs analysis for the implementation of a complementary course in mathematics education for teachers of mathematics in Namibia: a case study

Ilukena, Alex Mbonabi January 2009 (has links)
After the introduction of the Basic Education Teacher Diploma (BETD) in Namibia, a number of studies were conducted on how teachers, lecturers, stakeholders and the Namibian public perceived the BETD program and its implementation. However, very few studies focussed specifically on mathematics subject content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in the BETD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the need for a complementary course in mathematics education to address the lack of mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge in the Namibian BETD. The study involved five mathematics school teachers, two mathematics college lecturers in the Kavango educational region and a professor of mathematics education at the University of Namibia. These participants were purposefully selected because of their knowledge and experiences with various aspects of the BETD program. The motivation for conducting this study was to gain a better understanding of some of the issues that have been raised about the BETD program, particularly the perceived inadequacy of mathematical subject content and methodology since the inception of the program. The study adopts a qualitative approach in reporting participants’ reflections. The views of the focal educators and documents such as syllabi and course outlines were the main source of data. The findings indicate that despite the training that the three BETD mathematics graduates in this study received, the level of mathematics taught in a complementary course, such as an ACE, would clearly better equip mathematics teachers to teach proficiently and facilitate access to institutions of higher learning such as universities. The results of the study revealed that there was a need for the implementation of a complementary course to the BETD in mathematics education for teachers of mathematics in Namibia. This study also provided valuable insights into what such a course could look like.

A picture's worth a thousand words: a case study of grade 10 English language educators teaching visual literacy

Leask-Smith, Lyn Ann January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this research was to better understand teacher's beliefs about visual literacy and to explore how their beliefs influence their teaching practice. In order to investigate this, a case study was conducted that comprised of lesson observations and semi-structured interviews with two secondary school English home language educators. The backdrop to the research was the implementation of the new national curriculum for grade 10. The participants, though well educated and experienced teachers, felt their training had been inadequate in the area of teaching visual literacy and although they acknowledged the importance of visual literacy, it seemed to have a fairly low priority in their actual teaching practice. In particular, very little attention was given to the production of multimodal texts by learners. The reason for this low priority may be related to the requirements of the formal assessment programme as well as limited lesson time in which to cover an extensive curriculum. The research findings would seem to suggest a need for in-service training in this area as well as access to suitable learning support materials and teacher resources.
