The forgotten tool : a socio-historical analysis of the development and use of mechanical molecular models in chemistry and allied disciplines

Francoeur, Eric. January 1998 (has links)
This thesis offers a detailed socio-historical exploration of the practice of molecular modelling in chemistry and allied disciplines. This exploration leads to observations and conclusions that are of relevance to the sociology of science in general and to the issue of representation in scientific practice, in particular. After a general introduction in chapter one, chapter two offers a review of the science studies' literature relevant to the topic, namely the literature on representation and on experimental practices in the sciences. The lack of sources dealing with the issue of physical modelling is highlighted. Chapter three, through specific cases studies, presents the argument that the circulation of structural concepts and accounts in chemistry has been historically associated with the circulation not only of graphical representations, but also of physical models. Implications of this argument for a semiotically-centred view of scientific practice are discussed. Chapter 4 discusses the role of models as a research tool. Through various historical cases, it shows how physical models have been central in the process of defining, exploring and intervening on the domain of molecular-structures as accessed through laboratory manipulations. The work of molecular modelling is presented in particular as the experimental articulation of structural constraints within clearly defined research settings. Chapters five and six analyse the development of three specific modelling systems from the late 1930s to the mid-1960s. These chapters show these developments as contingent processes based on the involvement of elite researchers and both private and public institutions. It shows in particular how these modelling systems were made relevant across individual research sites by providing not only a technical solution to the problem of assembling model structures, but also by incorporating specific structural constraints. Finally, it is argued that these systems are one of

An empirical study of degree of listening comprehension in learners of English as a foreign language with audiotaped and videotaped input

Ihsan, Diemroh January 1984 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness of videotape recorders (VTR) as a medium of instruction in teaching English listening comprehension as compared to audiotape recorders (ATR).The material used for this study was a videotaped 16 minute talk by an American native speaker. Based on the talk, 32 questions were prepared for the listening comprehension tests. The subjects chosen for this study were 18 students from the Intensive English Institute (IEI), Ball State University, enrolled in the Summer Quarter, 1984. They were divided into two groups, A and B.Based on the evaluation and interpretation of the results of the tests by means of the statistical tests, t-test and ANOVA, it was discovered that the students' listening comprehension was slightly greater with the VTR than the ATR.This study suggests that the VTR will help EFL/ESL students' listening comprehension in addition to the ATR alone in a language laboratory.

Text and accompanying slide series for a course of instruction in mechanical drawing at the junior high school level : a creative project / Title on accompanying material: Language of drawing : an introduction to basic mechanical drawing / Title of text: Introduction to mechanical drawing.

Hadfield, Paul E. January 1971 (has links)
This project has led to the development of a text "An Introduction to Mechanical Drawing" and slide series for this text, which will be used in combination to teach mechanical drawing to Junior High School students and a basic approach to drawing for any interested person. The text is written in a teachable sequence. That is, each chapter develops a particular segment of mechanical drawing, which is added to and built upon by each successive chapter.A preliminary stage setting to mechanical drawing for the students is developed through the use of the slide series.

Computer-based remediation in Cape Senior Certificate standard grade mathematics

Elgie, Brian James January 1991 (has links)
This dissertation begins by reviewing the difficulties experienced in teaching mathematics to pupiis, weak in mathematics, in the Senior Secondary phase of Cape Education Department schools. The possible use of computer-aided instruction (CAl) in improving the examination performance of such pupils is considered. A suitable CAl software program, viz. the SERGO system, is identified and its operation is described in detail. The researcher investigates, both from a quantitative and a qualitative aspect, the change in mathematics examination performance of a number of weak in mathematics pupils, as a result of receiving an extended period of extra tuition on the SERGO system. It needs to be noted that these pupils are passing candidates in other subjects, and have above average intelligence. They are not slow learners. The researcher identifies three categories of pupils who are weak in mathematics. Different programmes of remediation are recommended for each category. The possible use of the SERGO system as a stand-alone instrument of remediation , for pupils working in pairs, and the possible use by H.G. pupils in combined H.G./S.G. classes are also investigated.

Audio-Visual Aids and the Teaching of Texas State Government

Baker, Riley Ellis January 1948 (has links)
Audio-visual aids can help to cause the student to realize that "government" is an animate, ever-changing thing that affects him in many ways. The purpose of this paper is to suggest ways in which government courses may be given life.

The Effectiveness of Relationship Films in Changing Attitudes of Adult Homemakers

Hall, Avis Moran January 1950 (has links)
It is the purpose of this study to determine whether the use of sound films alone, shown to homemakers in adult homemaking classes, is effective in improving attitudes relative to family and social relationships, civic responsibility, and the use of leisure time.

Using interactive television in the in-service education and training of guidance teachers

Maake, Matsobane Joshua 31 January 2007 (has links)
This study is focused on how technology is employed as educational support media in distance education. The aim is to establish the availability and accessibility of interac¬tive television for both guidance teachers and students in rural, remote and previously disadvantaged communities. Interactive television could be used to support the primary modes of education, namely, contact education on campus or at remote sites, paper-¬based distance education and Web-based distance education for in-service education and training of guidance teachers. The TELETUKS schools project is cursorily pre¬sented as an example of a technology-enhanced delivery system to facilitate interactive television learning. The ITV has the potential to be cost-effective, saving on travelling costs and reaching for increased numbers of upgrading guidance teachers per unit time. A comprehensive interactive television model for in-service training of the guidance teacher in the Northern Province is presented. / Thesis (PhD (Educational Guidance and Counselling))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted
