Analysing technical tertiary training and education requirements for the South African explosives industry / Willie Fourie Verster

Verster, Willie Fourie January 2014 (has links)
South Africa is one of the largest producers of explosives in the world. The production of explosives is driven by the mines’ need for explosives to produce the commodities needed by the economy. South Africa used to offer a diploma in explosives technology, but this qualification was discontinued in 1996. Currently some qualifications in explosives management are being presented, but these qualifications do not fulfil the industry's need for technical education in explosives. The South African explosives industry reports that they need technical education in explosives. Because the explosives industry is relatively small in terms of personnel numbers, tertiary educational institutions are hesitant to establish a degree in explosives engineering or a similar qualification. The aim of the research conducted was to try and quantify this need as well as to give guidance to the structure of the explosives engineering qualifications. During the study representatives from all the role-players in the industry were interviewed. Further information was gathered by means of a questionnaire. This data were combined and analysed and it was found that there is a definite need for a diploma in explosives engineering, an undergraduate degree in explosives engineering as well as post graduate qualifications in this discipline. The research has shown that there is a good possibility that these qualifications would be sustainable considering the growth in the South African explosives industry, as well as the growth in the African mining market. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Tech Prep: To Investigate and Develop an Analysis of Two On-Site Visits

Birchfield, Sandra C. 01 May 1994 (has links) (PDF)
There was no educational plan that served as a comprehensive model to more adequately prepare students for economic success as defined by securing and retaining employment in existing and prospective business settings. Tech Prep Professionals were asked questions on existing programs to investigate and develop an analysis of two on-site visits. The research questions were as follows: (1) What components comprised other Tech Prep Programs? (2) What differences and commonalties existed in the Tech Prep programs? (3) What impact, if any, did the demographics of the region have on the existing Tech Prep programs? (4) What procedures were followed in setting up Technical Preparation programs? (5) What commitments have been made toward the program by education, society, business/industry and government? Information was gathered both by requesting information from successful Technical Preparation programs already in existence as defined by Hull and Parnell, and by visiting institutions that have established programs. A week long visit was made to each of two sites and personal interviews were conducted. The combination of literature and on-site visits brought together important components that have helped in the analysis of a Tech Prep program. These components coupled with the people (people bank Appendix E) behind the scenes gave insight into the success of Tech Prep programs. This research provided postsecondary institutions with an analysis of Tech Prep that helped coordinate a program of study, as well as job preparation, for students of Southwest Virginia. Each component listed in Appendix D was very important to the total program. However there were three that seemed essential for the success of the program. Marketing, parent involvement, and a commitment from business/industry, would be an excellent foundation upon which to build any program.

Evaluation of Transfer of Technical Training: A Prototype

Stubbs, Carol A. (Carol Ann) 08 1900 (has links)
The degree of transfer of technical training to workplace behavior was evaluated using a Solomon Four-Group experimental design. Additionally, all groups received retrospective pretests. Subjects were 103 technicians in an electronics company. Supervisors rated technicians on behaviorally anchored rating scales which were developed and labeled as behavior description scales for simplicity. Analysis of variance revealed no effect for training nor pretest. A training-pretest interaction effect was revealed for one dimension (Communication with Support Groups). Analysis of covariance revealed main effects for pretesting for two dimensions (Problem Solving and Communication with Supervisor) and a pretest-training interaction-for one dimension (Problem Solving). Except for one dimension, t tests revealed no significant differences between traditional pretests and retrospective pretests, thus negating a hypothesized response shift bias.

Motta, Marcelo Meirelles da January 2009 (has links)
Researches about technical practice of adult tennis players have not been performed in the same proportion that increases their dedication to this sport modality. The present thesis has as central aim to describe and explore the frequency of Preparation Strokes (PS) and Definition Strokes (DS) execution, during the technical training of adult tennis players, associated to the related sport federation into three categories embracing the same age group: "Free , Adults A and Adults B". More specifically, the study looked forward to verify potential significant statistical differences in the execution frequency of PS and DS, according controlled variables: Categories (Free, Adults A and Adults B) and Ranking (Ranked 1º to 15º - R1 ; Ranked 16º to 33º - R2 ) offering to the tennis community information regarding practices of the higher level tennis players, out of this universe. In order to do that, the "Inventário do Treino Técnico-desportivo do Tenista (ITTT-12; Balbinotti, 2003)", was applied. The ITTT-12 is a test that rates the answers in a Likert scale form of 5 points (1 - hardly frequent to 5 - highest frequent) verifying in nominal values, the dimension most practiced by the tennis players. The ITTT-12 surveyed a sample of 99 adult male tennis players. All participants compete in events promoted by the Gaucha Tennis Federation (Rio Grande do Sul State Tennis Federation, Brazil). The research appointed that the most frequent practiced dimension was the PS. Evaluating the frequency of player's practice training with controlled variables, it is perceived that PS, in all analysis, are most practiced, except when comparing tennis players R1 and R2 , of "Adults B" category. R2 tennis players of this category performed most frequently DS. The results of this study suggest the importance of PS practice on searching higher technical level for the participants of these categories. We recommend that additional studies are directed with participants of other categories in order to deep the knowledge about tennis technical training.

Meta-Analysis of the Effectiveness of Computer-Assisted Instruction in Technical Education and Training

Yaakub, Mohammad Naim 09 July 1998 (has links)
The overall effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) for higher order learning in technical education and training was determined through the meta-analysis approach. Studies that had investigated the effectiveness of CAI as compared to traditional instruction were selected from major databases in the civilian and military sectors. The selection criteria were: (a) instruction was in the area of technical education and training, (b) a comparison was made between a group of students that received computer-assisted instruction with another group that was taught in the traditional manner, (c) student learning in both groups was measured in some form, and (d) quantitative results on criterion measures were provided. The common comparison metric chosen to indicate the effect size was the standardized mean difference. Additionally, a determination was made of the difference in CAI effectiveness between studies categorized into: (a) CAI type -- intelligent CAI and ordinary CAI; (b) nature of CAI treatment -- replacement and supplemental; (c) subject assignment -- random groups, intact groups, and assignments other than the preceding two groups; (d) educational level -- secondary / postsecondary, university, and adult military training; and (e) setting -- civilian and military. The overall effect size of CAI was found to be 0.35, implying that the average student in the traditional class would have improved from the 50th percentile to the 64th percentile if the student had been provided with CAI. Intelligent CAI was found to be significantly more effective than ordinary CAI. / Ph. D.

Examination of Faculty Expectations of Technical College Administrators as an Important Factor in High Performing Environments

Dupuis, Phyllis A. 20 December 2009 (has links)
Popular thought supports the notion that faculty expectations of technical college administrators appear to be linked to the success or failure of an institution at accomplishing its mission. These expectations provide the basis for the development of relationships that foster the growth of technical training and thus the growth of a skilled workforce. Faculty members in technical colleges are responsible for training individuals to meet business and industry needs. Administrators are responsible for efficiently achieving the institution's mission of workforce development. Unknown faculty expectations may inhibit the ability of administrators to achieve the institution's mission in an efficient manner. This project is an exploratory qualitative study of faculty expectations of technical college administrators in a high performing environment. The result of this study increases the administrators' understanding of expectations associated with their role and facilitates the development of an effective workforce training agenda. Five major themes related to expectations of administrator roles emerged from participant interviews: student-, community-, faculty-, administrative-, and attributes-oriented roles as necessary for achieving outcomes in a high performing technical college environment. Study findings reveal major differences in faculty expectations and institutional expectations of the role of technical college administrators. The necessity for reconciliation of these differences in expectations is examined as it relates to the success of high performing institutions. Potential contributions of this study to post-secondary technical and community colleges are numerous. Through the use of Mintzberg's Taxonomy of Managerial Roles (Mintzberg, 1973) as a conceptual framework and actual accounts of eleven technical viii college faculty members, this study seeks to contribute to the training/development of technical and community college administrators, provide a summary of faculty expectations of technical college administrators, identify professional development opportunities to assist faculty in clarification of administrator roles, provide insight into the behaviors deemed necessary for campus administrators to be considered successful, increase faculty job satisfaction and improve morale by providing an opportunity for communication and feedback, and provide insight to current and future leadership development programs and processes.

The authors examine the approach to legislation to tax incentives directed to fishing, from the understanding of the fish potential in the region due to the large volume sold and their allocation to the international market, Leticia - Colombia. In the belief of being the education the way for positive changes, especially in the regional study scenario, students of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Amazon Technology - IFAM Campus Tabatinga were invited to voluntarily participate in the study, through the Pedagogical Workshop methodology collaborating with the teaching-learning process. observation techniques of data collection, questionnaires and interviews were applied. Results of psychometric scale (Likert) indicate satisfactory learning of the participants, students who did not know or had not discussed topic of knowledge initially showed overall average of 3.79, however after studies began to overall average of 4.64 points. Participants indicate, in their view, the importance of prepare for this market segment studying the Free Trade Area and related matters, in order to be able to exploit legal incentives for the benefit of the region. Fishermen with years of experience in their professional practice were interviewed and demonstrated the meaninglessness that the Free Trade Area of Tabatinga Trade carries in his profession, despite the legal provision to encourage the segment, clearly demonstrating the need for technical professionals with specific knowledge of the subject. We propose that the study of the Free Trade Area of the Campus Tabatinga is real potential to develop professional future technicians able to exploit incentives legislation and local potential in order to achieve the purpose of promoting the development of the western end of the state of Amazonas.
