Techniques for Selecting Spatially Variable Video Encoder Quantization for Remote Operation

Olsson, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis project, it is analyzed if compressing a video stream differently, depending on the importance of certain features would decrease the data that need to be sent, without decreasing the information perceived by the operator in teleoperations. This is done by using both a static and dynamic selection of features that gets more or less compressed depending on how important they are to the operator. It shows that the bandwidth used is reduced and most information is kept, but because of the hardware used for teleoperations are limited the usability of this method is also limited.

RESEARCH ON VIDEO OBJECT PLANE WITH APPLICATION IN TELEOPERATIONS

Khan, Mohsin 23 April 2013 (has links)
Teleoperations is a significant field in robotics research; its applications range from emergency rooms in hospitals to space station orbiting the Earth to Mars rovers scavenging the red planet for microscopic life. We have developed a new user defined selective video object plane scheme. This selective filter works with standard H.264 encoder which is developed using Intel IPP and uses the latest multicore capabilities of new processors and can encode and transmit high definition videos over internet in real time. The area of interest is extracted and encoded at a different frame rate and noise level than rest of the frame. Our modified algorithm uses user input as well as motion detection of individual pixels to define video object plane. Video object plane filter is designed to be used for video with slow moving objects for cases like surgical procedures. The results of our compression algorithm have been verified using SSIM, PSNR and human perception survey. All these results of our VOP showed better performance than comparable encoders at the same bandwidth.

Designing User Interfaces for Increased Depth Perception in Remote Crane Operation

Harju, Johan January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates different design choices for graphical user interfaces meant to improve depth perception in remote crane operation through measuring efficiency and user experience. To achieve this, three different graphical user interface designs were created and implemented into a cargo port simulator within the game engine Unity. These GUIs consists of a top-down shadow overlay, a guideline overlay and one overlay that would display held containers as see-through, called X-ray overlay. The three GUIs were then tested in a user study along a blank interface which had no overlay, in order to compare task efficiency, accuracy and usability among the four interfaces. In total, 15 participants took part in the user study in which none had any previous experience in using heavy machinery such as cargo cranes. These 15 participants were of various ages between 22-59 and of various genders. The results from the user study shows that the shadow overlay and the guideline overlay were more favoured among the participants who took part in the experiment, as well as more usable in comparison towards the X-ray overlay and having no overlay. The participants were also more accurate and efficient in placing containers while using the shadow overlay and the guideline overlay.
