The açai, also known as palm-juçara (Euterpe edulis), is traditionally consumed in Brazil but has gained popularity abroad as a functional food. Despite its known antioxidant potential, there is little information about its effect on health in general. The lead is a heavy metal known to increase free radicals, leading to oxidative cell damage. In this sense, this study was performed to evaluate whether E. edulis can reduce testicular morphological damage induced by chronic exposure to lead in rats. Thirty-four adult male Wistar rats, 100 days of age, were used and divided into six groups: control group (I) received distilled water, açai control group (II) received açai extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg, the lead control groups (III and IV) received lead acetate solution at doses of 32 and 128 mg/kg, respectively, while the treated groups (V and VI) received açai extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg and lead acetate in doses of 32 and 128 mg/kg, respectively, by gavage for 58 consecutive days. After the treatment period, the animals were euthanized and testicular samples were removed, weighed and embedded in historesin, stained and subjected to histological and morphometric analyzes. The weight of testicular parenchyma, and the percentage and height of the seminiferous epithelium showed significantly increased in animals treated with lead and açai. The intertubular percentage of connective tissue increased in all groups receiving lead, regardless of the açai. Açai promoted the recovery and increase of tubular parameters in animals that received different dosages of lead.
