Este trabalho tem como objetivo oferecer ao professor de matemática subsídios que permitam desenvolver atividades pedagógicas relacionadas aos conceitos básicos de divisibilidade de números inteiros. Para tanto, optou-se por desenvolvê-las de modo a possibilitar ao aluno a compreensão das ideias matemáticas envolvidas na detecção de erros de digitação em códigos numéricos utilizados nos códigos de barras e também no RG, CPF e ISBN. Vale ressaltar que tais atividades foram inspiradas nas metodologias de Resolução de Problemas e Atividades Investigativas embora, em alguns momentos, fizeram-se necessárias determinadas adaptações de acordo com o conteúdo. Assim, munidos desses elementos, os professores poderão dar aos alunos a oportunidade de desenvolver habilidades e competências da teoria elementar de números, aprimorar seus conhecimentos relacionados a situações do cotidiano e explicitar relações entre matemática e tecnologia. Este trabalho busca, também, despertar o interesse do aluno, que fica motivado ao perceber a aplicabilidade, no cotidiano, dos conceitos matemáticos aqui tratados. / The main objective of the work is to develop educational activities related to the basic concepts of divisibility of integral numbers, providing tools to math school teachers. The way those concepts were presented, creates the proper environment for the student to understand the mathematic logic behind the detection of typing errors in numerical codes, like for example: barcodes, RG, CPF and ISBN. It is noteworthy that the methodology used was inspired by problem solving and investigative activities although, adjustments were made in order to comply with the content. Thus, it is expected that teachers will be able to provide opportunities to their students to develop skills and competences on the domain of elementary number theory, improve their knowledge on daily situations and explain the relationship between mathematics and technology. This work also seeks to arouse the interest of the students, who get motivated when they realize the applicability in daily life of the mathematical concepts covered here.

Code Profiling : Static Code Analysis

<p>Capturing the quality of software and detecting sections for further scrutiny within are of high interest for industry as well as for education. Project managers request quality reports in order to evaluate the current status and to initiate appropriate improvement actions and teachers feel the need of detecting students which need extra attention and help in certain programming aspects. By means of software measurement software characteristics can be quantified and the produced measures analyzed to gain an understanding about the underlying software quality.</p><p>In this study, the technique of code profiling (being the activity of creating a summary of distinctive characteristics of software code) was inspected, formulized and conducted by means of a sample group of 19 industry and 37 student programs. When software projects are analyzed by means of software measurements, a considerable amount of data is produced. The task is to organize the data and draw meaningful information from the measures produced, quickly and without high expenses.</p><p>The results of this study indicated that code profiling can be a useful technique for quick program comparisons and continuous quality observations with several application scenarios in both industry and education.</p>

A Vicious Circle of Struggle and Survival: The Italian International Languages Program Stakeholders' Accounts and Practices

This qualitative case study was initiated to identify the existing process present in the Italian International Languages Program in the Hamilton-Wentworth area of the Province of Ontario. The premise was to investigate the various school practices that surround the International Languages Program as well as the interests of the various stakeholders in order to interpret and explain the current policies and practices that characterizes the Program. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a distinctive problematic area within the Italian International Languages Program through an exploratory qualitative case study. The conceptual framework for this study looks at Bourdieu‘s (1977) theory that language is an individual capital as well as a social capital for its linguistic market. The value of a language cannot be settled in linguistic terms: languages are linguistically equal; however, many argue that they are not socially equal (Bourdieu, 1977). This case study revealed precisely that language is not socially equal. Through this research, the process that exists within the Italian International Languages Program was revealed, along with the stakeholders‘ individual interests in the program. The International Languages Program is only worth what the people who speak it feel it is worth. iii The study population was selected purposefully including various categories of stakeholders in the program; school administrators, teachers, students, parents and the community at large. Selection of each individual participant was random. The information was analyzed through interpersonal qualitative methods that included the representations and accounts from the various stakeholders about the Italian International Languages Program. The stakeholders‘ views and comments were the analysis of the representative discourse. The most striking results from the study were the stakeholders‘ representations of a program whose very existence is bordering on survival and quickly heading for demise. Through the stakeholders‘ accounts and representations, it is clear that the Italian International Languages Program may no longer be viable. The study is a last attempt for the stakeholders to convey their reality of the program and to educate those that have the power to make a change.

Functionality Based Refactoring: Improving Source Code Comprehension

Maintenance is a difficult task because of the size of software systems. Much of the time spent on maintenance is spent trying to understand source code. Refactoring offers a way to improve source code design and quality. We present an approach to refactoring that is based on the functionality of source code. Sets of heuristics are captured as patterns of source code. Refactoring opportunities are located using these patterns, and dependencies are verified to check if the located refactorings preserve the dependencies in the source code. Our automated tool performs the functional-based refactoring opportunities detection process, verifies dependencies, and performs the refactorings that preserve dependencies. These refactorings transform the source code into a series of functional regions of code, which makes it easier for developers to locate code they are searching for. This also creates a chunked structure in the source code, which helps with bottom-up program comprehension. Thus, this process reduces the amount of time required for maintenance by reducing the amount of time spent on program comprehension. We perform case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of our automated approach on two open source applications. / Master

Toward an Understanding of Software Code Cloning as a Development Practice

Code cloning is the practice of duplicating existing source code for use elsewhere within a software system. Within the research community, conventional wisdom has asserted that code cloning is generally a bad practice, and that code clones should be removed or refactored where possible. While there is significant anecdotal evidence that code cloning can lead to a variety of maintenance headaches --- such as code bloat, duplication of bugs, and inconsistent bug fixing --- there has been little empirical study on the frequency, severity, and costs of code cloning with respect to software maintenance. This dissertation seeks to improve our understanding of code cloning as a common development practice through the study of several widely adopted, medium-sized open source software systems. We have explored the motivations behind the use of code cloning as a development practice by addressing several fundamental questions: For what reasons do developers choose to clone code? Are there distinct identifiable patterns of cloning? What are the possible short- and long-term term risks of cloning? What management strategies are appropriate for the maintenance and evolution of clones? When is the ``cure'' (refactoring) likely to cause more harm than the ``disease'' (cloning)? There are three major research contributions of this dissertation. First, we propose a set of requirements for an effective clone analysis tool based on our experiences in clone analysis of large software systems. These requirements are demonstrated in an example implementation which we used to perform the case studies prior to and included in this thesis. Second, we present an annotated catalogue of common code cloning patterns that we observed in our studies. Third, we present an empirical study of the relative frequencies and likely harmfulness of instances of these cloning patterns as observed in two medium-sized open source software systems, the Apache web server and the Gnumeric spreadsheet application. In summary, it appears that code cloning is often used as a principled engineering technique for a variety of reasons, and that as many as 71% of the clones in our study could be considered to have a positive impact on the maintainability of the software system. These results suggest that the conventional wisdom that code clones are generally harmful to the quality of a software system has been proven wrong.

Fast constructing tree structured vector quantization for image compression

In this paper, we propose a novel approach of vector quantization using a merge-based hierarchical neural network. Vector quantization¡]VQ¡^is known as a very useful technique for lossy data compression. Recently, Neural network¡]NN¡^algorithms have been used for VQ. Vlajic and Card proposed a modified adaptive resonance theory (modified ART2¡^[1] which is a constructing tree structure clustering method. However, modified ART2 has disadvantages of slow construction rate and constructing many redundant levels. Therefore, we propose a more efficient approach for constructing the tree in this paper. Our method establishes only those required levels without losing the fidelity of a compressed image.
