The House of Hamilton in its Anglo-Scottish setting in the seventeenth century : with a calendar of the correspondence in the Hamilton Archives at Lennoxlove, to 1712Marshall, Rosalind K. January 1970 (has links)
This thesis has been based on a detailed examination of the ten thousand two hundred letters which form the extant 17th century correspondence in His Grace the Duke of Hamilton's archives, and of approximately ten thousand household, building and estate accounts in the same Collection. A Calendar of the letters forms the appendix to the thesis; a Calendar of the accounts is in preparation. The exact period under consideration is 1625-1712, from the succession of the 1st duke to the family titles until the death of his grandson the 4th duke. It has often been assumed that in the society of seventeenth century Scotland there was a great gulf between the anglicised peerage and the rest of the population, that the leading members of the Scottish aristocracy enjoyed a high standard of living in England while their fellow-countrymen remained at home in comparatively primitive conditions. The present survey suggests that this view is inaccurate. The dukes of Hamilton were Scotland's premier peers, and the 1st and 2nd dukes did spend a large part of their adult lives in London. Nevertheless, they retained strong links with their own estates which they visited frequently. After the Civil War, the family became once more firmly based at Hamilton. They had their children educated locally, married their daughters into the Scottish peerage, and formed the focal point of the local community. Their houses were large, their furniture fine and their gardens well laid-out, but in this they were no different from their contemporaries of a similar status. A comparison with the family papers of other Scottish peers shows that they shared a common standard of living and indeed a common outlook. It would therefore seem probable that throughout the seventeenth century the Scottish peerage remained an integral part of Scottish society, living at home in a manner similar to that of the gentry and richer merchants, and relying to a large extent on local loyalties. Only towards the end of the period, with the coming of union with England and the emergence of a party political system, did the situation begin to change.

The outcome was a festival that would be called Arthemise's Pantry, the namesake being Arthemise Bouligny, the wife of Albert Baldwin, one of the owners of the home.

Dentro da premissa apresentada, pretende-se conhecer as implicações das atividades humanas nas decisões para as soluções espaciais adotadas para os ambientes da habitação. Pretende-se identificar os aspectos ergonômicos dos espaços destinados ao uso do homemcomo moradia, apontando os requisitos básicos para o desenvolvimento das atividades diárias dos usuários. A pesquisa se inicia associando os conceitos ergonômicos aos espaços da habitação, através de uma visão geral dos estudos que influenciaram o aprimoramento das técnicas de análise ergonômica para o espaço construído. Apresenta conceitos e requisitos para a análise das tarefas e investiga uma metodologia para identificar as atividades de um determinado grupo de usuários. Apresenta como parâmetros as soluções apontadas pelas pesquisas dos conceitos do Projeto Universal, e de estudos específicos para o usuário idoso. The creation of a courtyard microclimate thermal model for the analysis of courtyard housesBagneid, Amr 15 May 2009 (has links)
This research is an effort to revive the use of courtyard housing clusters in a modern
context, which were traditionally known for their distinctive passive cooling
performance. The goal is to promote energy efficient design in hot-arid climates and
temperate climates by reviving the use of courtyard housing clusters.
The objective is to introduce a simplified thermal model that simulates the
courtyard microclimate, which has been tested with actual field data from a case study
house. The case study house was an indigenous courtyard house in Cairo, Egypt that
was built around 1400 AD, having an area of about 5000 sq. ft. (i.e., comparable to the
size of a single-family house) with heavy thermal mass. To accomplish this, a finite
difference thermal network model was created for simulating the case study courtyard
microclimate. The finite difference (FD) model showed validity as it calibrated very
well against field data. This model allowed running parametric sensitivity studies on
the courtyard thermal simulation factors: air change rates, thermal mass, solar
absorption, wall and floor emissivity, ground temperature, cloud cover, and ambient air
temperature. The results of the parametric analysis showed that the model was
sensitive to variations in the air change rates, solar absorptivity, and ambient air
(rooftop) temperatures.
The courtyard microclimate model was then used in combination with thermal
simulation software (DOE-2) to analyze the thermal performance of the case study
house, which was also validated with measured field data. The DOE-2 program showed limitations when applied to the case study, non-conditioned building, and showed a
convergence deficiency when simulating high thermal mass buildings. The DOE-2
program did not perform well in simulating the impact of changes in thermal mass as
compared to previous published field measurements. The proposed combinations of the
FD microclimate/DOE-2 simulation did not perform as well as the FD microclimate
simulation.
The FD courtyard microclimate simulation model with onsite data for calibration
is advantageous in introducing for the first time the ability to perform computer
simulations on any number of proposed courtyard design alternatives for reaching
optimum thermal performance.

A study of investment return volatility in Taipi city house market-The application of GARCH modelLi, Yu-jing 03 August 2005 (has links)
House Price in Taiwan is very volatile during the past few decades. As Taiwan go into enormous boom, more and more amount of money invest in the house market. Although house investment is considered as a good investment tool with low risk and inflation hedge properties, its risk can not be underestimated. Therefore, by using the GARCH model, this paper tries to analyze volatilities of investment return in the Taipei housing market from 1973 to 2002. For existing housing, we are not able to use GARCH to model investment volatility because of uncorrelated term risks. On the contrary, pre-sale housing contains correlated term risk. We adopt ARMA(4,4)-GARCH(1,1) to model the investment volatility of pre-sale housing. The investment risk of pre-sale housing is not constant but is time-varying. When an unexpected event happened, the shock will persist but decay from 86 percent in the next term to 40 percent in the sixth term. And we can observe volatility cluster phenomenon from the graph of conditional variance. During 1973 to 1975¡B1979 to 1983 and 1987 to 1990, the risks are higher than other period. Because previous studies commonly suggest some structural changes in the Taiwan housing market, we also control the risk premium affected by the structural changes in our model. We found ARMA(4,4)-GARCH(1,1) can still model the investment volatility process of pre-sale housing, but there is no evidence of risk premium caused by structural changes.
