Nonclassical symmetry reductions and conservation laws for reaction-diffusion equations with application to population dynamics

Louw, Kirsten 29 May 2015 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Science, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2015. / This dissertation analyses the reaction-di usion equations, in particular the modi ed Huxley model, arising in population dynamics. The focus is on determining the classical Lie point symmetries, and the construction of the conservation laws and group-invariant solutions for reaction-di usion equations. The invariance criterion for determination of classical Lie point symmetries results in a system of linear determining equations which can be solved analytically. Furthermore, the Lie point symmetries associated with the conservation laws are determined. Reductions by associated Lie point symmetries are carried out. Nonclassical symmetry techniques are also employed. Here the invariance criterion for symmetry determination results in a system of nonlinear determining equations which may be solved albeit di cult. Nonclassical symmetries results in exact solutions which may not be constructed by classical Lie point symmetries. The highlight in construction of exact solution using nonclassical symmetries is the introduction of the modi ed Hopf-Cole transformation. In this dissertation, the di usion term and the coe cient of the source term are given as quadratic functions of space variable in one case, and the coe cient as the generalised power law in the other. These equations admit a number of classical Lie point symmetries. The genuine nonclassical symmetries are admitted when the source term of the reaction-di usion equation is a cubic.

The effects of the implementation of municipal by-laws on street vending :a case of Devenish street in Polokwane City, Limpopo, Province

Koma, Theresa Viniger Mmasechancha January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MPA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2017 / The concept street vending based on the literature review revealed that it is regarded as an informal sector industry that is dominated by women. This sector is largely operated by street vendors with low skill sets and minimal education. In Africa, street vending is noticeable amongst the people who are unemployed. The Polokwane Municipality Street Vending By-Laws allow every person an opportunity to become a street vendor. The purpose of research was to investigate if the implementation of the Polokwane Street Vending By-Laws was effective in promoting a healthy and safe environment in which vendors operate. Amongst other objectives, the researcher wanted to provide possible solutions to the challenges that may be faced by the Municipality in making the implementation of by-laws effective. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The data collected from street vendors operating in Devenish Street and officials of Polokwane Local Economic Development and Tourism Unit was presented and analysed. This study concludes by conferring the recommendations, conclusions and final remarks which were cautiously deduced from analysis of findings and the whole study. This followed by proposal that reflected the importance of bench marking with growing and metro cities for best practises in connection with effective implementation of local municipality street vending by-laws.

The convergence of industrial and workers compensation laws in the 1990s in Western Australia

Guthrie, Robert January 2003 (has links)
This dissertation describes and interprets the effects of the significant changes to the workers compensation, industrial and related laws that occurred in the early 1990s in Western Australia. These could be characterised as motivated by a desire by the then Coalition Government to reduce access to legal representation in compensation claims, limit the potential of workers to claim damages for negligence and reduce the use of collective bargaining mechanisms to resolve industrial disputes. Arguably, the common philosophical themes were to individualise the relationship between employer and employee and to reduce the bargaining strength of workers. In general terms, these themes were presented under the guise of flexible workplace relations. Whether these outcomes were achieved is not the subject of this analysis, rather, the aim is to show that one (perhaps unintended) consequence of the legislative changes of the early 1990s was to create significant areas of overlap in various employment related laws. These areas of overlap have led to some difficulties within the various tribunals involved in the resolution of employment related disputes. Over the last decade, the issues arising from the 1990s amendments have crystallized into important principles, which are discussed in this work. The thesis of this dissertation is that an examination of the development of the industrial and workers compensation laws in Western Australia in the 1990s establishes sufficient commonality between the industrial relations and compensation systems to warrant the rationalisation of these two jurisdictions.
