Revealing lives : a qualitative study with children and young people affected by parental alcohol problems

Hill, Louise Catherine January 2012 (has links)
In recent decades, there has been recognition that children and young people have considerable knowledge about their own lives that merits academic attention. The overall aim of this study is to reflexively engage with children and young people who have been affected by parental (or significant carer) alcohol problems and to explore, from their perspectives, the perceived impact on their lives and their experiences of support. Given the common secrecy and potential stigma of problematic alcohol use, the experiences of children and young people living in families where one or both parents (or carers) have an alcohol problem often remains hidden. My interest in using a participatory research approach with children has led to my further aim: to critically explore and develop research methods with children and young people to explore this potentially sensitive topic. As part of my commitment of conducting research with, rather than on, children, I involved two groups of children and young people already accessing support services for parental alcohol problems in the research design. The research built from this foundation and, in total, 30 children and young people aged from nine to 20 years old participated in individual, pair or small group interviews or a group work programme via a range of voluntary support services across Scotland. This study reflexively explores the commonalities, diversities and complexities across and within children and young people’s lives when affected by, to use their own frequently used term, parental alcohol problems. Emergent themes of knowledge, emotion, trust and difference are presented in four findings chapters. Many children and young people had extensive knowledge about the impact of parental alcohol problems on their lives and I describe their own nuanced ways of choosing to communicate this knowledge in the research context. I critically discuss the importance, yet experienced complexities, of understanding children and young people’s emotions about parental alcohol problems. Children and young people’s conceptualisations of trust, whether declared, demonstrated or alluded to, were central in their decisions to talk ‘outside of the family’, including to myself. I consider whether the concept of stigma can sufficiently explain the perceived and experienced differences that children and young people shared. In recognising that knowledge is co-constructed in a particular social context, I demonstrate that a reflexive and critical exploration of research methods and relationships can further contribute to our understanding about the heterogeneity of children and young people’s lives when affected by parental alcohol problems. Finally, I discuss the theoretical, methodological and policy and practice implications derived from engaging with children and young people affected by parental alcohol problems.

Gestão e eficácia do planejamento do desenvolvimento regional / Effectiveness of management and planning of regional development

Myrrha, Marco Aurélio de Lima e 16 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Nilson Antonio Modesto Arraes / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Agrícola / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-16T02:29:21Z (GMT). The political/administrative decentralization in progress in Brazil since the Constitution 1988 amplified decision autonomy, empowerment and control on the resources and duties of the cities. Nevertheless, both federal and states administrations diminished their backing to the finance and municipal technical assistance programs. To aggravate the situation, widespread are the economic and managerial constraints faced by a great deal of brazilian cities, noticeably those which have few inhabitants and are distant from major administrative capital cities. Given such perspective, new managerial structures/patterns which enable greater inter-municipal cooperation have been pursued, since various problems and potentialities are common to the majority of those cities. There are examples of similar successful cooperation actions carried out in many countries. In Brazil, the majority of the initiatives to establish inter-municipal cooperation in progress have been facing difficulty in terms of continuity. The proposition of this study is "how to implement plans of regional development without resorting to political/administrative authorities constituted to their management?" The objective is to evaluate conditions which favor or hinder the management and implementation of regional planning and the consequent consolidation of the "micro-regions". The hypothesis is that the inter-municipal associations might represent important options for the management and implementation of regional development plans in Minas Gerais. The methodology ranged the stages: (i) bibliographic revision; (ii) Collection of data on the Regional Plans in study; (iii) Systematization and analysis of three currently consolidated initiatives by states administrations to foster regional development and the recently concluded Regional Development Plan in Minas Gerais, which will be utilized as a source of examples; (iv) Presentation and discussion of the results based on the premise that the institutionalization of a given region involves four aspects to assess the experiences on regional planning. At stage (v) the main findings are presented: (1) the state governmental authorities experience great difficulty to act as agents for the implementation of planning actions and tend to discontinue programs implemented by previous administrations, in case an instance of governance is not consolidated. (2) the existence of currently consolidated municipal associations in Minas Gerais, such as AMEG, together with new institutional possibilities like inter-municipal consortia represent important steps to the commencement of the process of territorial management in Minas Gerais State / Mestrado / Planejamento e Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

Since State began to interfere in this relationship, and the development caused social conflicts because of exclusion and economical disparity, the city also received the influence of these process, not reflecting any more the citizens face and changed to an imposed reality. As State became weakness, the society began to move, fighting to rescue rights and to participate on political decisions. Laws has changed by those groups influence, opening new spaces where people can recover its right to opine, to intervene and to control cities management. The aim of this paper is to describe this historical process, since urban centers arise to the conquest of popular participation instruments on cities planning and government. The results and problems of the these new way of management in Brazil are also described.

Researching the experiences of children and young people from armed forces families

Bowes, Evelyn Ruth January 2018 (has links)
Children from armed forces families are identified internationally as a group facing challenging situations, circumstances which can have a negative impact on their educational experiences. The main focus in existing research has been on measuring children's outcomes, but these studies generate little insight into how children themselves make sense of their experiences. There are only a few in-depth qualitative studies, mostly conducted outside the UK, exploring the lived experiences of children from armed forces families. This study explores how children of armed forces personnel from schools across Scotland expressed their experiences. It aims to better understand approaches to the provision of inclusive educational support. A suite of methods - object elicitation, video diaries, peer interviewing, drawing, and vignettes - was employed, to generate expressions from a total of 41 children and young people aged eight to 14 years, from three primary and two secondary Scottish schools. A post-qualitative orientation supported the inquiry to look beyond children's voices in isolation. An assemblage approach was taken to the analysis of the audio/video recordings, transcripts, artefacts, and field notes from the research encounters. The analysis showed how the different and shifting conditions of the research led to the creation of ongoing productive encounters. A key insight was that schools have much unrealised capacity to positively contribute to the experiences of these children. Methodological insights alongside empirical findings are used to generate signposts for the provision of improved educational support. The thesis argues that, ultimately, any improvement will involve entering into reciprocal, experimental, and socio-materially mediated dialogues with children in ways that both align with children's lived experience of armed forces life but also allow for the exploration of change and becoming-different as outcomes of those dialogues.

Barczik, Kristina, Jung, Nicole, Stiel, Janina 11 March 2022 (has links)
FUNÇÃO SOCIAL DA PROPRIEDADE URBANA NO III PLANO DIRETOR DE PELOTAS

Russo, João Paulo Rezende 26 September 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-22T17:26:49Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 joao.pdf: 773060 bytes, checksum: ec38a1a6af60328e954a7bc1f199263e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-26 / This Dissertation aims to talk about dwelling and housing, concerning social aspects, social rights, applicability and efficiency in their environment. This project shows the idea of Master Degree in Social Politics, knowing that it analyzes the social function of property at the III Development Plan of Pelotas City and the way it came to be. From the concept of social function of property, you can find a wider concept of habitat, the right to city and urban field, how the outlook for urban development is influencing new horizons that cover the social function of property. The right to city, which is a relatively new issue to the Brazilian context, have a direct influence on how the social function or property should be looked at. And this is the reason why we should take into consideration a study of urban development, distribution around habitable areas and ways of spatial segregation. For the last ten years, Brazil has been going through substantial changes in the dwelling field, with social programs for different social classes regarding buying a home or building a home. However, the right of property and its social function remains slacked when it comes to efficiency, even though there is an on going changing in the social environment. This project intends to analyze how the III Development Plan of Pelotas City dealt with not only the social function or property and preservation of the right to city, but also the way the issues have been discussed, the way the context influences the housing deficit in the city, and if it has been done democratically / A presente Dissertação busca como norte a moradia, a habitação, visualizadas no aspecto social, no âmbito dos direitos sociais, aplicabilidade e eficácia dos mesmos no meio em que se inserem.
