<p>Hedge fund investing is a relatively new phenomenon in Sweden. The first Swedish hedge fund was started in 1996. This new financial sector has since showed a steady growth.</p><p>Due to the novelty of hedge fund phenomena, it is right to ask whether the investors are prepared for this kind of investments; how they choose their hedge funds investments and whether they have adequate knowl-edge in the field.</p><p>This thesis provides a mapping of the investors’ behavior regarding hedge fund investments. We have concluded that Swedish hedge fund investors have a limited basis of knowledge required to fully utilize hedge funds in their portfolios.</p>

Improved monocular videogrammetry for generating 3D dense point clouds of built infrastructure

Videogrammetry is an affordable and easy-to-use technology for spatial 3D scene recovery. When applied to the civil engineering domain, a number of issues have to be taken into account. First, videotaping large scale civil infrastructure scenes usually results in large video files filled with blurry, noisy, or simply redundant frames. This is often due to higher frame rate over camera speed ratio than necessary, camera and lens imperfections, and uncontrolled motions of the camera that results in motion blur. Only a small percentage of the collected video frames are required to achieve robust results. However, choosing the right frames is a tough challenge. Second, the generated point cloud using a monocular videogrammetric pipeline is up to scale, i.e. the user has to know at least one dimension of an object in the scene to scale up the entire scene. This issue significantly narrows applications of generated point clouds in civil engineering domain since measurement is an essential part of every as-built documentation technology. Finally, due to various reasons including the lack of sufficient coverage during videotaping of the scene or existence of texture-less areas which are common in most indoor/outdoor civil engineering scenes, quality of the generated point clouds are sometimes poor. This deficiency appears in the form of outliers or existence of holes or gaps on surfaces of point clouds. Several researchers have focused on this particular problem; however, the major issue with all of the currently existing algorithms is that they basically treat holes and gaps as part of a smooth surface. This approach is not robust enough at the intersections of different surfaces or corners while there are sharp edges. A robust algorithm for filling holes/gaps should be able to maintain sharp edges/corners since they usually contain useful information specifically for applications in the civil and infrastructure engineering domain. To tackle these issues, this research presents and validates an improved videogrammetric pipeline for as built documentation of indoor/outdoor applications in civil engineering areas. The research consists of three main components: 1. Optimized selection of key frames for processing. It is necessary to choose a number of informative key frames to get the best results from the videogrammetric pipeline. This step is particularly important for outdoor environments as it is impossible to process a large number of frames existing in a large video clip. 2. Automated calculation of absolute scale of the scene. In this research, a novel approach for the process of obtaining absolute scale of points cloud by using 2D and 3D patterns is proposed and validated. 3. Point cloud data cleaning and filling holes on the surfaces of generated point clouds. The proposed algorithm to achieve this goal is able to fill holes/gaps on surfaces of point cloud data while maintaining sharp edges. In order to narrow the scope of the research, the main focus will be on two specific applications: 1. As built documentation of bridges and building as outdoor case studies. 2. As built documentation of offices and rooms as indoor case studies. Other potential applications of monocular videogrammetry in the civil engineering domain are out of scope of this research. Two important metrics, i.e. accuracy, completeness and processing time, are utilized for evaluation of the proposed algorithms.

Directing 'The Absolute' : towards destabilising the victim/perpetrator binary in Sam Shepard's A lie of the mind (1985)

This study aims to investigate and directorially apply Antonin Artaud's concept of The Absolute in order to destabilise the victim/perpetrator binary between the characters Beth and Jake in Sam Shepard's play text, A lie of the mind (1986). Previous theoretical analyses of Beth and Jake in A lie of the mind frame them as victims of their circumstances and as victims and perpetrators of violence (Bottoms 1998:16). I will explore the violent relationship between them in the context of the victim/perpetrator binary set up in the original play and re-imagine this binary by creating a radical reinterpretation of the relationship between the characters in a theatre production titled ? (2015). I argue that a directorial treatment of The Absolute assists in destabilising the victim/perpetrator binary present in Beth and Jake's relationship. To reinterpret Beth and Jake's relationship, I explore René Girard's notions of violence, victimisation, and scapegoating, as well as the Artaudian notions of Cruelty, The Absolute, and the Theatre of Cruelty. I apply the Girardian concepts and vocabulary to a reading of the relationship between Beth and Jake. I also discuss the ways in which Artaud and Girard conceptually relate to one another. I then provide a practical exploration within the framework of the Theatre of Cruelty by creating an original production, ? (2015), in which The Absolute facilitates the destabilisation of the victim/perpetrator binary that exists between Beth and Jake. In ? (2015), the relationship between Beth and Jake is reconceptualised and reinterpreted through taking cognisance of the Artaudian-Girardian framework. This dissertation concludes that Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty and the notion of The Absolute are able to destabilise the victim/perpetrator binary between Beth and Jake by replacing sexual desire in their relationship with transcendental love, and reconstructing and reimagining their relationship accordingly. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Drama / MA / Unrestricted

In this paper I set out to find a new tradition beyond the dilemmas of modern and post-modern philosophy, and, once found, to explore the basic assumptions and their correlative view of the world. To do this I analyze and compare St. Augustine and Max Scheler as thinkers who avoided many of our modern-day dilemmas. Starting with Scheler’s abstract thought, I then proceed to show how it comes to life in Augustine’s Confessions. Both thinkers are woven together into an organic whole that seeks to present as many interconnections of internal justification for this worldview as possible. The end result that is hoped for is twofold: 1. to show the extreme connection binding these thinkers together and 2. to present a viable alternative to the action forms that us modern subjects live in.

The Absolute Yields of Xenon and Krypton in U 238 Spontaneous Fission

The absolute abundances of fission-product xenon and krypton isotopes in six uranium minerals were determined mass spectrometrically using the isotope dilution technique. The fission products were resolved into a U spontaneous fission component, a U 235 neutron-induced fission component, and a U 238 neutron-induced fission component. The presence of U 238 of neutron-induced fission indicated that t he neutron energies in uranium minerals were higher than had been suspected. Internal consistency in the analysis was achieved only when the I 29 yield in u235 thermal neutron fission reported by Purkayastha and Martin was lowered by 20%. The number of U 238 spontaneous fissions was calculated from the lead age, U 238 content, and the U 238 pontaneous fission half life. A comparison of the number of fission products from U 238 spontaneous fission and the number of spontaneous fissions in each of the six minerals showed that five of the six minerals had lost large portions of their noble gases. A fractionation of krypton relative to xenon accompanied this loss. The results obtained for the sixth mineral indicated little or no loss of xenon and krypton. Absolute yields for U 238 spontaneous fission were therefore determined from an analysis of this mineral. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A realistic visualization that enhances a virtually authentic experience is the ambition of any visualization system in a simulator environment. But calibrating and maintaining a high quality visualization system entail large costs, resources and time. Hence, a soft- ware has been developed to facilitate the measuring of three useful metrics that lay the foundation for automatic calibration of visual projector systems. The software and associ- ated method conducts relevant measurements which are compatible with arbitrary surface shapes and can be utilized as an assurance of quality measurement tool. The measure- ments include absolute surface shape, absolute geometry and projector blending zone con- tributions.
