<p>The purpose of writing The Effectiveness of the Chaplaincy Pocket Guide, ?Airmen?s Guide to Grief Recovery? on Members of the Community at Aviano Air Force Base, Italy is to discover the effectiveness of a grief recovery program in the Air Force context at Aviano Air Base. A pocket guide was designed specifically to reach out to the Airmen at Aviano, in such a way as to encourage, strengthen, and educate them in their individual grief journeys. There are ten embedded units at Aviano Air Base and the present researcher selected one participant from each unit to use the AGGR pocket guide in addressing their grief issues as part of this study. Although the AGGR pocket guide was written for airmen, not all ten participants were airmen. The three who were not?a spouse, a civilian employee and a member of an army tenant unit?nevertheless, are residents of Aviano AB and are immersed in Air Force culture and familiar with the common sources of grief associated with life on an air base. The grief issues were varied, some due to deaths (though not necessarily combat related), and some due to divorce. The researcher employed a Grief Recovery Survey as the instrument to measure the degree of grief recovery and interviewed all ten participants about their experience of grief recovery. The findings were generally positive and the researcher is inclined to believe pocket guides like the AGGR can be useful tools for the chaplain?s office.

<p>When addressed with military strategy the first thought is to drift towards the big name battlefields: Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. Our obsession with tactics and outcomes clouds our minds to the social, cultural, and political factors that took place away from the front lines. Less appealing, but no less important to understanding the war as a whole, this study incorporates non-military factors to explain the shift of Confederate military strategy in the Western Theater. Southern citizens experienced a growth of military awareness, which greatly influenced the military policies of Richmond, and altered how Confederate generals waged war against Union armies. The geography of Mississippi and Tennessee, and the proximity of these states to Virginia, also forced Western generals to pursue aggressive military campaigns with less than ideal military resources. Finally, the emotions and personal aspirations of general officers in the Army of Tennessee, and the Western Theater as a whole, produced a culture of failure, which created disunion and instability in the Western command structure. Confederate generals pursued aggressive military campaigns due to a combination of social, cultural, political, and military factors.

The purpose of this study is to analyze certain major reforms in the Code in an effort to determine whether or not the "status quo" has been change. These reforms are: (1) henceforth all military legal proceedings are to be governed by a single Code equally applicable to all the services; (2) all military judicial proceedings are to be governed as near as practicable by the rules of civil procedure and evidence observed in the criminal proceedings of the United States district courts; (3) all persons charged with an offense are to have competent legal counsel at all stages of pretrial and trial proceedings; (4) all persons subject to the Code are assured that they shall not be subject to compulsory self-incrimination; (5) all who are subject to the Code are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and (6) all are guaranteed an automatic and mandatory review (under certain conditions) of their trials.

Artist Statement My work is about the military. I represent my views of the military from my perspective as a military wife, sister, and daughter. The themes are about separation, endurance, and the fragility that lies beneath the people who serve, and the people that support them. It’s about pain, violence, anxiety, and fear, as well as pride and honor. I want my work to enhance the view of the military but also depict its hardships.

To attract higher quality officers to serve as company officers for the Brigade of Midshipmen and to provide officers with an opportunity for an advanced degree, the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program was established in 1997. This program allows Navy and Marine Corps officers to receive a Master of Science in Leadership and Human Resource Development from the Naval Postgraduate School. After the first year, the program graduates serve two years as company officers and work closely with the midshipmen of the brigade. This research uses data obtained from semi-structured interviews and self-administered questionnaires of 27 LEAD program graduates. It focuses on the perceptions of graduates concerning the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the program, and makes recommendations for change and improvement. This research adds to the body of knowledge and recommendations that exist and serves as a five-year retrospective on the perceptions of the effectiveness of the program and whether or not the program is perceived to be meeting its goals. / Major, United States Marine Corps

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis examines the forecast accuracy of repair times for a subset of repairable U.S Navy inventory items. Forecasts are currently calculated using the Uniform Inventory Control Program (UICP) on a quarterly basis. The UICP model use the time of repairs completed in the current quarter to update a "file" value in order to forecast the repair times for the following quarter. Forecasts are calculated separately for repairable items grouped into families. This thesis demonstrates that aggregation repairs by their completion dates, as currently done by the UICP model, causes forecast to be affected by the nature of the repair arrival process. The more that this process differs from a Poisson process, the more that the forecast values are affected. Using bootstrap simulations, the effect of the repair process on the forecasting is quantified. This thesis also explores alternatives to the UICP model for forecasting repair times. In particular, an approach that utilizes repairs that have not been completed by the end of the current quarter is developed. / Captain, Brazilian Army

These concepts deal with civilian control of armed forces at a national level. Since after the end of the Cold War, the European employment of military forces within a multinational framework became a regularity, it is now pertinent to ask whether and how these concepts fit at the international level. The construction of Europe and the rise of new security challenges raises the issue of democratic civil military relations in the European Union. Croatia emerged from war in the mid-1990s to embark on a path of accession to Euro-Atlantic institutions. The present thesis examines the connections between civil military and security sector reform, the consolidation of democracy, and the enlargement of NATO as it concerns this most pivotal nation of central and south eastern Europe. The thesis treats the multi-national process of alliance enlargement, relating this theme to the specific set of tasks faced by Croatian policy makers and soldiers in the 1990s and in the present. Further, the study analyzes the civil-military evolution and character of the Croatian armed forces, as well as the broader theme of security sector reform in Croatia, especially since the advent of democratic government in 2000. The thesis concludes with an assessment of the contributions of international organizations and bi-lateral aid, as well as a concise evaluation of the tasks yet to be performed by Croatia in the wake of the Prague 2002 North Atlantic Council series of invitations and what lies ahead in the next round of Alliance Enlargement perhaps in 2007. / US Marine Corps author.

These relations are assessed in terms of their adequacy to obtain Ukraine's overall strategic goals. The quantity and complexity of the U.S. defense and military engagement programs towards Ukraine have made the entire coordination process fragmented. The thesis concludes that the recent goals and objectives of existing relations should be concentrated on the Ukrainian Armed Forces transition to democratic civil-military relations. Approved for public release; distribution unlimited / Botswana remains one of the few countries in the world (and the only country in the South African Development Community (SADC)) where females are legally prohibited from joining the military. The political and social pressure in the 21st century has softened the opposition of many influential politicians and bureaucrats to calls for inclusionary statutes. This thesis examines the possibility of opening doors to women in the Botswana Defence Force (BDF). It examines the policies, programs and scope of the role of women in the US armed services, Canadian Forces (CF) and the South African National Defence Forces (SANDF). It identifies from these highlights the most effective approaches to recruiting, training, and retaining women in the BDF once the opportunity is availed. In particular, this thesis examines the Six critical policies of the US armed services and the CF, namely, sexual harassment, fraternization, employment of women, equal opportunity, pregnancy, and family care. This thesis considers the lessons from these for the BDF. Two critical cases of sexual harassment, (the 1991 Tailhook Navy and Marine Corps Convention and the 1996 US Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground incident), are highlighted in the study. The leading recommendations emphasize the need for the BDF to take the steps required to evoke a cultural change to affect the attitudes and perceptions of personnel and to examine how the SANDF administers its policies as they pertain to women. / Major, Botswana Defence Force
