O elogio da velhice no De senectute de Marco Túlio Cícero / The praise of old age in The Senectute of Marcus Tullius Cicero

Research into the attitudes, perceptions and circumstances of Asian elders with respect to health and old age : a stress and coping perspective

Azmi, Sabiha January 1999 (has links)
Research into the health needs of Asian elders has been scarce, that which does exist has lacked a theoretical framework. A first attempt is made in the present research study to relate the literature on race and ethnicity to theory and practice in gerontology. A stress and coping model from the gerontological literature was adapted to account for outcomes of physical/psychological health and well-being amongst south Asian elders. In order to test the applicability of this model the first aim of the study was to gain an insight into the circumstances and situations of Asian elders on a range of demographic, support, health and well-being factors. And then-secondly, to see how these factors may interrelate according to the stress and coping model. A range of specific hypotheses were formulated on the basis of this model. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews conducted with a community sample of 70 South Asian elders who were 55 years and over. The interview schedule consisted of both standardised measures of health, stress and coping as well as structured questions on the use of formal/informal support, satisfaction with life and attitudes towards old age. Data were analysed in two phases. The results from the first phase which were largely descriptive, suggest that a significant number of Asian elders were living either alone or with their spouse. In general Asian elders were living in circumstances of material disadvantage, suffering from poor health and chronic illnesses, reporting high levels of psychological distress with little formal and informal support. Awareness and receipt of specialist support services for older adults was low. The results from the second phase involving analyses of correlations and regressions, indicate significant correlations between outcome measures of health/mental health and satisfaction with life with measures of coping, appraisals and to some extent resource variables. There were also significant correlations between positive/negative outcomes of health and well-being with positive/negative ways of coping, appraisal and some resource variables. The factor associated most strongly with outcome variables was social support (resource) rather than coping. Overall, the stress and coping model appears to account well for most of the research findings. The results were discussed in relation to previous research literature and implications for future research and clinical practice were discussed.

Awareness of memory deficit in Alzheimer's disease patients and memory-impaired older adults

Correa, Denise Dias 09 July 2018 (has links)
Disturbances in awareness of memory deficit have been observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet few studies have systematically investigated the phenomena in this population. The present study has applied the concepts and instruments used in the metamemory literature to the study of awareness of memory deficit in twenty mild AD patients, eighteen individuals with memory impairment, and eighteen normal elderly controls. Specifically, a multidimensional approach to metamemory was selected including an evaluation of perception of memory change, knowledge about memory functioning, and self-monitoring of memory performance. Consistent with previous research, AD patients reported less change in memory functioning than did their informants, suggesting that these patients have diminished awareness of the extent of the decline in their memory abilities. No differences among the three groups were observed in self-report measures addressing the use of strategies, perception of control over memory functioning, and presence of anxiety in memory-related activities. Diminished self-monitoring abilities were observed in the AD patients' tendency to make a high number of intrusion errors with few self-corrections, and to overestimate their performance on memory tests. The results also suggest that relatives' evaluation of memory functioning may be particularly useful in differentiating AD patients from older adults displaying memory impairment and from normal elderly. / Graduate

A representação e a vivência da velhice: o lugar do trabalho e da aposentadoria / Experiences of the old age: identity and retirement

Maria Isabel Toscanelli Campos de Oliveira 30 March 1990 (has links)
This ls an empiric inductive study that checks the role now old age retirement and the subjective states that such facts suggest. The procedure started with partially structured interviews with seven retired lady teachers. The analysis has revealed that the old is a critical period and that retirement is a traumatic fact. The subjects of the interview felt alienated, expressed regret losses, and spoke experiences of fear and loneliness about a of future projects. After suc11 collected data, we built a research tool that was applied to a hundred subjects, chosen at random, and distributed among five age levels, the age varying from eighteen to eighty-two. Among the retired individuals above fifty-nine, we noticed the reduction of self-esteem and possibility of acting, and we observed their difficulty In reorganizing new values. Among the retired above fifty-nine, we noticed a conflict, through which the Individual expresses his difficulties related to the researched aspects. consequently, any clinical intervention, at a therapeutic or preventive level, cannot Ignore the confrontation of the stereotype of a quiet old age and the experienced reality, for, althougt1 we believe that the Individual may continue to develop, even at this stage of life, we noticed that the researched aspects are difficult to deal with and are noticed in a negative way by the researched population. We do hope that these results can motivate other researchers, towards th1s group of society. We should like that those aspects that can guaratee a better old age and a bigger integration of those individuals to the community could be more largely researched
