Orientador: Tânia Regina de Luca / Banca: Zélia Lopes da Silva / Banca: Rodrigo Patto Sá Motta / Resumo: O trabalho tem como fonte e objeto o jornal Meio-Dia, que circulou durante os anos de 1939 a 1942, sob direção de Joaquim Inojosa, expoente do modernismo pernambucano. A linha editorial do periódico sofreu alterações ao longo da circulação, mas distinguiu-se por apoiar, na maior parte de sua existência, a Alemanha nazista, enquanto a quase totalidade dos órgãos da grande imprensa, então submetida ao controle do Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP) e do Conselho Nacional de Imprensa (CNI), apoiava a causa aliada. A pesquisa teve por meta analisar sistematicamente como, no jornal Meio-Dia, exceção dentre os periódicos brasileiros de então, construíram-se representações acerca do Estado Novo e dos países participantes da Segunda Guerra Mundial, temas que dominaram editoriais e artigos de seu fundador e proprietário, Joaquim Inojosa, cujas opiniões variaram ao longo do período de publicação da folha. Assim, de uma posição de neutralidade, adotada ao longo de 1939, o jornal passou a atacar de forma impiedosa a Inglaterra e louvar a Alemanha e seu regime, postura que vigorou ao longo dos anos de 1940 e 1941. A mudança da posição do Brasil a partir de janeiro de 1942 afetou diretamente o vespertino, que mudou novamente de posição e enfrentou dificuldades crescentes, que acabaram por levar ao encerramento de suas atividades. A consulta aos arquivos do Departamento de Ordem Política e Social (DOPS) revelou indícios das conexões do jornal com a Embaixada da Alemanha e empresas germânicas, além de tornarem patente que o jornal e o seu proprietário eram observados de perto / Abstract: The work has, as its source and object, the Meio-Dia newspaper, which was published during the years 1939-1942 under the administration of Joaquim Inojosa, exponent of modernism in Pernambuco. The newspaper's opinion has changed over the years, but distinguished itself because of its support of Nazi Germany in most of its existence, while almost all the organs of the mainstream media, then under control of the Departmento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP) and the Conselho Nacional de Imprensa (CNI), supported the allied cause. The research goal was to systematically analyze how, in the MeioDia newspaper, exception among Brazilian journals of the time, were made representations about the Estado Novo and the participating countries in the Second World War, themes that dominated editorials and articles of its founder and owner, Joaquim Inojosa, whose opinions varied during the publication of the paper. Thus, from a position of neutrality, adopted during 1939, the newspaper went on to attack mercilessly England and praise Germany's regime, a stance that prevailed during the years 1940 and 1941. The change of Brazil's position in January 1942 directly affected the journal, which again changed side and faced increasing difficulties, which eventually led to the end of its activities. M.A. (Communication Science) / This dissertation is a profusion in combining two sub disciplines of the communication science, namely journalism and persuasion theory. An. analysis of journalism as a form of persuasion is made in which is shown that not only in explicit commentary, but also in everyday news stories the contents is slanted. This is because of the inescapable subjectivity of man that de-objectifies information. The sources of de-objectification is localized in the study by means of a model of the press process, which traces the development of the news item and identifies the different phases in which the information is, mostly unknowingly, given new meanings by subtle slanting. As a pilot study, and therefore as a matter of testing the validity of combining the two communication subdisciplines mentioned, a simple comparative study is done. The most explicit commentary article, namely the leader, of three Johannesburg newspapers are sampled and judged by means of three of the most simple persuasion principles. A comparison is made of the effective use of these persuasive techniques by the three newspapers' leader writers. The conclusion is reached that further studies in this field could be very fruitful, keeping the following two qualifications in mind firstly, that the many contradicting conclusions reached within persuasion research should be cleared up, and secondly, that some sort of stable scale for measuring the effectiveness of journalistic persuasion, except by comparative means, be devised.
