Patient ratings of the quality in Saskatchewan hospitals

Montaque, Kimberley 28 October 2010
Patients are the recipients of the provision of healthcare and an invaluable source when evaluating the quality of healthcare provided in our hospitals. There is limited research evaluating patient perceptions of overall quality of healthcare. A larger study Convergence and Divergence in Perspectives in Quality represented the first Saskatchewan effort to explore patient perceptions and what aspects patients indicate as important when evaluating the provision of quality of care. In the larger study, patients hospitalized with one of four tracer conditions (cerebral vascular accident, myocardial infarction, prostate disease and hysterectomy) were surveyed about their involvement in and satisfaction with the provision of healthcare. The present study, using a data subset of the larger study, specifically explored patients perceptions on their involvement in decision-making, feelings of being well informed of ones medical condition, and sources of health information. These perceptions were correlated with the overall ratings of quality of care. Findings indicated a moderately high overall rating of quality of care. Increased involvement in decision making regarding medical care and options for treatment, and the feelings of being fairly or well informed were associated with higher ratings of overall quality of care. While few of the correlations reached greater than moderate effect, it is still clear that opportunities for patients participation in decisions related to their medical care and patients feelings of being fairly or well informed contributed to overall perceptions of quality of care. The majority of patients preferred their doctor or nurse to provide information about their medical condition, thus indicating the human touch is still preferred. Nurses can use these results to advocate for time to ensure patients have access to correct information and are included in decisions about their care.

E-recruitment: the effectiveness of the internet as a recruitment source

Marr, Erica R. January 2007 (has links)
The present study has made a comparative assessment of recruitment source effectiveness. The study is based on the pre-hire measures of the quantity and quality of applicants, with a specific focus on e-recruitment. A nine year longitudinal study was employed over a period of pre-internet and post-internet use by a large organisation which enabled the exploration of changes in applicant data. Recruitment source effects were assessed through two perspectives: applicant and organisational. The relationship between source and applicant was explored in terms of key job and organisational attributes communicated to attract quality applicants, and their subsequent intention to pursue the job. The research was designed with two studies to capture the two perspectives. Applicant perspectives were assessed through the distribution of a survey to real applicants of the organisation. Organisational perspectives were captured through interviews with Human Resource Practitioners of eight mid- to large-size organisations. Results indicated that the quality of applicants generated by e-recruitment is equivalent to or less than that of other sources, therefore it is not the most effective recruitment source. Furthermore, recruitment sources had some effect on applicant intentions to pursue the job, but this relationship was not mediated by applicant perspectives. In terms of source information, job attributes were considered more important than organisational attributes in attracting quality applicants from both perspectives. Overall, the research has provided evidence to support the need for organisations to develop a recruitment strategy which incorporates a diverse range of sources to reach quality applicants in the desired target market.

Goczkowska, Naomi, Hallenberg, Terese January 2017 (has links)
Background/Aim Confidence in Swedish healthcare is falling. The aim of this study was to investigate parents in a parental group on the social media Facebook, regarding their trust in advice regarding their children, obtained from pediatric healthcare-centers and other sources of information. Methods A web-based questionnaire was sent to a parental group on Facebook with about 12 000 members. The questionnaire was answered by 240 parents. Results The results of the survey showed that most respondents had "great trust" or "neither big nor little trust" in advice from pediatric healthcare-centers, regarding their children. The survey also showed that parents largely used Internet to seek information about their children. They had equal confidence in pediatric healthcare-centers, as in family/relatives, friends, literature and Internet. No significant differences between parents' confidence in pediatric healthcare-centers related to ethnic background, age, number of children, educational level and housing environment were found. However, a relationship was shown between parents' satisfaction with their pediatric healthcare-nurse and their trust in advice from the nurse and the feeling that the nurse listened to them, and their trust in advice from the nurse. Conclusions The confidence in advice from pediatric healthcare-centers is good, but could improve regarding the relationship with trust towards other sources of information such as family, friends, literature and Internet. Healthcare staff has a responsibility to stay updated and get the right knowledge to avoid mistrust with caregivers. Caregivers also have an opportunity to influence trust in the healthcare-system through good treatment and a patient-centered approach.

A single-photon source based on a lateral n-i-p junction driven by a surface acoustic wave

Hsiao, Tzu-Kan January 2018 (has links)
Single-photon sources are essential building blocks in quantum photonic networks, where quantum-mechanical properties of photons are utilised to achieve quantum technologies such as quantum cryptography and quantum computing. In this thesis, a single-photon source driven by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) is developed and characterised. This single-photon source is based on a SAW-driven lateral n-i-p junction in a GaAs quantum-well structure. On this device, the lateral n-i-p junction is formed by gate-induced electrons and holes in two adjacent regions. The SAW potential minima create dynamic quantum dots in a 1D channel between these two regions, and are able to transport single electrons to the region of holes along the channel. Single-photon emission can therefore be generated as these electrons consecutively recombine with holes. After characterisation and optimisation in four batches of devices, clear SAW-driven charge transport and the corresponding electroluminescence (EL) can be observed on an optimised SAW-driven n-i-p junction. Time-resolved measurements have been carried out to study the dynamics of SAW-driven electrons. Time-resolved EL signals indicate that a packet of electrons is transported to the region of holes in each SAW minimum. In addition, the carrier lifetime of SAW-driven electrons in the region of holes is shown to be $\sim 100$ ps, which is much shorter than the SAW period of $860$ ps. Hence, it is promising to observe single-photon emission in the optimised device. In order to test single-photon emission, a Hanbury Brown-Twiss experimental setup has been employed to record an autocorrelation histogram of the SAW-driven EL signal at the single-electron regime. Suppression of autocorrelation coincidences at time delay $\Delta t = 0$ is evidence of photon antibunching. By fitting theoretical functions describing the SAW-driven EL signal, it is found that the second-order correlation function shows $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.39 \pm 0.05$, which is lower than the common criterion for a single-photon source $g^{(2)}(0) < 0.5$. Moreover, theoretical calculation and simulation suggest that, if a constant background signal can be filtered out, $\sim 80 \%$ of the SAW-driven EL is single-photon emission.

Pradinių klasių mokinių gebėjimai naudotis vadovėliu kaip informacijos šaltiniu / The abilities of elementary school pupils in using a coursebook as a source of information

Motiejūnaitė, Toma 06 August 2012 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Every day people and especially pupils from the elementary school confront modern technologies (internet, television, computer games) and big sources of various information. It is very important to choose what is important and necessary. For this reason we should pay a very big attention for elementary school, in order to help pupil understand which given information is necessary and which is not. For this reason these abilities should be already developed in elementary school. Children come to school willing to get a lot of necessary and useful information. For this reason a teacher of elementary school has to cherish and strengthen children wish to get new knowledge and abilities to use them properly. He has to teach them how to use coursebooks, in order children could find necessary information. Thus teachers has to teach children to read not only fiction, but also nonfiction. Since the first grade the teacher has to teach children how to look for and find the necessary information not only in the internet, but also in the coursebooks that are one of the main helpers during learning. The purpose of the research – to explore the abilities of elementary school pupils in using a coursebook as a source of information. The tasks of the research: 1. Generalize the concept of a source of information; 2. Discuss psychological education aspects of a reader in elementary school; 3. Overlook pedagogical education aspects of a reader in elementary school: • Describe reader‘s... [to full text]
