Hindering Events in Psychotherapy: A Retrospective Account from the Client’s Perspective

Burton, Lynsey 05 November 2018 (has links)
This qualitative study examined retrospective client accounts of hindering experiences that occurred during therapy. In order to explore in-depth and descriptive information about client experiences of hindering events, a structured thematic analysis methodology was used that resulted in conceptual ordering (Corbin & Strauss, 2008). Data collection was conducted through face-to-face semi-structured interviews of 9 participants who had previously experienced a hindering event. Structured thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) was used to distill themes from the collected data, where four major themes emerged from the data that were relevant to the research questions of the present study: 1) Identified Hindering Events, 2) Subjective Experience of the Event, 3) Response to the Event, 4) Handling/ Addressing the Event. Results from this study contribute to further understanding of client experiences of hindering events that occur in therapy. Implications for therapeutic organizations, therapists/ counsellors, and educators are discussed.

Desenvolvimento de um protópipo de atlas eletrônico de Unidades de Conservação para educação ambiental /

Santil, Fernando Luiz de Paula. January 2001 (has links)
Abstract: This dissertation proposes a methodology to elaborate a prototype of Electronic Atlas for Units of Preservation, focused on the environmental education. Aiming to act as a formal and/or informal agent in this education process, this prototype presents a development guided by the analysis of the information (process of cartographic communication), a checklist for an atlas elaboration, the interviews and questionnaires given to the key-informers; the visits to the study area and to other Units of Preservation and, mostly, to the users of this system: students of 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Therefore, a case study was performed in the Morro do Diabo Park, located in the west of the state of São Paulo and 12km far from the headquarters, the city of Teodoro Sampaio, in order to implement this prototype. The working stages of this dissertation followed the abstraction levels used in the software system development. This way, the purpose, the cognitive abilities of this user and the content to be dealt with, were defined. Based in this knowledge, the models were developed, both the atlas explanatory and the system conceptual ones. Finally, the implementation and the visualization of the prototype were performed in the applicatives: Arc/info, version 7.1.2, and Arcview 3.0, respectively. The developed prototype has not been evaluated yet; however, despite the fact it is not in a friendly presentation, it introduces advantages regarding dynamic representation of the geographical phenomenon, favors the teacher - student interaction in the discussions of some themes and in the availability of generating new maps, besides favoring the cognitive activities of these users. / Mestre

Using Green Messages to Cue Recycling Tendencies

Quichocho, Danielle 17 November 2017 (has links)
Recycling of common plastics is a practical way to limit the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and eventually contributes to various forms of pollution. However, statistics indicate that it is not currently a normalized, prioritized behavior. A pilot study indicated that relying only on preexisting frameworks such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model to understand consumer perceptions simply does not encompass the scope of the topic. Consumer experiences with green messages, especially in the current climate of a saturated advertising market are incredibly complex. Understanding these experiences is also currently being impeded by inconsistencies in how researchers in this field operationalize (or fail to operationalize) terms that are essential to applying results. This study takes an important step in bridging the gap between these terminological inconsistencies, as well as contextualizing results for modern consumers. This study also posits that research needs to examine the foundation of these perceptions: language and meaning. A mixed-method survey was ergo used to garner information concerning how consumers define recycling, what personal and social factors influence decisions to recycle, and what design factors make a message encouraging recycling effective. Results indicate that conceptions of recycling and convenience are underdeveloped, and message design should focus on trustworthy statistics. Future researchers in this field can then apply these initial conclusions of how language is being used to future, discourse focused studies. Future advertisers and marketers can also more effectively position their products, then connect their intended audiences to that product.

Orchestrating standard web services to produce thematic maps in a geoportal of a spatial data infrastructure

Rautenbach, Victoria-Justine 22 May 2013 (has links)
Cartography is the science and art of making maps and thematic cartography is a subsection that deals with the production of thematic maps. A thematic map portrays the distribution of features, incidents or classifications related to a specific topic. With the rapidly increasing volumes of data, thematic maps allow users to efficiently analyse data and identify trends quicker. A spatial data infrastructure (SDI) focuses on making data available and ensures data interoperability through a geoportal and associated web services for discovery, display, editing, and analysis. Implementations of web service standards by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), and the ISO/TC211, Geographic information/Geomatics enable the display, query and custom visualisation of spatial data in a geoportal. In the past, sophisticated cartographic methods have been mainly available on desktop applications, but with the advances in web mapping technology these methods have become increasingly popular on the Web. Currently, producing thematic maps using web services is a manual process that requires quite a lot of custom programming. The orchestrations of standard web services automate the process to produce thematic maps in a geoportal. It is preferable to use standard web services as opposed to customised programming; the standards provide flexibility, interoperability, and standard protocols, to name a few benefits. The goal of this research was to determine how standard OGC web services could be orchestrated to produce thematic maps within the geoportal of an SDI. To achieve this goal, an orchestrated thematic web service, named ThematicWS, was constructed from existing implementations of individual standard OGC web services, which are monolithic and interchangeable. The thematic cartographic process for producing choropleth and proportional symbol maps was investigated to model the process and obtain a set of steps. Experiments were performed to determine which existing web service standards could be used in the process. ThematicWS was developed using existing implementations of the following standards: WFS to retrieve the attribute data, WPS for the wrapping of custom functionalities (statistical processing and SLD generation), and a WMS to produce the thematic map image. The 52° North and ZOO project frameworks’ orchestration capabilities were evaluated for to determine the suitability for producing thematic maps. The evaluation showed that orchestration is possible in both frameworks. However, there are limitations in both frameworks for automatic orchestration such as the lack of semantic information and poor usability of the framework. The use of WPS services to wrap custom functionalities and to provide a standard interface has proved to be useful for the orchestration of standard web services. ThematicWS was successfully implemented based on standard web service implementations using both workflow scripting and workflow modelling. The orchestrated ThematicWS can be called and consumed by a geoportal of an SDI to produce thematic maps according to user defined parameters. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology / Unrestricted

Complaint handling that ‘works here’: the drivers and barriers of effective complaint handling in the BC local government context

Prosser, Andrew Edwin 24 January 2022 (has links)
Complaint handling is an effective tool for public sector governance. Effective complaint handling improves relationships between organizations and citizens by fostering trust and accountability, helps address gaps in public service delivery, and supports innovation in public service design. Despite these benefits, complaint handling practices at the local government level in British Columbia (BC) is often ad hoc, poorly designed, or non-existent. This thesis asks: what are the drivers and barriers for effectively handling complaints at the local government level in BC? The thesis argues that complaint handling occurs within a context of limited resources, which informs the drivers and barriers for effectively handling complaints. The thesis explores the drivers and barriers of complaint handling through a reflexive thematic analysis of interviews with senior-level local government administrators. The analysis revealed that operating in a context of limited resources led to the emergence of creative practices for handling complaints, including preventing complaints before they arise and handling complaints informally. Additionally, complaint handling is characterized by a tension between its private sector roots and public sector values like equality and fairness. The thesis concludes by making recommendations to improve complaint handling at the BC local government level. / Graduate

Parent and Child Perceived Coping Socialization during Peer Conflict: A Qualitative Study

Kwan, Janet W 14 December 2018 (has links)
Despite budding research on parent-child discrepant perceptions of a child’s psychosocial functioning, the potential difference in individual perception of coping socialization is unclear. Further, literature suggests the onset of various impulse-control disorders occurs around middle childhood. Thus, the current study used a phenomenological approach and thematic analysis to examine perspectives of coping socialization, identify intended take away messages, and examine the perceived impact of inconsistent understanding of the interaction. Results indicated both parents and children use verbal and physical cues to understand one another during coping socialization and that their lab discussion was representative of their typical interactions. Themes emerged regarding parents’ intention to help their child develop personal values, understand the impact of emotions, and provide solution driven coping strategies. Lastly, parent-child dyads endorsed negative outcomes associated with discrepant take away messages. The current study highlights the importance of continued qualitative research in discrepant parent-child perceptions of coping socialization.

The Date of 1 Chronicles With Special Reference To The Chronicler's Treatment of King David

Satterly , Mark Philip 11 1900 (has links)
<p> The purpose of this thesis is to challenge the scholarly consensus regarding the historical circumstances which led to the writing of 1 Chronicles by a close examination of the nature and function of the Chronicler's treatment of David. There has to be a reason for the stress which is placed on David by the Chronicler, especially at a time when there was no monarchy ruling in Judah. Much of the study which has been carried out on Chronicles has concentrated to a large extent on linguistic evidence. Linguistic evidence alone, however, is insufficient for drawing any solid conclusions. Thus, the attempt is being maae here to seel-: some answers on thematic evidence. This involves a close study of the Chronicler's treatment of David and the suggestion that David is to be equated with the post-exilic governor of Judah, Zerubbabel. The concentration on the Chronicler's interpretation of the figure of ravid is being used to demonstrate the possibility of reaaing 1 Chronicles as the historical expression of the :novement inspired by the prophecies of Haggai and Proto Zechariah.</p> <p> During the course of the thesis, attention is drawn to the difficulties surrounding the dating of 1 Chronicles as a result of the work of many red.actors, which is evident throughout the book. It becomes more difficult to assign the entire work, in its present form, to 8ny one period in the post-exilic era. However, despite this difficulty, a comparison of the major themes in 1 Chronicles and those in Haggai and Proto Zechariah shows that it is at least possible to date the original form of 1 Chronicles somewhere in the period of 520-515 BCE.</p> / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

McDonnell, Erika 21 November 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore how women living with an ADHD diagnosis coloured their experiences throughout life. Women continue to be excluded from clinical research and ADHD is a diagnosis that suffers from a significant male bias. As such, there is limited research about women with ADHD. This study employed a thematic analysis approach, inspired by grounded theory. Four women were recruited online after confirming they met criteria. The four women were interviewed with a semi-structured interview protocol, permitting for organic follow-up questions. Data analysis resulted in the identification of the following 4 themes: Negotiating and navigating education; Experiences of mental health; Socioemotional implications of having ADHD; and Strategies used to cope with ADHD. A total of 11 sub-themes were also identified and were correspondingly organized under appropriate main themes. This research is relevant to any professional working with women with an ADHD diagnosis or who may be querying an ADHD diagnosis.
