Integrating Big Six Skills Approach with Web-based theme learning

The purpose of the research is to construct an instruction program about integrating Big6 skills approach with web-based theme learning by using systematic instruction design model to analyze learners¡¦ background, the content of the curriculum, instruction goals and evaluation methods. The researcher designed teaching activities and learning materials based on two topics in science curriculum¡Xclimate and constellation, and furthermore took the teaching action research divided into two sections and three cycles. Through feedback, reflection and correction, the instruction activities in this program has been developed and divided into four sections¡X(1) to lead to theme learning, (2) Big6 research plan, (3) group learning, (4) result exhibition and evaluation. The instruction program was put into practice in one fifth-grade class of elementary school. After the action research, the students with different abilities showed different learning effect. The result that over 90% students said they gained satisfied achievement and over 70% passed the cognitive test in Big6 skills revealed most of the students really learned the content of the instruction program, but a few students needed the teacher and peer groups to provide much more scaffoldings and learning opportunities, especially in defining questions and finding information. After the three- cycle instruction program, the students got the learning abilities as follows-- (1) learning Bid6 systematic thinking model, (2) learning Big6 skill research method, (3) learning how to write theme reports, (4) learning how to present their products, (5) learning evaluation and reflection, (6) improving abilities to apply technology, (7) learning knowledge related to topics, and revealing the self-leading learning style under the influence of Big6 instruction. The web-based instruction environment constructed on ¡§Open network education platform system like Educities¡¨ can reduce the teacher¡¦s pressure on managing web-based instruction. The functions can cope with the need of the web-enhanced instruction, and become the important communication media between teacher and students in students¡¦ active learning section. The characteristic of the internet on multiple communication mechanism without limitation of space and time can expand the effect on active learning.

It made you feel what? Using structure to convey theme : playscript and exegesis

The exegesis and accompanying playscript 3606202 is concerned with how the structural framework of a play might be manipulated to help deliver a writer's response to global events. The exegesis looks at examples of writers who have responded to global events over the last several decades and examines as a case study the structure of Caryl Churchill's play Far Away. The writer then applies a similar structural blueprint to the writing of his play 3606202 and reflects on the outcomes such a structure achieved. As part of this reflection, the exegesis explores how the writer's desire to respond to global events led him to consider the impacts of structure on the sub-textual articulation of themes within a playscript. The exegesis concludes by detailing the findings of an experiment conducted at the reading of his play and its professional presentation within the Wharf2Loud season at the Sydney Theatre Company.

The aim of this work is to introduce dislocation as a specific syntacic process and to describe its function and use. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theorethical part, I introduce basic linguistic terms. Then, I confront the French concept of valence with the Czech concept of valence, and I delineate the term of dislocation. In the practical part, I analyse the results found in the parallel language corpus with regard to its thematic role. I also focus on Czech equivalents and translation.

The last chapter is devoted to the textual linguistics, especially to explanation of basic terms for textual analysis purpose (theme, rheme, thematic successions). In the practical part, the corpus of newspaper articles is elaborated and thi corpus is analysed.

Student Leadership Development: A Closer Look at Student Gains

The purpose of this study is to investigate student leadership development. This study will investigate if there are any differences in the estimate of gains from attending college between students who participated in a Leadership Community and a sample of non-participants. In this study, estimate of gains is defined as students' progress toward educational goals, as reflected in the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ). The estimate of gains represents a measure of growth in college. The participants in this study were recipients of a first-year $1000 merit-based scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship earned a 3.75 grade point average and were ranked in the top 10 percent of his or her high school graduating class. One hundred and seventy-two students received these scholarships in the 1998-1999 academic year. Seventy-nine of these students chose to live in a Leadership Community their first-year in college. Ninety-three of these students chose to live else where on campus. Specifically, the study is designed to examine the following hypotheses: Null Hypothesis: There will be no difference in the mean scores of the CSEQ scales (a) Estimate of gains; (b) Student acquaintances; (c) Experiences with faculty; (d) Clubs and organizations; and (e) Course learning, for LC students as compared to NLC students. Research Hypothesis: The LC students will have higher mean scores on the CSEQ scales (a) Estimate of gains; (b) Student acquaintances; (c) Experiences with faculty; (d) Clubs and organizations; and (e) Course learning, than the NLC students. This quantitative study uses the College Student Experiences Questionnaire. The participants of this study will be in their fourth semester of college. The researcher will collect data from sections of the CSEQ that correspond with the hypotheses. This study isolates the variables that are associated with student leadership development to explore student leadership development within a specific population of students. The researcher will analyze the data using descriptive statistics, as the study measures the characteristics of a population at one point in time. The researcher will determine if there are differences between scores from students who participated in the leadership community and those who did not. The researcher anticipates this study will benefit educators in evaluating the leadership development efforts on their own campuses. / Master of Arts

Very often remote peripheral locations with scarce unique attractions find it difficult to attract investment and development in many spheres including tourism. Yet some innovative entrepreneurs have taken advatage of some of these locations, using the natural resources (though not scarce) that they posses to develop themed tourism. The success of these themed establishments located in remote peripheries is renounced as they attract tourists world wide. This thesis therefore explores the fantasy and themed hotel product and location as elements of attraction in peripheral locations. Information obtained  through consultation with expersts will not only bring new knowlege to academia on the subject; it would also be useful in planning new themed destination products in the periphery since it provides inside knowledge on what to consider when setting up establishments of like characteristics.

While it may seem that "The Cap and Bells" finds its primary source in Yeats's love for Maud Gonne, the poem is also symbolic of his search for truth in occultism. In the 1880s and 90s Yeats coupled his reading of Shelley with a formal study of magic in the Golden Dawn, and the poem is a blend of Shelleyan and occult influences. The essay explores the Shelleyan/occult motif of death and rebirth through examining the poem's relation to the rituals, teachings, and symbols of the Golden Dawn. The essay examines the poem's relation to the Cabalistic Tree of Life, the Hanged Man of the Tarot, two Golden Dawn diagrams on the Garden of Eden, and the concept of Kundalini.

Dick's last resort restaurants: a unconventional theme "bad service" becomes unique experience for guests

The hospitality industry has focused on increasing customer satisfaction by offering services that are generally described as flawless, courteous, and friendly. Dick's Last Resort restaurants, however, are distinguished by intentionally staged erroneous, obnoxious, and rude services that nevertheless provide a unique experience for customers. This unconventional service theme might work for some customers but not for others. This study focuses on exploring the factors that lead to customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction at Dick's Last Resort restaurants. In addition, customer satisfaction levels are examined according to gender and location. Using the modified critical incident technique, 518 online reviews were analyzed through a categorization process. The results of this study suggested that "overall theme experience" and "employee performance" are the most important factors in determining customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. However, the findings suggest that there is no satisfaction rate difference by customers' gender and restaurant's location. The study's limitations and managerial implications for future research are discussed.
