Differences in thermal field of a city may interfere in the residential energy consumption, being its study relevant, once the energy is precondition so that essential facilities and benefits of modern life can be enjoyed. From this, this work has as objective establishment of relationships between the thermal field and residential energy consumption in the city of São Carlos-SP, for different scales of approach and based on some parameters of urban morphology. In the methodology three variables were worked: the urban morphology, the climate and energy consumption. In the specific case of variable the climate, this was studied in two scales: the scale micro-scale and mesoscale. Methodological work steps were: inventory, bibliographic review, selection of control points, climate study on micro-scale (composed by substeps: climatic data processing, calculation of sky view factor, calculation of occupancy rate and index of exploitation and calculation of the vegetation index), study of climate on meso-scale (composed by substeps: estimation of radiometric temperature, calculation of the vegetation index and multicriterium analysis), study of energy consumption and finally data analysis. The results confirmed that the morphological influence on thermal field in micro-scale and meso-scale. In the microscale the exploiting index, sky view factor and average height indicated behaviors as described in the bibliography for the average, maximum and minimum temperature data, while the occupancy rate has the behavior described in the bibliography for amplitude. In meso-scale vegetation was evaluated as a factor of biggest influence on the climate. The residential energy consumption presented coherent distribution with changes in thermal field; however, this changes shall also be related to social classes of regions, since these have varying patterns of use. Regarding geoprocessing techniques used in the methodology, it was observed that the algorithms, kriging and multicriterium analysis were useful in the research, however the vegetation index, despite being simple execution, did not provided for micro-scale the desirable results.

Thiago Cheble Alves Calza 10 February 2015 (has links)
In this work, we use the formalism of quantum field theories at finite temperature, as developed by Matsubara, applied to a Hamiltonian of N scalar fields with quartic self-interaction at N large. We get an expression in the first quantum approximation to the coeficient of the quadratic term of the Hamiltonian ("square mass"), renormalized as a function of temperature. From it, we study the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking. On the other hand, the same Hamiltonian is known as Ginzburg-Landau model in the literature of condensed matter, and allows the study of phase transitions in ferromagnetic materials. The temperature is introduced through the quadratic term in the Hamiltonian of the linear form: is proportional to the difference between the temperature and the critical temperature. This model, however, is valid only in the region of temperatures close to criticality. As a result of our calculations in the field theory at finite temperature, we observed that in a range of values around the critical temperature, the quadratic mass can be approximated by a linear relation with the temperature. This highlights the compatibility of the Ginzburg-Landau approach, in the vicinity of criticality with respect to the formalism of finite temperature field. We also discuss the effects caused by the presence of a chemical potential in the system.

Thermomechanical simulation of continuous casting process using element based finite-volume method / SimulaÃÃo termomecÃnica do processo de lingotamento contÃnuo utilizando o mÃtodo de volumes finitos baseado em elementos

Paulo Vicente de Cassia Lima Pimenta 24 November 2014 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The continuous casting technique in the last four decades has been large used for to production of semi-finished steel. The heat transfer is major mechanism and it occurs in various steps during the continuous casting. The quality of steel is directly related to the way the heat transfer occur because the thermal variations produce mechanical loads as well as contact forces which are generated through the rollers and shake of the mold. Such factors may cause defects such as fractures or cracks in the final product if the resulting stresses and strains exceed critical values. The technique must be improved in order to reduce the appearance of defects and the production time. For this a good understanding of physical phenomena involved during the solidification process is critical. The focus of this work is to apply the EbFVM (Element based Finite-Volume Method) approach to study the effects of linear tensions unidirectionally coupled with the temperature applied to continuous casting of the steel 1013D (0,3% of carbon) In the simulations we adopted some simplifications such as the Plane Strain and isotropic material. We also neglected the body forces contact with the rollers the liquid pressure on the walls of the steel ingot (ferrostatic pressure) and the convective effect. However despite of the simplifications adopted this work provides quantitative informations on the linear tensions accumulation that point out to areas of possible of cracks formations / A tÃcnica de lingotamento contÃnuo nas Ãltimas quatro dÃcadas à cada vez mais utilizada na produÃÃo de aÃo semiacabado.

Hodnocení přestupu tepla na skrápěném trubkovém svazku / Heat Transfer Evaluation on Falling Film Tube Bundle

Kracík, Petr January 2016 (has links)
Sprinkled tube bundles with a thin liquid film flowing over them are used in various technology processes where it is necessary to separate the vapour and liquid phases quickly and efficiently. The process occurs predominantly at low temperatures with a corresponding decrease of pressure around the tube bundle. Such a technology is represented for instance by an evaporator at absorption units or an evaporator for sea water desalination. In ideal conditions water boils at the whole surface of an exchanger, but in practice it must be considered that in original spots of contact between water and the exchanger wall the water will not boil at the tubes' surface but the cooling liquid will merely be heated-up. The presented dissertation thesis focuses on this issue. The objective of the thesis was to determine the heat transfer coefficient at the surface of sprinkled tube bundles of various geometries at atmospheric pressure as well as low pressure. For this purpose experiments have been carried out at tube bundles consisting of copper tubes of 12,0 mm diameter placed horizontally one above another that were heated by water. Three types of tubes (smooth, sandblasted and grooved) of four various pitches (15,0 to 30,0 mm by 5,0 mm increments) have been tested. Simultaneously individual bundles' geometries consisted of 4, 6, 8 and 10 tubes with identical surface finish. Based on the conducted experiments the mathematical model of heat transfer that involves mainly analogy criteria has been made more accurate. A temperature field at the sprinkled tube bundle surface has been scanned by a thermographic camera during the performed experiments. Influence of geometry and tube surface finish on flow mode and consequently also on heat transfer has been assessed in accordance with the compiled methodology.

Topology and Thermophoresis Characterization of Complex Polymers by Thermal Field-Flow Fractionation

Geisler, Martin 04 May 2021 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the potential of thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) for the multidetection-based analysis of polymers with complex topology to prove its capability in resolving polymer branching characteristics from measured thermophoretic properties. For that, not yet existent but necessary profound advances in the theory of ThFFF and as well, thermophoresis of branched polymers were generated to allow a full exploitation of the method in the elucidation of polymer topology. Exemplary, two different libraries of branched polymer model systems based on aliphatic-aromatic polyesters and on a new type of short chain branched polyethylene were investigated. On top, the potential of the optimized ThFFF theory was assessed in the context of crosslinked polymer architectures and shines light onto the so far controversially debated topic of electron beam irradiation effects on thermoplastic polyurethane.

The changes in the urban climate system in great cities are processes related to urban density and the different forms of use and land cover. The objective of this study was to analyze the thermal urban field and its relation to the various forms of use and land cover in a humid tropical city, specifically Joao Pessoa city, PB, Brazil. Measurements in air temperature and relative humidity were carried out in two distinct periods of three months (dry and wet seasons), using thermo-hygrometer Hobos located in nine representative areas of the city. The level of heat stress was evaluated based on Thom's discomfort index (IDT, in Portuguese), adjusted for tropical regions based on questionnaires for assessing the thermal sensation that people have in function to the parameters that determine the environment in which they live. Mann-Kendall test was used to assess the temporal trends of time series in temperature, relative humidity and IDT for the period from 1963 to 2011. The types of ground cover of each monitored point were classified into nine classes according to the percentage of vegetation coverage and permeable and impermeable materials by utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of the study indicated that the classification range of the Thom’s discomfort index is not suitable for humid tropical regions. The urban heat island is a phenomenon that occurs preferentially during the night while the maximum intensity of the temperature and relative humidity gradients are essentially diurnal phenomena. The scenarios of the thermal comfort levels indicated a strong discomfort for the 2050 and 2060 years during the dry season and uncomfortable condition during the rainy season in the 2060 year throughout the study area.

Optimalizace teplotního pole s fázovou přeměnou / Optimization of Thermal Field with Phase Change

Pustějovský, Michal January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with modelling of continuous casting of steel. This process of steel manufacturing has achieved dominant position not only in the Czech Republic but also worldwide. The solved casted bar cross-section shape is circular, because it is rarely studied in academical works nowadays. First part of thesis focuses on creating numerical model of thermal field, using finite difference method with cylindrical coordinates. This model is then employed in optimization part, which represents control problem of abrupt step change of casting speed. The main goal is to find out, whether the computation of numerical model and optimization both can be parallelized using spatial decomposition. To achieve that, Progressive Hedging Algorithm from the field of stochastic optimization has been used.

Zařízení pro měření tepelného odporu rukavic / Apparatus for measuring the thermal resistance of the gloves

Pelikán, Jakub January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with common problem health protection at work. Namely hand protection during the work in very cold environment. It’s an analysis of materials suitable for apparatus used for measuring the thermal resistance of the gloves. There was analysed a range of materials. Every single sample was tested for heat conductivity and afterwards was assessed the suitability of materials. Heat was generated by electricity. Ocured heat fields was assessed with thermocamera. After performed experiments of carbon fiber we haven’t reached any satisfying results which we could use for manufacturing of this device. On the other hand kapton film has given very interesting results which we would recommend eventually. Kapton film needs to be modify according to the method listed in the conlusion. This thesis gives us a clear overview and inspiration for additional research of this device. It finds it’s place in research facilities and companies manufacturing protective clothing.

Structure and evolution of basin and petroleum systems within a transformrelated passive margin setting : data-based insights from crust-scale 3D modelling of the Western Bredasdorp Basin, offshore South Africa

Sonibare, Wasiu Adedayo 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the crustal structure, and assesses the qualitative and quantitative impacts of crust-mantle dynamics on subsidence pattern, past and present-day thermal field and petroleum system evolution at the southern South African continental margin through the application of a multi-disciplinary and multi-scale geo-modelling procedure involving both conceptual and numerical approaches. The modelling procedure becomes particularly important as this margin documents a complex interaction of extension and strike-slip tectonics during its Mesozoic continental rifting processes. Located on the southern shelf of South Africa, the Western Bredasdorp Basin (WBB) constitutes the focus of this study and represents the western section of the larger Bredasdorp sub-basin, which is the westernmost of the southern offshore sub-basins. To understand the margin with respect to its present-day structure, isostatic state and thermal field, a combined approach of isostatic, 3D gravity and 3D thermal modelling was performed by integrating potential field, seismic and well data. Complimenting the resulting configuration and thermal field of the latter by measured present-day temperature, vitrinite reflectance and source potential data, basin-scale burial and thermal history and timing of source rock maturation, petroleum generation, expulsion, migration and accumulation were forwardly simulated using a 3D basin modelling technique. This hierarchical modelling workflow enables geologic assumptions and their associated uncertainties to be well constrained and better quantified, particularly in three dimensions. At present-day, the deep crust of the WBB is characterised by a tripartite density structure (i.e. prerift metasediments underlain by upper and lower crustal domains) depicting a strong thinning that is restricted to a narrow E-W striking zone. The configuration of the radiogenic crystalline crust as well as the conductivity contrasts between the deep crust and the shallow sedimentary cover significantly control the present-day thermal field of the study area. In all respects, this present-day configuration reflects typical characteristics of basin evolution in a strike-slip setting. For instance, the orientations of the deep crust and fault-controlled basin-fill are spatially inconsistent, thereby indicating different extension kinematics typical of transtensional pull-apart mechanisms. As such, syn-rift subsidence is quite rapid and short-lived, and isostatic equilibrium is not achieved, particularly at the Moho level. Accompanied syn-rift rapid subsidence and a heat flow peak led to petroleum preservation in the basin since the Early Cretaceous. Two additional post-rift thermal anomalies related to the Late Cretaceous hotspot mechanism and Miocene margin uplift in Southern Africa succeeded the syn-rift control on maturation. This thermal maturity of the five mature source rocks culminated in four main generation and three main accumulation phases which characterise the total petroleum systems of the WBB. The Campanian, Eocene and Miocene uplift scenarios episodically halted source maturation and caused tertiary migration of previously trapped petroleum. Petroleum loss related to the spill point of each trap configuration additionally occurs during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene and Oligocene-Early Miocene. The timing and extent of migration dynamics are most sensitive to the geological scenario that combined faulting, intrusive seal bypass system and facies heterogeneity. In fact, for models that do not incorporate facies heterogeneity, predicted past and present-day seafloor leakage of petroleum is largely underestimated. This complex interplay of generation and migration mechanisms has significant implications for charging of petroleum accumulations by multiple source rocks. Due to early maturation and late stage tertiary migration, the syn-rift source rocks particularly Mid Hauterivian and Late Hauterivian source intervals significantly control the extent of petroleum accumulation and loss in the basin. Lastly, the modelled 3D crustal configuration and Mezosoic to Cenozoic thermal regime of the WBB dispute classic uniform lithospheric stretching for the southern South African continental margin. Rather, this PhD thesis confirms that differential thinning of the lithosphere related to a transtensional pull-apart mechanism is the most appropriate for accurately predicting the evolution of basin and petroleum systems of the margin. Also, the presented 3D models currently represent the most advanced insights, and thus have clear implications for assessing associated risks in basin and prospect evaluation of the margin as well as other similar continental margins around the world.
