Designing With Climate: Using Parking Lots to Mitigate Urban Climate

Harris, Amanda M. 17 January 2005 (has links)
Urban areas are known to have different climatic conditions than their rural counterparts including higher temperatures, greater wind speeds, and increased precipitation otherwise known as urban heat islands, urban wind, and urban precipitation. These phenomena are all caused by the design and form of the city. Large amounts of impervious surface area, obtrusive buildings, and a lack of vegetation in the urban landscape all contribute to these problems. Landscape architects have the potential to mitigate urban heat islands, urban wind, and urban precipitation by understanding what causes these phenomena and knowing a few key principles by which to mitigate them. Parking lots can cover up to half of the land area in cities and offer a great opportunity to correct urban climate problems. This thesis looks at current United States parking lot ordinances to determine if and how well principles of designing with climate have been incorporated. Guidelines are then given to help in the construction of a parking lot ordinance that aims to ameliorate the city's mesoclimate. A design is then created that shows how these parking lot guidelines could be incorporated into a functional, aesthetically pleasing parking lot. / Master of Landscape Architecture

The surface energy balance and climate in an urban park and its surroundings / Markytans energibalans och klimatet i en urban park och dess omgivning

Bäckström, Erika January 2005 (has links)
The world’s growing population and the increasing urbanization has made problems related to the urban heat island phenomenon to become more pronounced and since urban parks reduce the stress produced by the urban heat island they can be powerful tools in urban climate design. The temperature near the surface in a park is determined by the energy exchanges between the surface and the air above and it is therefore necessary to understand the surface energy balance of parks to intelligently manage their thermal microclimate. The objectives of this work were to study how the energy balances differ between different surfaces inside parks and in their built-up surroundings and to relate the surface energy balances to temperature differences.</p><p>Measurements were conducted during three clear summer days in the park Humlegården located in central Stockholm. The measuring instruments were mounted on a cart, which was transported from observation site to observation site. The observation sites represented typical surfaces found in an urban park and its surroundings: one shaded and one open grass surface, one open and one shaded gravel surface and two paved surfaces representing streets running in the north-south and east-west directions respectively. The energy fluxes were calculated using air and surface temperatures, wind speed, air humidity and net radiation data.</p><p>The most pronounced differences between the shaded and open surfaces in the park was that the shaded surfaces in general had smaller energy fluxes during daytime and that they had a downward directed sensible heat flux while the open surfaces had an upward directed sensible heat flux during the day. The most significant difference between the grass and the gravel surfaces in the park was that the grass surfaces had a bigger downward directed latent heat flux during the night and a smaller ground heat flux during both day and night. The largest differences between the surfaces inside the park and those in its built-up vicinities were that the paved surfaces had a larger upward directed sensible and ground heat flux during the night than the other surfaces. During the day the north-south directed paved site had a downward directed ground heat flux that was much larger than the ground heat flux for the other sites.</p><p>The coolest site during the night was the non-shaded grass surface, which was the only site with a downward directed sensible heat flux during the night. Compared to the other nonshaded sites the open grass surface had a much smaller ground heat flux. Warmest sites during the night were the paved surfaces, which had a larger upward directed sensible and ground heat flux than the other surfaces. At the built-up sites the walls also contributed with sensible heat flux, i.e. the total sensible heat flux in the built-up area was larger than what comes from the street surface only. During the day the shaded surfaces in the park were the coolest sites. The shaded surfaces had less net radiation compared to the other non-shaded surfaces and were the only sites that had a downward directed sensible heat flux.</p>

Statistický model charakteru tepelného ostrova středoevropských měst / Statistical model of urban heat island characteristics in Central Europe

Vacík, Pavel January 2013 (has links)
Urban heat island (UHI) is a region of increased air temperature in the canopy layer and boundary layer of the atmosphere above the town or industrial agglomeration in comparison with rural surroundings. The difference in temperature increases with the size of the city. This study describes the dependence of the intensity UHI Central European cities on their size and position of their weather station. It uses a multiple linear regression model. The dependent variable Y entering the model (data from 40 cities) are UHImean and UHImax. They are calculated as difference in air temperature between the urban and the relevant rural weather station. The average intensity of the urban heat island (UHImean) is the average value of the UHI of all available data in the analyzed period (hourly measurements of air temperature [řC] for the years 1994-2012). The data are only taken from night times records between 21:00 and 4:00 UTC and on days with the average total cloud cover at the city weather station less than 0,5. The maximum intensity of the urban heat island (UHImax) is the average maximum value of the UHI per night. The data are taken under the same conditions as in the case of UHImean. Independent variables X are the size of built-up area (X1) and the position of the weather station calculated using the...

Influência das áreas verdes urbanas na temperatura e na umidade do ar em São Carlos-SP / Influence of wooded areas on air temperature and humidity in the urban environment of São Carlos - SP

Modna, Daniela 05 April 2004 (has links)
Removal of vegetation giving place to buildings and pavement involves the cancellation of many environmental services. One of them is shading effect, which avoids the air heating due to solar radiation re-emitted by surfaces. Hot and dry air promotes human discomfort and rise on incidence of respiratory diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze temperature and air humidity values, comparing data from automatic meteorological stations installed on wooded and arid areas of the city, during representative climatic episodes. Methodological procedures were based on the Dynamic Climatology principles. They allow relating the enchaining of weather patterns (at zonal scale) with differences observed in the urban sites (considering a smaller scale) promoted by human activities. So, it was possible to specify critical climatic variations to human comfort, such as great thermal amplitudes and decrease of air humidity values. Results showed smaller thermal amplitudes in wooded areas (average of 3ºC) and, in some cases, higher values of air humidity in comparison to values observed in the arid sites. These measurements reinforce the idea to improve São Carlos\' green areas, since they contribute to attenuate the uncomfortable and unhealthy climatic conditions. As a consequence, life quality and urban environment sustainability conditions will also increase. This matches with Brazilian\'s environmental laws, as well as with the desires of São Carlos\' inhabitants. The conclusions of this study will support the adoption of public policies concerned with human and environmental health.

Estudo do campo térmico da cidade de São Carlos (SP) em um episódio climático de inverno / Study of the thermal field of São Carlos (SP) in winter climatic episode

Silva, Ludimila Fabiana da 17 February 2011 (has links)
On the dynamical approach of climate, the present work aimed the study the time-space configuration of the thermal filed of the city of São Carlos-SP, within the diurnal variations and the conditions imposed by the different weather types, in order to characterize its intensity and identify the formation of urban heat islands during winter. Thus climatic data registered by three automatic stations located in distinct points of the urban network, GOES satellite images and atmospheric pressure letters at sea level were used. According to the obtained results, the urban heat island is more pronounced in the activity of Polar Atlantic air mass, with the biggest thermal differences being observed during the diurnal period. Under the conditions imposed by the Polar Atlantic mass the observed differences between the thermal fields of the nearest downtown region of São Carlos and the two distant regions were between 2.0 and 3.0 ºC.

Clima urbano da cidade de São Luís do Maranhão / Urban Climate of the City of São Luís do Maranhão

Pinheiro, Juarez Mota 14 September 2018 (has links)
The city of São Luis is the capital of the state Maranhão and its found at the Northeast Region in Brazil, its urban growth has showed exponential and this is affecting directly the energy exchanges wich affect its weather. With the goal of understand the dynamics of its urban weather and, suported in the conceptions of interrelations between atmosphere surface of urbanized morphology, it was used the methodological proposal Urban Climate System (SCU), by Monteiro (1975), aplying perceptions chanels of the proposed subsystems: physico-chemical (quality of air), hydro-meteoric (meteoric impact), thermodynamic (termic confort), added to the incorporation of the wind . With the use of methedology was possible to confirm the levels of influence that the wind and the urbanizaton have exercise in the configuration of climate dynamics in the city. The search found results that, beyond demonstrate the feasibility of methodological aplication SCU, identify the levels of atmosphereric pollution in the city of São Luís are, in the most, in acceptable levels, that is, inside the settle padrons by resolution CONAMA 03/90, wich the only exception is at the port region in the city with low impact of repercussion in the rest os the city. It was also found that the spatio-temporal distribution of the rains in São Luís and in the island of Maranhão it shows significant viability and the winds in association with the urbanization are influencing in the hydro-meteoric dynamics determining volumes of biggest rains in part of its coastal strip and in the spacial distribution that follow the wind Direction. It was also possible to conclude that the values of air temperature, beyond the levels of termal comfortin the city, are suffering negative alterations in fuction of crescent urbanization, with the appearance of higher buildings, mainly in the coastal strip, affecting the penetration of winds that are predominantly of directions NE-ENE (northeast les-northweast), and that are influencing in thermal differences between the central parto of the city and its coastal strip and, consequently, in its thermal human comfort that present much more negative in the central of city than in the coastal strip. The wind is the atmospheric element preponderant in the clamatic dynamics at the city of São Luís, Maranhão.

Análise de conforto térmico em áreas abertas no município de Ourinhos - SP / Analysis of thermal comfort in open areas in Ourinhos

Carfan, Ana Claudia 05 July 2011 (has links)
The increasing urban population and the modification of the landscape bring forth one consequence, the local climate change, developing a typical urban climate, known as urban climate. Understanding the urban climate and seek solutions to mitigate the influence of the buildings in the environment in a city is of great interest for improving the quality of life. The microclimatic models can be very useful in planning the cities. They can provide guidelines for the architectural planning, building heights, street layout and location of green areas by bringing in an increase in thermal comfort and pollutant dispersion. Ourinhos county is located in the southwestern state of Sao Paulo and is bordered by the state of Parana. It has a subtropical type climate with dry winter and rainy summer. This study aims to analyze the urban climate and thermal comfort in the city, using on this purpose the three-dimensional model ENVI-met as a main tool for simulation of meteorological variables. This model enables the researcher to analyze the temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind intensity and the thermal comfort indices PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PPD (Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) based on the configuration of the city. We carried out simulations in three areas in Ourinhos, two within the urban area and another in a suburban area. The simulations occurred at 10/06/2009, winter days in the region and 15/02/2010, the summer situation. The simulations took place at the center of the city, besides the actual situation, three different simulations, altering the structure by increasing the height of buildings, through the removal of buildings from the central block, a park with trees and creepers and by turning the ground floor of dense urban area of 76º, where the main avenue with prior oriented NNW / SSE direction is replaced by E / O. As observed, the model explains well the temperature obtained by comparison with those in the stations. Through the coefficient of determination it was found that these are significant. These studies showed that There is a strong correlation between the physical part of the city (streets, buildings and vegetation) and human thermal comfort. Summer and winter comfort situation is very different. Analyzing the comfort indices PMV and PPD in the winter, only the permeable urban area did not show any area within the comfort limits stipulated by ISO standard 7730. In summer, the dense urban area onto the actual situation and the increase of buildings and urban expansion area showed little comfort zones. The remaining areas, in both winter and summer were uncomfortable. Proposed changes made in this work were not enough to alleviate the discomfort of urban open areas.

Use of different street trees species and their effect on human thermal comfort / O uso de diferentes espécies na arborização de ruas e seu efeito para o conforto térmico humano

Baptista, Mariana Dias 29 August 2014 (has links)
The continuous transformation in urban areas has brought many problems related to the loss of environmental quality, such as the lack of trees in the streets. It is commonly understood that urban forestry influences directly on thermal comfort in urban areas, and people can actually feel the different environmental conditions between a street with and without trees in a city. That is why better management of the trees can benefit local environmental quality, and, consequently, the quality of life of its population. One of the first steps of this management is the choice of species, but few studies approach the real effect of this choice for future local environmental conditions. The present work aims at investigating the effect of using different species in urban forestry for thermal comfort in Piracicaba - Sao Paulo. In order to do so, instruments were used to measure the air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and globe temperature. These equipments were distributed along three different streets where a single species is planted. Sibipiruna, Ipê-de-El-Salvador and Tipuana were the chosen species of trees commonly used in the streets of Piracicaba. Thermal images of the measuring points and questionnaires aimed at the local people will be used to help interpreter different arrangements. All this data was applied for calculate the Universal Thermal Comfort Index (UTCI). The presence of trees influenced the climatic variables. The three areas showed significant differences between streets with and without trees, both in the dry and rainy period. The streets with trees presented lower temperature, higher humidity and lower wind speed (except in Area 3). In all cases, the trees species had positive effects on human thermal comfort index. The results can help to take choices based on the role that trees should play in a city, such as improve thermal comfort for the population.
