Friction force oscillations caused by changing properties of the contact zone between brake disc and pad are well known from various applications. Resulting effects like brake judder are known phenomena in brake technologies and in the scope of various scientific work. A new measure to potentially reduce brake torque oscillations is the active compensation with the use of the control system of a self-energizing hydraulic brake (SEHB). New in comparison to traditional disc brakes is the fact that the brake torque is measured by the pressure in an additional supporting cylinder. Thus, the brake system is able to work in brake torque control mode. Within this paper a dynamic simulation model of the SEHB is shown and evaluated with measurement data achieved from a full scale test rig for railway applications. Based on the simulation model a pressure control strategy is developed to minimize brake torque oscillations of lower frequencies. The control parameters of the simulation are transferred to the experimental setup. Finally, simulation and experimental results are compared. Future work will deal with the development of control strategies to additionally minimize brake torque oscillations of the higher dynamics.

Finite element modeling of spherical induction actuator

The thesis deals with finite element method simulations of the two-degree of freedom spherical induction actuator performed using the 2D and 3D models. In some cases non-linear magnetization curves, rotor movement and existence of higher harmonics are taken into account. The evolution of the model leading to its simplification is presented. Several rotor structures are tested, namely the one-layer, two-layers and two-layers-with-teeth rotor. The study of some rotor parameters, i.e. teeth number and size, external and internal layer thickness, in order to improve the actuator electromechanical conversion and reduce the torque ripple is performed. The influence of the rotor teeth geometrical form on the electromechanical conversion is shown. General actuator parameters such as the airgap, source current and parameters of the magnetic material are verified as well. Finally the superiority of the two-layers-with-teeth rotor structure over the one-layer and two-layers structures is confirmed.

Conception de machines à aimants permanents à haute densité de couple pour les éoliennes de forte puissance / Design of high torque density permanent magnet machine for high power wind turbine

Les directives européennes visant à produire 20% de l’énergie à base de sources renouvelables imposent aux gouvernements d’investir dans de nouveaux moyens de production. Un bilan du marché de l’énergie sera réalisé et permettra de montrer la part des énergies renouvelables dans la consommation d’énergie. Après les moyens de conversion de l’énergie hydraulique, les éoliennes sont les systèmes, utilisant une source renouvelable, les plus rencontrées. Les objectifs fixés ont conduit à s’intéresser à l’installation d’éoliennes en mer. Les contraintes spécifiques rencontrées ont poussé les acteurs du marché à développer de nouveaux systèmes et donc des alternateurs adaptés : utilisation des aimants permanents et de l’attaque directe. La modélisation des machines à aimants permanents est décrite. Une topologie classique est d’abord présentée. D’autres solutions seront ensuite étudiées dans le but d’augmenter les densités de couple. L’une d’elles est la machine à bobinage à pas fractionnaire qui permet d’éviter les enchevêtrements des têtes de bobines. D’autre part, l’utilisation de systèmes polyphasés, permettant d’augmenter la disponibilité des systèmes en autorisant des fonctionnements en modes dégradés, est un moyen intéressant afin d’être en présence de systèmes plus fiables. La démarche, qui a permis d’effectuer le choix du dimensionnement de la génératrice pour répondre au mieux à l’appel d’offre d’un client, est présentée ainsi que les résultats des essais réalisés sur les prototypes. Au final, l’éolienne qui est équipée de cet alternateur a une puissance massique qui est au moins 15% plus importante que les solutions disponibles en 2013 sur le marché. / Given the European guidelines, which consist into producing 20% of the energy from renewable sources, the governments are obliged to invest in new types of production systems. An energy market survey will show the part of renewable energy in the energy consumption. After the hydroelectric systems, the wind turbines are the most common systems using renewable sources. The current objectives have led to consider the installation of offshore wind turbine. The specific limitations led the market players to develop new systems with adapted generators: direct drive permanent magnet generator. Model of the permanent magnet machines is described. First a conventional machine topology is presented, then other solutions will be studied with the objective of increasing the torque density. One of them is the concentrated winding machines where the end winding overlapping is avoided. On the other hand, use multiphase system becomes very interesting in order to increase system reliability and work in fault tolerant modes. The strategy that was adopted for the design of the generator to fit the best the specification is also discussed as well as the results of the tests. At the end, the wind turbine equipped with this alternator, has a power density at least 15% higher than the 2013’s available solutions.

Application à la surveillance des roulements à billes / Detection and diagnostics of faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines by signal processing of control data

Les entraînements électriques à base de machine asynchrone sont largement utilisés dans les applications industrielles en raison de leur faible coût, de leurs performances et de leur robustesse. Cependant, des modes de fonctionnement dégradés peuvent apparaître durant la vie de la machine. L'une des raisons principales de ces défaillances reste les défauts de roulements à billes. Afin d'améliorer la sûreté de fonctionnement des entraînements, des schémas de surveillance peuvent être mis en place afin d'assurer une maintenance préventive. Ce travail de thèse traite de la détection et du diagnostic des défauts mécaniques et plus particulièrement des défauts de roulements dans une machine asynchrone. Généralement, une surveillance vibratoire peut être mise en place. Cette méthode de surveillance est cependant souvent chère du fait de la chaîne de mesure. Une approche, basée sur l'analyse et le traitement des courants statoriques, est alors proposée, afin de suppléer à l'analyse vibratoire. L'étude est basée sur l'existence et la caractérisation des effets des oscillations du couple de charge sur les courants d'alimentation. Un schéma de détection est alors introduit pour détecter différents types de défauts de roulements. De plus, des variables mécaniques, telles que la vitesse ou le couple, sont également reconstruites afin de fournir une indication sur la présence de défauts de roulements. Par ailleurs, un diagnostic des modulations des courants statoriques est proposé, en régime permanent et en régime transitoire, quel que soit le rapport entre les fréquences porteuse et modulante. Les méthodes étudiées sont la transformée de Hilbert, la transformée de Concordia, l'amplitude et la fréquence instantanées ainsi que la distribution de Wigner-Ville. / Asynchronous drives are widely used in many industrial applications because of their low cost, high performance and robustness. However, faulty operations may appear during the lifetime of the system. The most frequently encountered faults in asynchronous drives come from rolling bearings. To improve the availability and reliability of the drives, a condition monitoring may be implemented to favor the predictive maintenance. This Ph.D. thesis deals with detection and diagnosis of mechanical faults, particularly rolling bearings defects in induction motors. Traditionally, bearing monitoring is supervised using vibration analysis. Measuring such quantities is often expensive due to the measurement system. An other approach, based on stator current analysis, is then proposed. The characterization of load torque oscillation effects on stator currents is studied. A detection scheme is then proposed to detect several types of bearing faults. Moreover, mechanical variables, such as rotating speed or torque, are estimated in order to detect bearings defects. In addition, a diagnosis of stator currents modulations is proposed, in steady and transient state, whatever the career and modulation frequencies. Hilbert transform, Concordia transform, instantaneous amplitude and frequency are studied. The Wigner-Ville distribution is used in transient state.
