is diploma thesis deals with design concept of two-seater sports car with the main focus on chassis torsional stiffness and axle kinematics. The main idea started with some paper sketches which were later transferred to the 3D model with all the main parts (engine, differential, driver etc.) using CATIA V5 design program. Then the torsional stiffness was counted using FEM software ANSYS 12.0. Finally the axis geometry during bump/rebump movement of the wheel was simulated in MBS system ADAMS 2007.

This master thesis describes design of frame construction of Formula Student car. The objective was to reduce weight and increase the torsional stiffness against to last version of the car. Next objective was to prove advantages of alternative frame. This had been achieved by gradual transformation of standard design of frame to alternative with the usage of FSAE alternative frame rules. The weight was reduced by 20% and torsional stiffness was increased by 34% thanks to FEM simulation and sophisticated changes of alternative frame design.

This thesis deals with the measurement of the torsional stiffness of the frame using Tritop system. There is described development of the frame due to the complexity of torsional stiffness. Further there is outlined a brief overview of the types of measurement and the effect of torsional stiffness on the driving behavior of the vehicle. The aim of the work is to develop a method for measuring torsional stiffness of the vehicle Formula Student and from the results of repeated measurements to assess the accuracy and repeatability of measurements.

Aplikace sendvičové konstrukce na formulový vůz / Sandwich structure application on the formula car

The master thesis describes application of a sandwich construction for Formula Student car. It will replace the current tubular space frame according to FSAE rules. The introduction is focused on the information of international Formula Student competition, including TU Brno Racing Team. Then there are important rules for the construction of frames and composite monocoques. For the selected production technology are found strength properties of face sheets made of carbon and hybrid fibres. Another part of thesis deals with the design of the sandwich panel using analytical calculation to determine the bending stiffness. On the basis of these proposals are made three-point bending and shear tests. Using of FEM simulation is detected torsional stiffness of the tubular space frame and the monocoque concept from the proposed sandwich panels. The conclusion is devoted to a summary of the important information and possible monocoque manufacturing process.

I-girder Composite Bridges with Lateral Bracing : Improved load distribution

This thesis deals with the subject of lateral bracing between the bottom flanges of I-girder composite bridges. The focus is on the impact of adding lateral bracing on existing bridges, as well as on new bridges. Experience and knowledge from bridge projects around the world are investigated and implemented in the evaluation of the research subject. Many existing bridges are in need of being strengthened or replaced, due to the increased traffic volume and heavier traffic loads. Different approaches can be used to prolong the lifetime of existing bridges. The approach is different depending on the cause, but for increasing the lifetime regarding fatigue some of the most suitable options are described in this thesis. A proposed concept is presented, in this thesis, along with some research questions to be answered. The use of lateral bracings in composite bridges varies between different parts of the world. In one country it can be a requirement/common praxis for long span composite bridges with two I-girders, in other countries there are no requirements of using them. Some parts of these regulations and requirements can be traced back to the tradition in both manufacturing and construction of this type of bridges. This thesis investigates how lateral bracing is used around the world to distribute eccentric loads between primary longitudinal structural members, provide resistance to lateral loads, and to permit an existing two-girder structural system to be retrofitted to behave similarly to an often more expensive closed steel box girder. Furthermore, several case studies have been conducted to investigate the impact on the structural behavior of composite bridges where a lateral bracing is implemented in the structure. The results from these case studies are presented in the thesis and show the advantages of the quasi-box section for which the lateral bracing is closing the composite cross section. By making the I-girder composite cross section acting more like a box-section, the distribution of eccentric loads between the girders is improved. The impact on longitudinal stresses from traffic loads and the additional effects on internal sectional parts are also evaluated and discussed. Furthermore, proposals of the connection design for lateral bracings in existing bridges are suggested. Finally, conclusions from the results are stated.
