An LTE implementation based on a road traffic density model

The increase in vehicular traffic has created new challenges in determining the behavior of performance of data and safety measures in traffic. Hence, traffic signals on intersection used as cost effective and time saving tools for traffic management in urban areas. But on the other hand the signalized intersections in congested urban areas are the key source of high traffic density and slow traffic. High traffic density causes the slow network traffic data rate between vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure. To match up with the emerging technologies, LTE takes the lead with good packet delivery and versatile to changes in the network due to vehicular movements and density. This thesis is about analyzing of LTE implementation based on a road traffic density model. This thesis work is aimed to use probability distribution function to calculate density values and develop a real traffic scenario in LTE network using density values. In order to analyze the traffic behavior, Aimsun simulator software has been used to represent the real situation of traffic density on a model intersection. For a realistic traffic density model field measurement were used for collection of input data. After calibration and validation process, a close to realty results extracted and used a logistic curve of probability distribution function to find out the density situation on each part of intersection. Similar traffic scenarios were implemented on MATLAB based LTE system level simulator. Results were concluded with the whole traffic scenario of 90 seconds and calculating the throughput at every traffic signal time and section. It is quite evident from the results that LTE system adopts the change of traffic behavior with dynamic nature and allocates more bandwidth where it is more needed.

The macroscopic fundamental diagram in urban network: analytical theory and simulation

The Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) is a diagram that presents a relationship between the average flow (production) and the average density in an urban network. Ever since the existence of low scatter MFD in urban road network was verified, significant efforts have been made to describe the MFD quantitatively. Due to the complexity of the traffic environment in urban networks, an accurate and explicit expression for the MFD is not yet developed and many recent research efforts for MFD rely on computer simulations. On a single corridor, an analytical approximation model for the MFD exists. However, this thesis expanded this theory in two directions. First, we specialize the method for models with equal road length on the corridor, which greatly reduces the complexity of the method. We introduce the adoption of seven straight cuts in approximation. Computer simulations are conducted and show a high compatibility with the approximated results. However the analytical approximation can only be applied with the assumption of constant circulating vehicles in the system without turnings and endogenous traffics. Secondly, we show that turnings and endogenous traffic can bring various impact on the shape of the MFD, the capacity, the critical density, the variance in density and cause a phenomenon of clustered traffic status along the MFD curve. Furthermore, the simulation using stochastic variables reveals that the variance in turning rates and endogenous traffic don’t have significant impact on the MFD. This discovery enables studies to focus on scenarios with deterministic parameters for those factors. While traditional objective of engineering for network is to maximize capacity and widen the range for the maximum capacity, our results indicate that traffic stability at the maximum performance is poor if the system does not stay constantly in equilibrium status. This thesis provides insights into the factors that affect the shape of the MFD by analytical approximation and simulation.

The aim of this thesis is the comparison of transport infrastructure in the Czech and Slovak Republics, focusing on road and rail transport. Work includes a description and analysis of the current state in terms of quality, structure and length of road and rail networks. The performance indicators of passenger and freight transport are evaluated and compared, including their expected development. Conclusions are made on the basis of data from the last 5 years. The current situation is also evaluated using a SWOT analysis, which highlights the most important strengths and weaknesses and also significant opportunities and threats. In conclusion, based on the comparison and SWOT analysis priorities and recommendation are set to improve the current situation in order to create a quality and competitive transport network.

Evaluation of drivers\' behavior performing a curve under mental workload / Avaliação do comportamento dos condutores para realizar uma curva sob distração mental

Driving under distraction may lead drivers to wrong actions that can result in serious accidents. The objective of this thesis was to apply a driving simulator to verify variations in drivers\' behavior while driving. Behavior to drive on a curve was measured by variation in drivers\' speed profile in a virtualized highway. The comparison was performed between two identical simulations, one involving drivers distracted with a mental workload, and other in which they were full aware of driving task. 54 volunteer drivers took part in this study, which was divided into 4 stages. 17 drivers performed the distraction test known as PASAT, and results showed that distracted drivers did not recognize the beginning of the curve and drove through it at speeds higher than those when they were fully aware. Moreover, driving performance was increased when drivers were aware of driving, thereby hitting high speeds in tangents, but perceiving curves in advance to reduce acceleration. This study confirms that driving simulators are beneficial in discovering drivers\' behavior exposed to activities that could be highly risky if driving in real situations. / A distração durante a atividade de direção pode levar o condutor de veículos automotores a cometer falhas, que podem ocasionar até mesmo acidentes graves. Este estudo aborda a utilização de simuladores de direção para verificar variações no comportamento de motoristas ao realizar a atividade de direção, distraídos ou com plena atenção na condução do veículo. O comportamento é medido pela variação no perfil de velocidade dos condutores para desenvolver uma curva considerada perigosa em uma rodovia simulada em ambiente virtual. A variação de velocidade deste perfil é comparada entre duas simulações idênticas, onde em uma delas os condutores estão distraídos com um teste que proporciona estresse mental e, na outra, estão com plena atenção à direção. 54 condutores fizeram parte deste estudo dividido em 3 etapas. 17 participantes realizaram o teste de distração conhecido como PASAT, e a análise dos resultados mostram que, distraídos, os condutores não perceberam o início da curva e desenvolveram velocidades maiores durante seu trajeto. Além disso, quando estavam com plena atenção à atividade de direção, o desempenho dos condutores foi melhor, atingindo velocidades maiores nas tangentes, mas percebendo as curvas antecipadamente e reduzindo suas velocidades antes de iniciar esses trechos.

The master thesis expresses the opinion on application of the Free Flight concept in European Airspace. In the beginning, the reason and the circumstances for concept application are characterized from both theoretical and practical approach. Afterwards, the key technology elements are defined as well as the ideal approach for developing them. Especially system ASAS was a subject of the deep investigation. Then the system ADS-B is introduced with all related issue from a performance point of view. Finally, the main factors affecting the capacity of the ASAS system in specific area of Airspace are investigated.

Cognitive radio performance optimisation through spectrum availability prediction

The federal communications commission (FCC) has predicted that, under the current regulatory environment, a spectrum shortage may be faced in the near future. This impending spectrum shortage is in part due to a rapidly increasing demand for wireless services and in part due to inefficient usage of currently licensed bands. A new paradigm pertaining to wireless spectrum allocation, known as cognitive radio (CR), has been proposed as a potential solution to this problem. This dissertation seeks to contribute to research in the field of CR through an investigation into the effect that a primary user (PU) channel occupancy model will have on the performance of a secondary user (SU) in a CR network. The model assumes that PU channel occupancy can be described as a binary process and a two state Hidden Markov Model (HMM) was thus chosen for this investigation. Traditional algorithms for training the model were compared with certain evolutionary-based training algorithms in terms of their resulting prediction accuracy and computational complexity. The performance of this model is important since it provides SUs with a basis for channel switching and future channel allocations. A CR simulation platform was developed and the results gained illustrated the effect that the model had on channel switching and the subsequently achievable performance of a SU operating within a CR network. Performance with regard to achievable SU data throughput, PU disruption rate and SU power consumption, were examined for both theoretical test data as well as data obtained from real world spectrum measurements (taken in Pretoria, South Africa). The results show that a trade-off exists between the achievable SU throughput and the average PU disruption rate. Significant SU performance improvements were observed when prediction modelling was employed and it was found that the performance and complexity of the model were influenced by the algorithm employed to train it. SU performance was also affected by the length of the quick sensing interval employed. Results obtained from measured occupancy data were comparable with those obtained from theoretical occupancy data with an average percentage similarity score of 96% for prediction accuracy (using the Viterbi training algorithm), 90% for SU throughput, 83% for SU power consumption and 71% for PU disruption rate. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted
