Finite element modelling of smart TRIP steel sensors and systems.

Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels undergo a phase transformation when subjected to high levels of mechanical strain. This transformation from a paramagnetic austenitic parent phase to a ferromagnetic martensitic phase is irreversible and the resultant magnetic properties may therefore be used as a measure of strain history. The transformation behaviour of TRIP steels has been recognised as a potential smart characteristic and various proposals have appeared aimed at producing a structure that performs its primary structural function as well a strain sensing function simultaneously. However the strain induced nature of the transformation implies that transformation will occur in areas of high stress concentration and therefore engineered stress concentration features will be required to provide a consistent measure of the changes in the magnetic properties of the material as a function of applied load. In order to predict the performance of smart TRIP steel sensors, an analysis method capable of quantifying the effectiveness of a component in its dual role as structure and sensor is needed. The thesis addresses the development of a methodology for correlating the changing magnetic permeability of TRIP steel sensors and structures with martensitic transformation behaviour. The prediction of the deformation behaviour including transformation is implemented by considering a mechanical analysis based on the finite element method and a constitutive model incorporating strain-induced martensitic transformation kinetics. .Extensions to the model which allow for a wide range of deformation rates and temperatures are also discussed. In order to demonstrate the application of the methodology, an analysis of a simple tensile element used in strain measurement applications is presented. The analysis also includes the effect of temperature on the performance of the sensor. An analysis of a design proposal for a smart aircraft bolt is also included to investigate the effects of geometry, particularly engineered stress concentrations, and sensor placement. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

The work contained herein is in pursuance of the Development of the SMART aircraft bolt. Failure of the bolt in the aircraft wing is taken for granted in the project, and the consequent repairs are presently very costly. The SMART material investigated in this work is the TRIP steel, and any reference to SMART material, in this work, shall at all time mean TRIP steel. Investigation of the stresses pertaining to bolts in general is carried out, based on the bolt theories and using the finite element analysis. An optimal bolt based on impact resistance only has also been suggested. Metallurgical behaviour of materials similar to TRIP materials is also investigated, including a section dedicated only to TRIP steels. TRANSFORMATIONS, BIOAVAILABILITY AND TOXICITY OF MANUFACTURED ZnO NANOMATERIALS IN WASTEWTER

In order to properly evaluate the ecological and human health risks of ZnO Manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) released to the environment, it is critical to understand the likely transformation products in the wastewater treatment process and in soils receiving biosolids. To address this critical knowledge gap, we examined the transformation reactions of 30 nm ZnO MNMs in single component and multi-component systems, with phosphate and natural organic matter (NOM). We also assessed the influence of nano ZnO transformation on the bioavailability, and toxicity of ZnO transformation products to Triticum aestivum. The data revealed that ZnO MNMs react with phosphate at concentrations expected in wastewater and transform into two distinct morphological/structural phases. A micron scale crystalline zinc phosphate phase (hopeite), and a nano-sized phase that likely consists of a ZnO core with a Zn3(PO4)2 rich shell. Presence of NOM reduces particle aggregation and enhances stability, regardless of the sequence of ligands addition in the aging scenarios. The presence of phosphate and NOM also altered the bioavailability and reduced the toxicity of the ZnO MNMs to Triticum aestivum.

Plusieurs familles de fonctions spéciales de plusieurs variables, appelées fonctions d'orbites, sont définies dans le contexte des groupes de Weyl de groupes de Lie simples compacts/d'algèbres de Lie simples. Ces fonctions sont étudiées depuis près d'un siècle en raison de leur lien avec les caractères des représentations irréductibles des algèbres de Lie simples, mais également de par leurs symétries et orthogonalités. Nous sommes principalement intéressés par la description des relations d'orthogonalité discrète et des transformations discrètes correspondantes, transformations qui permettent l'utilisation des fonctions d'orbites dans le traitement de données multidimensionnelles. Cette description est donnée pour les groupes de Weyl dont les racines ont deux longueurs différentes, en particulier pour les groupes de rang $2$ dans le cas des fonctions d'orbites du type $E$ et pour les groupes de rang $3$ dans le cas de toutes les autres fonctions d'orbites. / Several families of multivariable special functions, called orbit functions, are defined in the context of Weyl groups of compact simple Lie groups/Lie algebras. These functions have been studied for almost a century now because of their relation to characters of irreducible representations of Lie algebras, their symmetries and orthogonalities. Our main interest is the description of discrete orthogonality relations and their corresponding discrete transforms which allow the applications of orbit functions in the processing of multidimensional data. This description is provided for the Weyl group of different lengths of root, in particular groups of rank 2 for so-called $E-$orbit functions and of rank 3 for all the other families of special functions.

Role of Cryptographic Welch-Gong (WG-5) Stream Cipher in RFID Security

The purpose of this thesis is to design a secure and optimized cryptographic stream cipher for passive type Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags. RFID technology is a wireless automatic tracking and identification device. It has become an integral part of our daily life and it is used in many applications such as electronic passports, contactless payment systems, supply chain management and so on. But the information carried on RFID tags are vulnerable to unauthorized access (or various threats) which raises the security and privacy concern over RFID devices. One of the possible solutions to protect the confidentiality, integrity and to provide authentication is, to use a cryptographic stream cipher which encrypts the original information with a pseudo-random bit sequence. Besides that RFID tags require a resource constrained environment such as efficient area, power and high performance cryptographic systems with large security margins. Therefore, the architecture of stream cipher provides the best trade-off between the cryptographic security and the hardware efficiency. In this thesis, we first described the RFID technology and explain the design requirements for passive type RFID tags. The hardware design for passive tags is more challenging due to its stringent requirements like power consumption and the silicon area. We presented different design measures and some of the optimization techniques required to achieve low-resource cryptographic hardware implementation for passive tags. Secondly, we propose and implement a lightweight WG-5 stream cipher, which has good proven cryptographic mathematical properties. Based on these properties we measured the security analysis of WG-5 and showed that the WG-5 is immune to different types of attacks such as algebraic attack, correlation attack, cube attack, differential attack, Discrete Fourier Transform attack (DFT), Time-Memory-Data trade-off attack. The implementation of WG-5 was carried out using 65 nm and 130 nm CMOS technologies. We achieved promising results of WG-5 implementation in terms of area, power, speed and optimality. Our results outperforms most of the other stream ciphers which are selected in eSTREAM project. Finally, we proposed RFID mutual authentication protocol based on WG-5. The security and privacy analysis of the proposed protocol showed that it is resistant to various RFID attacks such as replay attacks, Denial-of-service (DoS) attack, ensures forward privacy and impersonation attack.

Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920) was one of the world's greatest mathematical geniuses. He work extensively in a branch of mathematics called "q-series". Around 1913, he found an important formula which now is known as Ramanujan's 1ψ1summation formula. The aim of this thesis is to investigate Ramanujan's 1ψ1summation formula and explore its applications to number theory and combinatorics. First, we consider several classical important results on elliptic functions and then give new proofs of these results using Ramanujan's 1ψ1 summation formula. For example, we will present a number of classical and new solutions for the problem of representing an integer as sums of squares (one of the most celebrated in number theory and combinatorics) in this thesis. This will be done by using q-series and Ramanujan's 1ψ1 summation formula. This in turn will give an insight into how Ramanujan may have proven many of his results, since his own proofs are often unknown, thereby increasing and deepening our understanding of Ramanujan's work.
