While this analysis of the Old, Middle, and Early Modern English translations of De Consolatione Philosophiandamp;aelig; provides a brief reception history and an overview of the critical tradition surrounding each version, its focus is upon how these renderings present particular moments that offer the consolation of eternity, especially since such passages typify the work as a whole. For Boethius, confused and conflicting views on fame, fortune, happiness, good and evil, fate, free will, necessity, foreknowledge, and providence are only capable of clarity and resolution to the degree that one attains to knowledge of the divine mind and especially to knowledge like that of the divine mind, which alone possesses a perfectly eternal perspective. Thus, as it draws upon such fundamentally Boethian passages on the eternal Prime Mover, this study demonstrates how the translators have negotiated linguistic, literary, cultural, religious, and political expectations and forces as they have presented their own particular versions of the Boethian vision of eternity. Even though the text has been understood, accepted, and appropriated in such divergent ways over the centuries, the Boethian vision of eternity has held his Consolations arguments together and undergirded all of its most pivotal positions, without disturbing or compromising the philosophical, secular, academic, or religious approaches to the work, as readers from across the ideological, theological, doctrinal, and political spectra have appreciated and endorsed the nature and the implications of divine eternity. It is the consolation of eternity that has been cast so consistently and so faithfully into Old, Middle, and Early Modern English, regardless of form and irrespective of situation or background. For whether in prose and verse, all-prose, or all-verse, and whether by a Catholic, a Protestant, a king, a queen, an author, or a scholar, each translation has presented the texts central narrative: as Boethius the character is educated by the figure of Lady Philosophy, his eyes are turned away from the earth and into the heavens, moving him and his mind from confusion to clarity, from forgetfulness to remembrance, from reason to intelligence, and thus from time to eternity.

Student Number : 9311414P - MA research report - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / This research report compares the translations of terminology used by radio and television to designate specific concepts. It examines the different strategies adopted by television in the translation of specific terms on the one hand and compares them with those adopted by radio and other. Terms are grouped into two categories; (1) phrasal terms in the source language and (2) established words in the source language. The study examines the semantic shifts in meaning in the translation versions of each of the terms discussed. In studying the patterns of term formation adopted my media, the study focuses on the three approaches by Sager (1990) in the creation of new designations. The first focuses on the use of existing resources, the second on the modification of resources and the third on the creation of totally new linguistic entities. The study challenges the theoretical terminological principle that one designation corresponds to one concept and uses television and radio translations to substantiate this argument. The research is qualitative and does not make any general conclusion about term usage on radio and television. It does however compare the strategies employed by each medium and makes certain recommendations concerning future translations on radio and television.

Para tornar isso possível, foi necessário fazer o levantamento da fortuna crítica, a partir de estudos que permitissem a compreensão da ode enquanto gênero ligado ao arquigênero, vislumbrado sob o conceito "Lírico". Entendendo-se que a transposição de uma forma antiga para as literaturas vernáculas só se torna possível através da tradução, optou-se por delimitar o corpus de trabalho para as onze odes de Horácio que Filinto Elísio traduziu e que, juntamente com as odes de sua autoria, compõem o maior corpus de odes produzidas no Século das Luzes. O estudo de tradução levado a cabo se ancorou no referencial teórico encontrado nos escritos de Henri Meschonnic, Haroldo de Campos e Antony Pym. Evidentemente, o estudo proposto não se limitou aos referenciais teóricos necessários para o desvelamento da prática tradutória do poeta luso, sem que antes se resgatasse o peso de suas ideias estéticas, do contexto histórico-artístico em que ele se inseriu e da recepção de suas ideias e obras na história da literatura portuguesa. Para hacerla posible, fue necesario investigar el acervo crítico acerca del tema, a partir de estudios que permitiesen la comprensión de la oda como género vinculado al archigénero, vislumbrado bajo el concepto "Lírico". Comprendiendo que la transposición de una forma antigua a las literaturas vernáculas sólo se hace posible a través de la traducción, se optó por delimitar el corpus de trabajo para las once odas de Horacio que Filinto Elísio tradujo y que junto a las odas de su autoría componen el mayor corpus de odas producidas en el Siglo de las Luces. El estudio de traducción llevado a cabo se ancló en el referencial teórico encontrado en los escritos de Henri Meschonnic, Haroldo de Campos y Antony Pym.
