Understanding Substance Use Treatment Motivation: The Role of Social Network Pressure in Emerging AdulthoodGoodman, Ilana R. 11 December 2009 (has links)
Research has shown that social pressure is related to treatment motivation and plays an important role in treatment engagement in adults with problematic substance use. Despite the shifts in autonomy and decision-making in emerging adulthood, the factors affecting treatment motivation (e.g., readiness to comply with treatment) and motivation to change (e.g., problem recognition and taking steps towards change) during this period have been largely ignored. In this study, 134 youth presenting to an outpatient substance abuse program completed questionnaires investigating substance use history, mental health, social pressure to reduce use and enter treatment, and motivation. Results indicated that peer pressure accounted for significant variance in internal positive and internal negative treatment motivation. Family pressure was related only to external treatment motivation. Neither social network source had a significant impact on motivation to change. Limitations, directions for future research and treatment implications are discussed.

Cinematherapy For Alcohol Dependent PatientsPur, Ipek Guzide 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of the cinematherapy technique on the treatment of alcohol dependent patients. In terms of change, selfefficacy,
decisional balance and motivation levels of participants were examined. 94 alcoholic patients from a state hospital, and 14 members of Alcoholics Anonymous&rsquo / Istanbul groups participated in the study. Participants were either inpatients in the dependence treatment center, or alcohol dependent patients who had been clean and sober for various periods of time. The cinematherapy technique was applied as an
adjunct to alcohol dependence treatment. It included the presentation of a movie with an alcohol dependence theme followed by an elaboration session. Participants in the experimental group received two sessions of cinematherapy. On the other hand, control group A participants watched one movie unrelated with alcohol dependence. It was followed by an elaboration session with a non-alcoholic theme. Control group B participants watched two movies unrelated with alcohol dependence. Any elaboration session was not made with control group B participants. Decisional balance, self-efficacy, treatment motivation and stages of change were used as the main outcome measures in the pre-treatment and posttreatment assessments. Since the experimental and control groups sample sizes were small, non-parametric tests were used in data analysis. According to results, cons of alcohol and self-efficacy increased for the overall sample after cinematherapy sessions. In addition, the cinematherapy group showed higher identification than the control groups. Stages of change differences were gained for pros of alcohol use and self-efficacy in line with literature.

Männlichkeit und Verleugnung von Hilfsbedürftigkeit nach berufsbedingten Traumata (Polizei, Feuerwehr, Rettungspersonal) / Masculinity and Avoidance of Help-Seeking after Job-Related Trauma (Police, Firefighters, Rescue Teams)Pieper, Georg, Maercker, Andreas 11 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Persons in the predominately male domains of high-risk occupational groups (police, fire department, rescue teams, prison guards) often show difficulties in accepting psychological help after traumatization. The paper presents case reports and conceptual discussion of the relationship between masculinity and treatment motivation. Clinical experiences on male-specific complications of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a high risk profile of male work-related trauma victims (‘alphaman’) are discussed. Theoretical discussion furthermore includes social cognitive theories of masculinity and of development of PTSD. The paper concludes with suggestions for interventions relevant to the outlined problems. / Dieser Beitrag ist mit Zustimmung des Rechteinhabers aufgrund einer (DFG-geförderten) Allianz- bzw. Factors associated with retention and completion in substance abuse treatment among historically disadvantaged communities in Cape TownPasche, Sonja Christine January 2009 (has links)
Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / Cape Town is suffering from high rates of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems.
Despite the need for effective treatment, there are insufficient AOD treatment facilities available, with barriers to AOD treatment being particularly pronounced among historically disadvantaged communities (HDCs). In addition, the high drop-out rate of patients from AOD treatment, and the finding that retention in treatment is predictive of positive outcomes, increases the necessity of retaining people who enter AOD treatment. This study therefore aimed to identify those patient-level factors impacting on the successful completion of and retention in AOD treatment. In particular, the study aimed to describe the relationship between treatment process factors (therapeutic alliance, motivation, treatment satisfaction, social support), demographic and psychological variables, and treatment completion and retention. The Texas Christian University (TCU) Treatment Model, which conceptualises the AOD treatment process, provided the theoretical framework for the study. Using a quantitative design, secondary data analysis
was conducted on a section of data that was originally collected by the Medical Research Council (MRC) via a cross-sectional survey. The sample consisted of 434 individuals from HDCs who had previously entered AOD treatment. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the therapeutic alliance, treatment satisfaction, abstinence-specific social support and depression were significant predictors of treatment completion, while race, therapeutic alliance, abstinence-specific social support and anxiety were predictive of the time spent in treatment. These predictors were positively associated with treatment completion and time in treatment. Black Africans spent significantly less days in treatment than Coloured individuals, although both groups were equally likely to complete treatment. The results suggest that by strengthening the therapeutic alliance, social support and treatment satisfaction, treatment completion and retention can be improved. This can be achieved by training, ongoing monitoring of these factors during treatment, and greater involvement of supportive social networks in a patient’s recovery.
The findings also point towards the need for improved service delivery for Black
Africans, who confront many barriers to accessing inpatient AOD treatment.
