How does organizational culture affect organizational and individual trust? - Actiona Group in Russia

Aim: This study aims to explore how organizational culture affect organizational- and individual trust, and how the relationship is between the three constructs. Method: Qualitative method is used for this case study. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with ten representatives of the targeted company. Respondents hold different positions in the organization, including top- and middle managers, and line employees. The data was analyzed thematically according to the three main points of research questions such as organizational culture, organizational trust and individual trust. Results and Conclusions: Organizational culture and values are set by owners and top management of the company but are influenced by national culture. By using national culture and individual characteristics, and in lining them with organizational culture, organizations can enhance both profit and image. Employee motivation and commitment are enhanced as a result of a high level of trust. With the help of informal control, organizational trust also affects trust at an individual level. However, it is important to employ people whose values match the organizations. Suggestions for future research: This study is limited to one company in Russia. For future research, we recommend a longitudinal study of several companies to compare them overall, to find the impact of trust on each organizational culture and how it affects employees and business in the long term conditions. Another research approach could be to compare organizational cultures of the companies from different countries to investigate the advantages and differences of factors of success. Contribution of the thesis: The main contribution is that certain organizational culture affects trust in the organization. Development of trust as a part of organizational internal culture provides certain benefits such as efficiency, innovation, results, motivation and commitment. Trust as a part of organizational culture provides a foundation that enables the organization to develop and adapt to the market. It is important to recruit people with similar values as the company to be able to develop the desired organizational culture. The Impact of Violence on Interpersonal and Institutional Trust : Evidence from Mexico

Beyond the material consequences, violence can have a great psychological impact on the individual. Violence can cause institutional and interpersonal distrust, and in turn harm economic growth and political stability. As of today, there is more knowledge about the consequences of trust than its determinants, and longitudinal studies are scarce. This paper exploits survey data and disaggregated data on violence from Mexico, a country which since 2007 has experienced a rapid increase in violence. With the use of a Linear Fixed Effects Model, I analyse the impact of municipal level violence on trust in crime-related institutions and in other individuals. I find a significant relationship, robust across different model specifications, between exposure to battles and trust in the federal, state, and municipal police forces. This positive effect is also found for battles involving police forces. Furthermore, I find evidence of a negative relationship between riots and interpersonal trust.

Generalized trust and fertility : A micro-level analysis of social trust and its relationship to fertility

Are individuals that trust strangers more likely to have children, and can they be expected to have more children than their lower trusting counterparts? This article assesses two perspectives that hold this as a likely outcome. One perspective has trusting individuals as more likely to hand over the care of their children to strangers, thereby reconciling work and family dilemmas for women. In the Five-Factor Model of Personality, trusting individuals increase their odds of parenthood through several paths, including better relationship quality and outward behavior. The two perspectives also suggest different macro-level conditions for the associations. The former maintains that trust is more important for fertility in high trusting countries and where women have a high share of highly educated. The latter holds that trust is more important in low trusting countries. It also suggests that men benefit more from being trusting. This article tests these two perspectives quantitatively using a sample of eight countries that participated in the Generations and Genders Survey. The method being logistic regression with a longitudinal design. The second perspective found most support from the analysis. A positive significant association between trust and the likelihood of parenthood was more clearly found among male respondents. This result suggests that researchers on fertility and personality can be recommended to include generalized trust in their statistical models.

Having a large amount of social and institutional trust is a goal for big democratic states like Sweden. Women have more confidence in the Swedish judiciary, but the trust can vary along different class variables such as gender, age, education level, income level, and political opinion. Using data from the European Social Survey, this paper is a quantitative study of those various class factors in connection to women's trust in the judiciary and the police. By analyzing the variables in both a bivariate standard linear regression and a multivariate regression analysis, this thesis's purpose is to see how the variables collaborate. The data were analyzed with Putnam and Rothstein's theory about social trust, institutional trust, and Bourdieu's class theory.  Results show that not all variables affect a woman's trust in the judiciary and police. Their income and education level have a strong significant correlation with a woman's trust in the judiciary. Only the income variable has a significant correlation with confidence for the police when all variables are used in the analysis. The other variables have little to no correlation with the dependent variables and are not significant.

W3 Trust Model (W3TM): a trust-profiling framework to assess trust and transitivity of trust of web-based services in a heterogeneous web environment

The growth of eCommerce is being hampered by a lack of trust between providers and consumers of Web-based services. While Web trust issues have been addressed by researchers in many disciplines, a comprehensive approach has yet to be established. This thesis proposes a conceptual trust-profiling framework???W3TF???which addresses issues of trust and user confidence through a range of new user-centred trust measures???trust categories, trust domains, transitivity of trust, fading factor analysis, standalone assessment, hyperlinked assessment and relevance assessment. While others now use the concept of transitivity of trust, it was first introduced by this research in 1998. The thesis also illustrates how W3TF can narrow the gap/disconnection between the hierarchical PKI trust environment and the horizontal Web referral environment. The framework incorporates existing measures of trust (such as Public Key Infrastructure), takes account of consumer perceptions by identifying trust attributes, and utilises Web technology (in the form of metadata), to create a practical, flexible and comprehensive approach to trust assessment. The versatility of the W3TF is demonstrated by applying it to a variety of cases from trust literature and to the hypothetical case study that provided the initial stimulus for this research. It is shown that the framework can be expanded to accommodate new trust attributes, categories and domains, and that trust can be ???weighed??? (and therefore evaluated) by using various mathematical formulae based on different theories and policies. The W3TF addresses identified needs, narrows the gaps in existing approaches and provides a mechanism to embrace current and future efforts in trust management. The framework is a generic form of trust assessment that can help build user confidence in an eCommerce environment. For service providers, it offers an incentive to create websites with a high number of desired trust attributes. For consumers, it enables more reliable judgments to be made. Hence, Web trust can be enhanced.

It is generally accepted that innovation of product, services and/or technologies, whether gradual or radical, is a source of competitive advantage for new and existing businesses. Adapting to changes in a volatile global market environment is a prerequisite for the sustainability of any business. The primary objective of this study is to explore the relationship between the cognitive, affective, lateral and vertical dimensions of interpersonal trust and organisational innovativeness within the Sasol Polymers, Chlor Alkali Business. In order to achieve the abovementioned objective, a literature review was conducted and a quantitative study undertaken using a target group of 189 individuals within the business. Primary data collection was undertaken in the form of a questionnaire which was compiled using items from standardised questionnaires published by previous researchers. Interpretation of the data revealed that the respondents are only moderately positive about the levels of interpersonal trust and organisational innovativeness within the business. In addition to this, although no causal relationship is implied, the research results revealed a practically significant positive correlation between the overall lateral, vertical, cognitive and affective-based trust constructs and the overall organisational innovativeness construct. The recommendation of this study centres on reinforcing all three facets of the trustworthiness construct mentioned in Meyer et al.’s (1995) model by constantly reminding people of the importance of “living” the Sasol Values.
