A Usability Problem Inspection Tool: Development and Formative Evaluation

Usability inspection methods of user interaction designs have gained importance as an alternative to traditional laboratory-based testing methods because of their cost-effectiveness. However, methods like the heuristic evaluation are ad-hoc, lacking a theoretical foundation. Other, more formal approaches like the cognitive walkthrough are tedious to perform and operate at a high-level, making it difficult to sub-classify problems. This research involves the development and formative evaluation of the Usability Problem Inspection tool — a cost-effective, structured, flexible usability inspection tool that uses the User Action Framework as an underlying knowledge base. This tool offers focused inspections guided by a particular task or a combination of tasks. It is also possible to limit the scope of inspection by applying filters or abstracting lower level details. / Master of Science

Usability Problem Diagnosis tool: Development and Evaluation

Usability evaluation results in several usability problems and the non-UE developer is often not a part of the evaluation as it might deter the participant from reporting all the errors and also, conducting usability evaluation is a usability engineer's responsibility. Thus the evaluator needs to create unambiguous usability problem reports, which will help the developer fix the usability problems. This research involves the development and evaluation of the Usability Problem Diagnosis tool, which supports problem diagnosis through analysis and storage in a common database shared between the evaluation and the development team. Design and evaluation of a web-based training tool for the User Action Framework Explorer

This growth has brought with it an awareness among developers of interactive systems about the importance of user centered design and usability. In the Virginia Tech Usability tools lab, efforts are underway to develop tools and processes that assist in usability evaluation. This has led to the development of the User Action Framework (UAF) (Andre et al., 1999), a framework that forms the basis of several usability inspection tools like the Explorer, UPI (Usability Problem Inspector), UPC (Usability Problem Classifier) and the usability problem database. The UAF explorer is the tool in the toolkit, which allows users to explore and learn the structure of the UAF. The framework, in its final stages of development, is based on an interaction cycle derived from Norman's action model (1986). For its acceptance, the user action framework, which is based on human factors and cognitive concepts, needed a training program to make it accessible and understandable to the usability practioners in industry and academia. This thesis addressed the following research activities: (1) Developing a web-based training tool for the User Action Framework explorer and (2) Evaluating a web- based training tool using various formative evaluation techniques and a final summative evaluation to measure effectiveness of the training, transfer of training, knowledge/skill acquisition and reaction to the training. The summative evaluation used a pretest-posttest between subjects experimental design to determine the effectiveness of the training tool with the use of lecture-based training as a control group. The data collection included objective measures of performance and subjective measures through questionnaires and rating scales. The summative evaluation found no significant differences between gain scores on lecture-based training and web-based training under controlled conditions. Opportunities for future research were identified and the training tool is expected to contribute to the efforts of the VT usability tools lab towards educating usability professionals and researchers alike on the usefulness of the User Action Framework and its associated tools. This work also seeks to proliferate the use of web based training methods as a valuable way to train remote learners on such developing frameworks and toolkits. / Master of Science

An unmanned aircraft system for maritime search and rescue

Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Search and Rescue is an essential service provided by States and Militaries to search for, locate and rescue survivors of accidents and incidents. Civil Search and Rescue utilizes a system of well-trained professionals or volunteers, an effective Search and Rescue organization, supported by industry and other providers of infrastructure and assets. The service is rendered to save the lives of civilian individuals in imminent danger of losing their lives. Military (Combat) Search and Rescue is provided by militaries to save the lives of military practitioners in a similar predicament. In addition, Search and Rescue is performed over land and over the sea. All forms of Search and Rescue rely on capable, specialized assets for efficiency en affectivity. Assets are specified and chosen on the grounds of various factors, amongst others operating environment, operational profile, performance and special abilities. This thesis has determined the need for a Search and Rescue asset, capable of performing effective and efficient Search and Rescue over the entire national maritime Search and Rescue Region, up to the Region extremities. An analysis was performed to prove this deficit, and quantify the key performance and special equipment requirements for such an asset. An analysis was also performed which proves that an Unmanned Aircraft System should be an ideal choice to meet this need. Finally, an Unmanned Aircraft System concept was specified that could potentially meet this need. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Soek en Redding is ‘n essentiële diens wat deur State en militêre organisasies gebied word om oorlewendes van ongelukke en insidente te soek, op te spoor en na veiligheid te bring. Anaerobic Treatment Of Dilute Wastewaters

In this study, domestic wastewater was used to determine the anaerobic treatment performances of a dilute wastewater in one-phase upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) system and two-phase upflow anaerobic filter (UAF) and UASB system. The acidification performances of domestic wastewater were compared in UAF and UASB reactors. The degree of acidification is higher in UAF reactor (31%) compared to UASB reactor (18%) at 2 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewaters. The effluent total volatile fatty acid (tVFA) concentration was higher in UAF reactor than that the UASB reactor at 2 h HRT. The total chemical oxygen demand (tCOD) removal is 40% in winter and 53% in summer in UAF reactor at 2 h HRT. The tCOD removals in two-phase UAF and UASB system and one-phase UASB system were 83% and 63%, respectively, in 4 h HRT. The conversion rate of COD removed to methane were between 0.005 and 0.067 Nm3 methane/kg COD removed and between 0.158 and 0.233 Nm3 methane/kg COD removed in the UAF and the UASB reactor of the two-phase system, respectively. The conversion rate of COD removed to methane varied between 0.029 and 0.199 Nm3 methane/kg COD removed in one-phase UASB reactor. The results of this study showed that the two-phase reactor system consisting from UAF and UASB reactors provide a good removal of soluble organics variations in acidification reactor and better methane productions in UASB reactor at temperatures 20&deg / C and 35&deg / C through the treatment of domestic wastewater at a HRT of 4 hours.

Ancient plant cuticle chemistry: preservation and characterization of organic matter as biomarker of past UV-B radiation / Kemin i fossila löv: bevaring och karakterisering av organiskt material som biomarkör för forntida UV-B-strålning

Biologiska processer hos olika organismer påverkas av ultraviolett-B-strålning (UV-B). Kunskapen om förändringar i UV-B-flödet som nått planetens yta under det geologiska tidsspann sedan flercelligt liv uppstod är dock begränsad. Följaktligen har olika biologiska proxies använts som ett sätt att försöka rekonstruera UV-B-flödet som når jordens yta. Växter reagerar på fluktuationen av UV-B genom att variera produktionen av fenolföreningar såsom parakumarsyra (pCA) och ferulinsyra, och därför kan dessa beståndsdelar användas som UV-B-proxys. UV-B-absorberande föreningar (UAC) finns i växternas yttersta skikt, den så kallade kutikulan men även i pollen och sporer, vilka oftaär välbevarade i det geologiska arkivet. Ändå är användningen av kutikula som UV-B-proxy inte lika undersökt. Därför syftar denna magisteruppsats till att analysera kemiska förändringar i fossila växters från trias – jura-gränsen (c. 200 miljoner år gamla)  och deras potential som UV-B-proxys. Eftersom de fossila löven behövde rengöras från sediment och från förkolnat mesofyll, gjordes också en analys av de kemiska förändringarna som orsakades av de olika rengöringsstegen. Icke-destruktiva tekniker, som mikro-FTIR och konfokalt Raman-mikroskop, användes för analysen. Försöken visade att analysen endast kunde utföras med mikro-FTIR på grund av den höga auto-fluorescensen hos de fossila bladen  vilketförhindrade analys med Raman. Signifikanta förändringar orsakades då Schulzes reagens användes för borttagning av mesofyllet, vilket ledde till nitrering av kutikulan. Ett mindre aggressivt och mer hållbart alternativ till denna process har visat sig vara väteperoxid, vilket orsakade mindre förändringar av den fossila kutikulans kemiska sammansättning. Dessutom upptäcktes indikation på förekomst av UAC endast i Ginkgoites regnellii, vilket indikerar att eventuell nedbrytning av dessa föreningar inträffade under diagenesen av de andra analyserade fossilerna. / Biological processes of different organisms are impacted by ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B). However, knowledge about alterations in the UV-B flux reaching the planet’s surface during the geological past is limited. Consequently, different biological proxies have been used as an approach to attempt reconstructing the UV-B flux reaching Earth’s surface. Plants respond to the fluctuation of UV-B by varying the production of phenolic compounds such as p-coumaric acid (pCA) and ferulic acid, and therefore these constituents can be used as UV-B proxies. UV-B-absorbing compounds (UACs) can be found in the cuticle, pollen, and spores, which are all well-preserved in the geological record. Nevertheless, the use of cuticles as UV-B proxy is not as explored. Hence, this Master’s thesis aimed to analyse chemical changes in the plant cuticles from the Triassic–Jurassic boundary and their potential as UV-B proxies. Moreover, as the cuticles needed to be cleaned from rocks and isolated from coalified mesophyll, an analysis of the chemical changes caused by the cleaning steps was also done. Non-destructive techniques, as micro-FTIR and confocal Raman microscope, were used for the analysis.  Yet, the analysis could only be conducted with micro-FTIR due to auto-fluorescence of the leaves preventing success with Raman. Main changes during the cleaning steps were caused using Schulze’s reagent, which led to nitration of the cuticles. A less aggressive and more sustainable alternative to this process is shown to be hydrogen peroxide, which caused minor alteration of the fossil cuticle’s chemical composition.  Moreover, indication of the presence of UACs was detected only in Ginkgoites regnellii, indicating that possible degradation of these compounds occurred during diagenesis of the other fossils analysed.
