Economic Sanctions and International Conflicts: The Case of Russia In Comparative PerspectiveChernousov, Pavel January 2016 (has links)
The subject of my thesis is the following: “Economic sanctions and international conflicts: the case of Russia in comparative perspective.” I will demonstrate the impact the economic sanctions have had on a state’s foreign policy; whether they have succeeded in persuading or forcing an embargoed country to change its geopolitical actions. I believe there is a case that argues that economic sanctions can work provided that they are applied in a right manner against properly defined targets with a clear purpose.
My thesis will pursue a practical aim of providing direct and proven data based on empirical analysis to reinforce the theoretical base of the tool of economic sanctions. Apart from the research conducted on past case studies, the empirical research will concentrate on the Russian case. It will make use of think-tank reports, official documents and journalists’ investigations, in which the case for sanctions with regard to Russia is well-documented.
In order to understand the development of the tool of economic sanctions, this paper will also outline their main characteristics. A historical and comparative approach is best suited for this purpose, as it offers solid theoretical data to reinforce the main arguments of the study. This information provides a useful tool for building this research project in a conclusive and definitive way.

Ruská Hybridní Válka na Ukrajině: Komparativní Analýza Dvou Případů a Identifikace Kritických Prvků v Úspěšné Aplikaci Hybridní Taktiky / Russian Hybrid Warfare in Ukraine: Comparative Analysis of Two Cases and Identification of Critical Elements in the Successful Application of Hybrid TacticsStarodubtseva, Albina January 2021 (has links)
After the military intervention in Ukraine in 2014, and the swift, bloodless annexation of Crimea, the international community recognized Russia as an expert on hybrid warfare. However, the ongoing conflict in Donbas unleashed by Moscow during the second less successful hybrid campaign remains a sore point not only for Ukraine but also for Russia which has to cope with costly consequences in order not to lose in the East of Ukraine and more importantly in its undeclared war on the West. This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two Russian hybrid warfare models: (1) in Crimea; (2) in Eastern Ukraine, and focuses on the following research questions: Why was the Russian hybrid warfare in Crimea more successful than in Donbas? What measures can the state take to improve its ability to face hybrid attacks? The findings reveal that despite the presence of a set of common factors, the different degrees of success and outcomes of both cases are attributable to the fact that successfully employing the full spectrum of hybrid warfare, is actually bound not only to a number of prerequisites but also with specific favorable features of the conflict zone and several critical elements. While hybrid tactics vary depending on country and region, it is built on exploiting the enemy's vulnerabilities, the...

External independent knowledge testing in Ukraine from a historical and social perspectivePottroff, Viktoriya January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Kay A. Taylor / This historical and qualitative inquiry investigates recent educational reform in Ukraine. On Tuesday, April 22, 2008 more than half a million Ukrainian high-school graduates were ordered to take an external assessment of student achievements. The new assessment model was named the External Independent Knowledge Testing and replaced the traditional forms of high school exit-entrance to higher educational institution exams in Ukraine. These changes in assessment strategies in the Ukrainian educational system illustrate the global trend of replacing diverse forms of national examinations with standardize multiple-choice assessments that can be scored by machines and could be viewed as a new page in the history of educational assessment. Educational assessment has become one of the most significant areas of research in the United States. It is not only a prominent issue in education today but also one of the most controversial issues in contemporary educational science. The debate is concentrated around the question of what purpose educational assessment serves. A growing body of international research suggests that educational assessment is a new mechanism of social and political control aimed to legitimize social inequalities. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to investigate what kind of changes the External Independent Knowledge Testing in Ukraine was expected to bring to Ukrainian society and whether the initial results of the reform were consistent with what was expected. Data was collected by means of interview, survey, and examining Ukrainian publications. The data revealed that the recent changes in traditional practices of assessment in Ukraine were aimed at serving much broader social purposes than those identified by Ukrainian policymakers. Under the guise of improving the quality of Ukrainian education and fighting corruption in higher education, the educational reforms in Ukraine are implementing an undetected new form of social and political preferences through education and testing. Thus, the reform helps new Ukrainian nobilities legitimize their status through the new system of exercising control over Ukrainian education.
